Can I gain length by roller setting every week?

I am new on here. I have what most people would call "mixed" hair. Even though I am Black, I have a cross between white and black hair. It is fine, but curly. For the last 6 months I washed my hair, conditioned and wore it in a bun every day. For the first time in my LIFE I retained 2-3 inches of growth!! Everyone was amazed about the length once I put a relaxer in it and had it blow dryed out. Since reading this forum I have decided to leave direct heat alone, and maybe during the week wash, cond and bun because I sweat alot when I work out, and on Fridays go and have it roller set.
Has anyone on here had success retaining ends roller setting every week? And is the heat from the hooded dryer damaging to the hair?? I do put a leave in cond called Formydale in before I let the lady roll it. ( I am sure that is not the correct spelling) lol

If you have a solid regimen yea, I think you could gain length by rollersetting weekly. It's a very good option because you don't have to use direct heat. The heat from dryers is in-direct and in my opinion not bad for your hair as long as you don't overdo it. I've gained a lot of length by rollersets and braid-outs. Mostly because of the low manipulation and no direct heat. Normally I do rollersets every 2 weeks and braid-outs every week.

Welcome to the board!!

Run quicky-this is an explosive enviroment w/comments like this :look:

But to answer your questions yes-I do retain length very well when I rollerset (but I'm currently natural). I don't find that hooded dryers are damaging, but that's probably due to the fact that I do it on low heat or cool settings. Hope this helps

I have straight up what I call NAPS (4a/b) relaxed hair. I roller set every week. My sets look great and my hair grows. I don't do a lot of the bandwagons that you'll read about on the board, but i think the basics -- moisture, protein and moisture combined with little/no heat regimens will work over the long haul.

There is a rollersetting challenge currently going on here, which just recently started for the year 2008, with plenty of ladies on it, supporting each other. There are tons of threads on the benefitting of rollersetting.

It helps stretch relaxers, because it straightens the roots and new growth. The heat from the hooded dryer is circulating heat, which is not damaging, as opposed to the direct heat from blowdryers. And rollersetting is considered a protective style because it can last for a week, and requires little to no manipulation while wearing it.

I'm planning on roller setting late this month and may continue to do so 1-2 times per month until warmer weather.

You can definitely obtain length by rollersetting if you stick with a solid regimen doing your weekly deep cond. I have been consistently rollersetting for the past year (Wed and Sat) and have gone from neck length to right at APL. Old school rollersetting works!

The answer is yes. I grew my hair from Halle Berry cut to waistlenght in about 2.5 years doing weekly rollerset (and that's with trims every 8 weeks.) So yes it's possible.
If you're planning on minimizing heat, you can partially air dry your rollersets and use a low setting on the hooded dryer.

Roller setting is one of the least damaging ways to style hair and will get type 3 hair quite smooth and sleek. If you want it dead straight afterwards, you can hot comb or flat iron your roots and wrap your hair.

Good luck!

Re: Sweetcashew....

Sweetcashew, your hair is BEAUTIFUL!! Did you relax your hair while you were growing it out?

Thanks... Yes I'm ashamed to admit I relaxed every 4 weeks for the first year then it was every 5 to 6 weeks after that. It was just a bad habit developed while wearing my hair short. It would grow out so fast I was getting trims every 2 weeks to maintain the style. By 4 weeks I'd have a full head of natural hair. I wish I decided then not to perm again.
:ohwell:

Co-signing here. :yep: I grew out my hair on this board rollersetting every week. I prefer airdrying my rollersets overnight.

I wonder if rollersetting every week would be too much heat/manipulation for a natural.
Any naturals gain length this way?
Without compromising your curl pattern?

It's not as long as you keep the manipulation low the rest of the week....finger comb, keep the hair clipped up or bunned when at home. Thats what I do and my hair does very well. Most of the time I'll try to wait until 2 weeks though....that's even better if your doing low mani.

As far as heat, it's indirect so not bad. You can always use cool air on your hood dryer if you have it. IMO it isn't enough direct heat to damage your curl pattern at all.

ETA.....lol, I just realized i already answered in this thread and said pretty much the exact same thing.

Not intending to hijak OP but Isis - how do you comfortably airdry overnight? What type of rollers do you use? What roller setting product is applied to ensure hair is not still damp by morning?

kweenameena - I use to think this at first and I'm relaxed. For the most part, it was a lot of manipulation for me but I think some of the minipulation can be minimized with investing in some better combs. I just recently upgraded to bone combs and I am detangling my 11 week post hair with no issues. My previous combs would not allow such without a bunch of manipulation.

divachyk Isis is no longer a member here. I can't remember which rollers she used for sure. Mesh would probably have the quickest drying time and you'd probably have to use a lot of them so there isn't much hair on each roller.

Rollersets are great. They helped my hair retain moisture which, in turn, helped it retain length. I plan to get back on this regi once I get my life together again! lol
