Can MBL or longer haired ladies get weaves?

I was told by a stylist that I wouldn't be able to get a weave because I have too much hair. The rows would be too close together preventing the water from reaching my scalp, preventing the hair to dry properly and the weave would have sections puffier than others.

What say you ladies? I would love to get a weave cut into a bob...not now but at some point in time.
 
I think u should get a second opinion. You should be able to get a weave. Just do the cornrows with your own hair and in small sections. If you want a short bob though, the weave would have to cover your entire head, so none of your own hair would be out.
 
A year ago March I think, I learned that because of the thickness of my hair I can no longer were wigs or weaves. I am NOT complaining, but I loved my girlfriends! :)

I don't know what other thick hair ladies have been able to do, but I found the pulling, tugging, wig caps and other items just could not do the look justice when wearing them. Doing weaves or treebraids which I am very intersted in would require some serious work with keeping the cornrows small enough they don't seem bulky.

The other week I tried to use a 3/4 wig and I found that to be uncomfortable. YIKES. I took it off after a few hours because of that.

Yeah, I was looking at my hair closet (yes I said that right) and there are two shelves that I am in need of cleaning because I cannot wear the girlfriend and I need to let them go.

Maybe others have had success, but it is just too uncomfortable with the thickness that I have to wear them. Again NOT complaining. It is what it is.
 
It depends.

The person installing needs to be able to braid thin and flat WITHOUT additional hair. I've been told before that I could not get weaves because my hair is so thick. But not the case. The person I go to has MANY clients that are mid back length that wear weaves.

It's all about the braiding underneath.

I don't think she was saying she "needs" one at all...more like she wants to be able to rock a bob without cutting her hair. :yep: There are plenty of women on LHCF who don't "need" weaves or wigs and wear them anyway for a style change.
 
i'm forgetting her name right now, but she's posted in the waistlength and beyond post....anyway she's got MBL hair and she uses weaves from time to time to rest her hair. so i think the answer is yes. i used them when i was BSL (oh, wait...i still am BSL) but i'd ask that girl, i think her name starts with an L ....i'll look her up and if i find her name i'll edit this post. :)
 
not true. my best friend gets weaves all the time and she is WL natural. You just need to find someone who has a good braiding pattern. It helps that she is natural and has shrinkage though....

I can ask her who does her hair if you want. she's in nyc
 
I'm sure you can, there are many salons in NYC, especially Brooklyn, that do installs on hair longer than bsl... I'm actually self installing this wknd to give my hair a break... for the flattest look I'm going to braid my hair going straight back kinda like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc5vUiagojc
 
:ohwell: I don't know... maybe if you go to these professionals who know how to do weaves on longer hair... but personally I self-installed a couple times following directions from another hair board and from youtube vids... and there was basically no way for my hair to dry. No matter how tiny I make the parts, the braids get thick, the ends are long and need lots of work to fit... so my scalp got no air.

I ended up getting an eyeball full of white vinegar :cry3:when I tried to de-funk my funky weave! Never again. Wigs are a better choice because you can remove them easily to let your hair dry all the way. :imo:
 
imo that would be too much hair to braid up, I would do clip but your hair is already thick and long, once I reach mbl or longer I wouldn't even want to have a weave unless it's for fullness.

How long are your wigs? I really want to get a short one but I need to know all my hair will fit. mscocoface has be worried.
 
I wore a wig for my MA graduation.... Hair braided underneath.... It does depend on the Braid pattern. I plan to stay braided for a year.....

I'm surprised a professional stylist would be so clueless. You can get a weave at any length. It's not about needing a weave it's about creativity and the ability to try different looks. Or is s/he (stylist) afraid if you start weaving then you won't come back?
 
I don't think the stylist was simply referring to the OP's length, but density as well. I am sure a really skilled stylist might be able to do it. But then I would be concerned with how much force/manipulation she had to use to make it happen.

Yes you can but you have to get really creative with the braiding pattern. I have a new strategy for my next set of crochet braids.

I started a thread on the fotki of a girl that went natural via weaves then PSed till WL with weaves. She's a type 4 natural btw. Her hair looks AMAZING and it turned into a huge thread:

I want to do a weave install on myself pretty soon
