I don't know if a thread on this has been done on this topic; I did a search and couldn't find anything. But I wash my hair around 3-4 times a week because I work out a lot and I wanted to know how you naturals keep a certain style without manipulation. For instance if I do twists and wash them the next day they look all ragedy and they need to be taken down and I have thick hair so this is a task doing my hair in twists every couple of days.

So how are you ladies able to wash your hair several times a week (or even once a week) and keep a protective style without messing in your hair each day! I'd love to know.

P.S. I'm getting sick of braids so I am about to take them down the end of this month

I am not a natural, and when I was natural I never wore twists. I do however wear braids. When I wash my braids to keep them from getting fuzzy I wash them in a big braid without manipulating it much. Then I moisturize my hair and tye it down with a satin scarf. This helps to keep the braids from getting fuzzy. I am not sure if this will work on your twists, but it is a suggestion.

Good luck!:)

I'm natural and wear twists 95% of the time. I've started braiding the roots of my twists. I co-rinse once or twice a week, and it seems that this has helped. Before, I couldn't wash or rinse without some coming out or a ton of frizz.
I just wet my hair under the shower head, smooth on the conditioner, let it marinate for a few and then gently rinse out while squeezing water through the twists. Gently squeeze out excess water, and smooth on some hair butter while my hair is still damp and tie down with a satin scarf. I get almost no frizz this way, and none of the twists come out. If I use shampoo, I dilute it in a bottle with water and squeeze the suds through and follow up with the conditioner procedure.

I'm natural and I wear twists A LOT. Frizz is a fact of life for me. I know if I wash my twists they will get frizzy. They don't unravel or anything like that, they just sprout a halo of fuzz. I simply embrace is and consider it an evolution of the original style.

Um, if I were to wash my hair while in twists my hair would lock up!! I've learned the hard way that I can't wash my hair while in twist. I wear twist & twist outs 100% of the time.

You could get some astringent and a cotton ball and clean your scalp that way until you get a chance to wash.

When I wore twists, that's the only way I washed my hair. In twists, and rather than knot up, my hair became so easy to handle. In fact, since I wasn't combing, my hair, it was after a wash that I could easily undo, detangle and then retwist my hair. Mind you, I wasn't using any leave in. My moisturizer was from conditioning during the wash so maybe that helped prevent matting?

I would apply shampoo to the scalp and massage my scalp and then squeeze the twists after running some water through my hair so shampoo was running through them. I'd rinse with squeezes again and then finish my wash with a head dunk in an ACV solution. I'd then drip dry. My twists didn't get messy. Some would become undone but I'd retwist and then dunk in ACV again. I loved my twists after they had been washed because they'd hang down straight.

This is a pic of my twists drip drying after a wash:

And here's a close up from a couple years or so before also after a wash. My twists loved being washed:

When my twists got messy, I'd wear them in an updo or pigtails as I slowly touched up the uppermost ones. Or I'd wear a twist-out till just before a wash, when I'd twist them up neatly just before washing.

I keep my hair in cornrows 99.9% of the time and co-wash every day or every other day. I have started putting a stocking cap on my head during my wash and this keeps my hair much neater. Some women also use the stocking cap method for washing their twists.

I only cowash once a week but I rinse my hair daily and I mostly wear twists. They will eventually get frizzy as the days go by but nothing too bad. When I rinse, I lightly rub my scalp to avoid manipulating my hair much or sometimes I don't rub at all.

What about when you guys do styles on streched hair and then wash it; how does it turn out?

Is there any naturals that wash several times a week and see benefits in their hair and are still able to manage a good style. I tried the wash and go but it gets to tangled.
