it seems like i cant moisturize my hair..or i can never get satisfied when moisturizing it..whatever i put on pretty much just sits there. is there anything i can do to make my hair more porous

What is your regime like?

When was the last time you used protein and how often do you use it?

Have you tried the baggie method?

My hair is quite similar. Especially during the colder months (in Chicago that's about 2/3 of the year) my hair does not want to accept anything. So, um, yeah, what do I know? :lachen: But I hear tell that heat opens your cuticles and cold water closes them. Soo, maybe a moisturizing treatment with heat might help? Or a deep condition with heat and then rinse out with cold water? I never got that to do anything in cold weather, but maybe you'll have better luck now.

Nappfrizz, what products are you using? I know everyone swears by shea butter but all that did was sit on my hair. It felt good when I applied it but it dried hard and left my hair with a very weird "hue" and hardly any definition. Then I tried creams and while they were better, they still made my hair hard after making it curl so tight that it could pass for a doormat. Gels? Well, people swear that gels (eg S-Curl gel) helps reduce shrinkage by weighing the coils down a bit so that wash and go's are bouncy. Uhmm...didn't happen to me. I just got sticky icky hair that curled as tightly as possible. Other gels (eg aloe) just left me with stiff dry hair.

So you see, I would've concluded nothing works on my hair, except S-Curl (the spray) did and does. I do agree that clarifying will help. I know when I used to use CON and my hair was coated with *shudder* whatnot from that shampoo, it was hard and just didn't feel right except during the wash. I stopped using CON and made my regimen so simple that I hardly have any build-up and now I have hair that seems to stay moisturized after a CW or DC even w/o me needing to add any other product as a leave-in. :yep:

So if you clarify and DC with a moisturizing condition and heat and baggy and your hair still doesn't feel right, perhaps you need to change the product you're using as a moisturizer. Coz as you can see from my own experience, what works for some, didn't work for me.

You can try clarifying or chelating to make sure you've gotten rid of all product buildup and that's not the problem.

If that doesn't seem to help, try an ACV as the final step in your wash. The general mixture is 2 tbsp to 2 cups of water. If that doesn't help try either Porosity Control or a light to medium protein treatment.

I've had the most success with protein.

Co-sign.

I found that my hair only really responds to glycerin as far as really softening and moisturizing my hair to my liking....

But also, when i now have and use the right shampoo, conditoner, and oil my hair responds better/good to products that in the past did nothing but "sit" on my hair.

well my hair is in a full sew in so i wash it like every 2 weeks then run elasta qp recovery oil moisturizer over my braids and scalp.

whats considered light protein?

ApHogee 2 Minute reconstructor, Aubrey Organic GPB(GBP, can't remember which one)/ Do a search on the board, there are tons of threads on proteins

I agree with clarifying. You can even try a natural clarification process Baking Soda (but please do research before using, especially if you are a natural). Sometimes your hair is just coated with "stuff" so it makes absorption impossible.

Your hair could possibly be really damaged. I know that when I first came here (it's only been a year and three months) I lot of my hair was really damaged to the point where no matter what I did it still felt rough and dry after all my DCing. I just got rid of the last of my really damaged ends this past April and now for the first time in a long time my hair feels way more open to moisture.

I also started using this glycerin aloe vera water blend. It's the only thing that makes my hair really, really soft. I like it a lot and I try to use it when I cowash/bun, my hair has slip and feels really soft even when I'm wetting it in the shower with nothing on it!

If I let up on it for a while (like I've done the past week by accident) then my hair is more dry.

HTH!
