What products are good curl definers? I'm looking for a product (or series of products

) that will help bring out the curls in my hair...and my daughter's and keep them moisturized. Right now, she's sporting a curly fro and although it's cute, it looks dry and I don't want it to be damaged.

Thanks for bearing with me and all my questions. I've just started transitioning and I'm already getting nervous. I've been relaxed for as long as I can remember so I don't know how to care for anything but relaxed hair.

I also think that I may be expecting something unrealistic from my hair and I'll be disappointed and go back to relaxing after all that hard work growing out the relaxer.

Is that sad or what?

I heard that BBD Glass was good..

Not all type 3's have defined curls, some of us just have waves (a good example is the current feature of the month)

Well, welcome to the world of curls. I am in the same boat. I cut off my permed hair not too long ago and while I love my curls, combating dryness and the frizz factor are the 2 big issues for me at the moment. Many products I used prior to cutting my hair, doesn’t work anymore. But here are a few tips, I have picked up so far:

My hair is extremely thick and strong and it sucks up moisture. When it comes to conditioners, I have to use something heavy now. Pantene Hydrating Curls is a good heavy conditioner. I also condition wash my hair every day. I was doing it before to make my hair grow, but now I find it to be a necessity to hydrate and to get the definition back into my curls. If I don’t then it looks like a poodle is sitting on top of my head. However, I think spritzing your hair daily with distilled water will also achieve the same effect if u don’t want to wash your hair that much.

Vegetable glycerine and distilled water also works well for quenching curls and definition. I also hear that Epsom salt added to this will make the curl retain longer. U have to find what proportions works best for u. U can also try mixing a dab of glycerine with your conditioner.

Coconut oil provides a good shine to your hair

Hair gel is a staple for me in hot, humid hot weather. I am using a no name brand which doesn’t give my hair the crunchies and it makes my hair shiny and controls the frizz. Aloe Vera gel (which I have to yet buy) is good as it contains no alcohol. U can use it alone or mix it with your leave-in conditioner.

Oh and of course, a good leave-in also retains moisture and can also help with the frizz and definition.

I’ve never tried Aveda Humectant Pomade, but it’s a popular curling product. It’s a pomade which retains moisture, defines and enhances curls and smooths down the frizz. It is really expensive though!!! But I hear a little goes a long way.

Also, make sure u clarify once in a while because with the way I use products, I get build-up real fast!!

When your curls are starting to look limp and lifeless, mist it with distilled water. U can add conditioner, essentials oils to it, whatever. I mist frequently throughout the day. Water is a curl’s best friend.

If I find something else, I’ll pass it on to u. I’m still trying to figure it out myself.

Re: Pantene & L\'oreals Curl Care Line

CKiss, you just wrote my life story!!! Even though my hair has been relaxed all my life, when I let it air dry, it still curls, just not as tight. But my little girl is all natural. When I washed her hair last night, 5 minutes after it dried completely, it looked like a big pouf! So I put some hot 6 oil on it. When she woke up this morning, she was sporting that "poodle" look that you described.

And it is a challenge to keep her hair moisturized. Her hair stays driest in the back so it's shorter than the rest of her hair. It has a cottony texture so a really good moisturizer is a must!

I said all that to say thanks for the tips. I'll try them and see if that helps. Btw, where do you find pure coconut oil? I've been looking for it forever and haven't been able to find any.

Thanks!

Ur quite welcome Hawaiianhoney!! U can get organic coconut from a health food store or online at www.omeganutrition.com Vevster recommended the website and their coconut oil is excellent!!

I also have to admit that after I cut off my permed hair, I missed the soft, silky feel of my hair and getting used to the cottony texture was quite a change for me and still is. But I know with time and trial and error, I will learn to maintain my new hair, and will get it soft. It will never be the silkiness of straight hair, but then that's what makes curly hair different from straight too and I can also say with certainty that I do not miss the upkeep of the perms and the intense heat of the curling iron!!!

Also, if u get a good tip, lemme know!!!
