Can dull scissors give ragged ends?

I am pretty sure it did for me. I had to just break down and invest in some really nice scissors for my hair. Made a world of difference!

YES!!! PLEEEEAAAASE DO NOT use dull scissors to cut hair! You should only use scissors made for haircutting, the sharper the better! They can get pretty pricey, but you can find a decent pair under $50. Think about cutting a piece of thread with dull scissors. It chews, tears, shreads and rips the strands just like it does thread.

You should also have scissors sharpened periodically....hairdressers are supposed to do this, but I have a feeling they do not.

It makes a huge difference. I have a pair of japanese scissors that are razor sharp (unfortunately I spent all the money on them, but can't trim my own hair to save my life!!!). The sharper the better. You want the blades to slice through the hair effortlessly.

Your analogy to thread and dull scissors is a good point. Maybe that's why I had to trim/dust twice in two months? I was bunning but my ends were awful:(

Dont get them too sharp. My god sister is in cosmetology school and her TEACHER severed 2 ligaments in her hand. Those scissors glied thru hair like a hot knife in butter. BE CAREFUL!

Ewwww.....

Ok....yeah, maybe don't get the SHARPEST pair out there, lol.

I was gonna post it the same way you did.... lol. I feel like this is the ONLY reason (okay besides moisturizing my ends better) I have been able to go so long without a trim (5 months and counting) so far. I have only allowed a higher-end stylist to do my trims. I ONLY go to her for trims and I know that she only uses the highest quality tools. I used to go to dominicans for my trims and :nono:. I know they don't use GREAT stuff to cut with.

Mind you, I'm all for getting trims when you need them and I have been watching my ends like a hawk. I just got a blow-out on friday and I SWEAR it looks like I still have a fresh cut. I AM NOT KIDDING. I am soo loving this :yep: and I know it's due to the sharpness and quality of the scissors.

Just like so1913 said, bad scissors will do more harm than good in the end by tearing your hair. And if ever I can't go to my regular stylist for my trims, you best believe I'm gonna bring my own pair. :yep:

Invest in good quality scissors..... they will be a GREAT investment and well worth the extra money.

Nw that I think about it, dont EVER use regular scissors on your hair. Justa as you wouldnt wash your hair with laundry detergent. Yes its soap but it doesnt do the same thing. Hair shears are made for hair. They can cost up in the hundreds but you can get a good pair for $15. I bought mines fro $8 on sale :D And you can see how blunt they cut. Also start small. Trim the ends first by the half inch to et used to the shears and watch your fingers, I cant say that enough.

Thanks for the advice, ladies! I will definately be investing in a new pair. But how do I sharpen them? Or how often do you buy a new pair? Any recommendations on a good place to buy them?

You can get a good pair from any beauty supply...Sally's has a selection, or you can order online.Y ou usually don't sharpen them yourself, you can take them somewhere or send them in via mail and have them sharpened for you. You probably wouldn't have to sharpen them for a while since you will be using them occassionally on yourself, unlike hairdressers who use them 10 times a day. You can usually tell when they start getting dull by the way they cut, it won't be as clean or smooth as it is with sharper scissors. You'll be able to "feel" it.

I was EXTRA with my purchase...I got a $300 pair for about $150 off of Ebay, they have a swivel thumb which is pretty cool because it allows you to position your hand in the most comfortable way to cut your own hair. Unfortunately, I used them once, and they were GREAT, just sliced through my hair effortlessly and so smoothly, but I'm not a good self cutter so they are just sitting in it's case :-( You can DEFINITELY get a decent pair for under $50, even $20....like I said, I was being extra like I was some cutting specialist extradonaire, LOL!

I know for a fact to dull shears can and will jack up your ends. I trimmed off 3 inches of hair in Nov. with some cheapo shears I got at Sally's for $7, well I guess you get what you pay for because my ends look jacked up and raggedy, I'm gonna have to trim yet again because I was trying to cut corners.

whoa girl, thats a lot of cash! . But if they last a long time it is worth it.

Mine were about $20. I got them from Beauty First. I have had this pair for about 5 months. If they start acting up I will just toss them or start using them to clip coupons with. :)

Yeah, I was nuts, LOL. But they are a good pair...

But like you said, you can def get a more inexpensive pair, and pick up a new pair to replace when the start getting dull.

Ok...so I have a REALLY great pair of shears, and keep them in the bath w/ my other hair utensils...then my husband decided to use them to cut the sleeves off of a t-shirt... :wallbash: :wallbash: :orders: :swearing: :angry2: :spank: :fishslap: :arguing: He couldn't understand why I was so mad.....

ok well i guess i needs to go get me a pair of hair shears. I have to admit, I have been using my old scissors that I use for erthang else. STUPID ME!!!!

I got lucky once and caught a pair of $50 shears on sale for about $20. It was the last one in stock...I only use them to trim/cut my hair and nothing else.

Well where's mine?! lol I don't plan on trimming until April or later so I'll just keep my eye out for now.

YES it does. i read that somewhere and ever since i bought a pair of hair scisssors just for trims. even though i havent trimmed my hair in a while but whenever i needed to cut or anything i told my friends or the person to only use that pair of scissors. It is hidden in a safe place and nobody can touch it not even hubby. we have at least 6 scissors in the house but the sacred ones no one can touch them:grin:  i will trim again around waistlength who knows maybe a year or a year and half from now:p

So what's a good brand or price range for scissors? There's alot of room between $20 and $300. Would $40 scissors be useless or work just as well as $100 pair? Or should you spend no less that $50 to get something decent? Is a $100 or $200 pair really necessary or just better for stylists who get alot of use from them?

It is not necessary to buy a $100 to $200 pair of scissors for trimming. A $40 pair would do just fine :)
