bunning help especially 4b's

hey i still pretty new here and getting the hang of things
ive managed to tie down a regime for the time being.

i got inspired by this thread to bun my hair for a year.

thing is im slightly confused so im hoping you can answer some questions for me

do u take your buns down every night to wrap your hair?

do u brush/comb through your hair everyday to put the bun up?

some of you say after doing it for a while you can see how much your hair is grown but surely you would notice when you wash it or put it up? i dont know im totally clueless right now.

i try and use these professional donuts that performing artists use to do my bun but im only NL so having enough hair around it can be tricky what other 'bun' type styles can i do ?

any help or advice would be greatly appriciated!

i really want apl by this time next year

When I bun, I take down nightly to moisturize and seal. Now that I am doing megatek, I do that at night as well. Then I use a brush (I have an older brush from Avon that is FANTASTIC) to distribute my product and stimulate my scalp a little, then I loosely put on my elastic and tie down my edges for the night. In the morning, I use a little oil for sheen and I put on a phony pony or bun and go! It's really easy.
I only usually comb once every other day to get the shed hairs out. Otherwise, if I try to detangle only on wash day, that's too many shed hairs for me to try to get out at one time.

About seeing growth, ladies are talking about seeing new growth coming in (if they are relaxed.) I had a fresh relaxer 2 weeks ago and I can already see the little crinkly hair at the root, that's what they are talking about when they mean "see" it growing.
HTH.

When I wear a bun, it is usually up until I wash. I may spray leave in on it, or take it down once during the week to brush it back into the pony tail.

But usually, it stays up.

Hey,

I'm a natural 4b who used to wet set her bun and left it like so for a week at a time while tying it down at night. My scalp was always sore though after a few days. I have too much hair to release the bun and moisturize and then re-bun. It would never be as neat as when it was first wet set. My only choice is to leave it ALONE.

Now I braid my hair in several braids or twists, let that airdry and then do a bun. This I can 'let down' to moisturize and place the hair back into a neat bun. But sometimes I do miss the wet set bun look. If anything I'll do it rarely...

oh ok thanks very helpful i did a co wash and put my hair staright in a bun wet and went to work first time and im quite impressed i thought my hair would frizz out but it has not. isint sleeping with a bun uncomfortable ?

im thinking of doing kinky twists with the 4b type synthetic hair as a protective style for a while

what do u think?

I've never put in kinky twists so I really don't know how to care for them from experience. Tons of women here have used them though so you should be able to find some info on them. I'm assuming the the Crown N Glory method would apply...
It's def. a protective style...

I use the sock bun method idea that I got from one of the ladies here. You can make the bun the exact size that you want so its easier when your hair is shorter. It works out perfect for me so maybe u can try that since the bss buns are usually much bigger.

Anyone know of a good place to buy a relaxed-4b-looking phony pony online? Whenever I go to the bss they always look so silky straight which would NOT match my hair. I'm thinking my hair will be better off if I can baggy the ends during the day. Thanks!

do u take your buns down every night to wrap your hair? I don't wrap my hair at all except the first few days after the salon. I usually do my bun twice a day now b/c I think I need to moisturize more. So, once in the morning and then once at night (I put it very loose near the very top of my head for bed)

do u brush/comb through your hair everyday to put the bun up? No. I only comb my hair on detangling days and brush the front of my hair when I rock my 1/2 wigs.

some of you say after doing it for a while you can see how much your hair is grown but surely you would notice when you wash it or put it up? Ummm. . .I don't know if I get the question :lachen:. . .but I notice how much I've retained the next relaxer.

i try and use these professional donuts that performing artists use to do my bun but im only NL so having enough hair around it can be tricky what other 'bun' type styles can i do ? You can always get weave (like braid hair) and put it around the bun, blending your hair with it when you put it on.

I just suggest experimenting with the length of time with your bun. Every person's hair is different. At first I would keep it up for a week at a time and not take it down except on wash days. It made detangling very hard sometimes. I then learned taking it down at least every couple days or so is best for me. A week may work for you or it may not. You can also wear wigs (1/2 or full) over your bun for versatility. Oh and I'm not 4b, but I think in general these are the things to keep in mind along with your moisturizing schedule. Good luck!

Well what I do is...

After my rollerset, I gather my hair into a ponytail (without the band), add my moisturizer and seal with oil. Gather it around and twist into a little bun and secure with a pin then put my satin scarf on (doo-rag).

In the morning, position it where I want my bun to be. Put the band on it, add extra hair (weave) and wrap around my pony and pin (see my siggy) and go.

At night, after taking the weave off, I re-moisturize, concentrating on my nape and ends all the while keeping my hair in the same position from where the bun is, secure with a pin and put my satin scarf (doo-rag) on to sleep in.

I do this ALL WEEK until I wash on the weekends. I do not comb, brush or finger comb my hair at all until wash day.

Try www.hairsisters.com
They have reviews on their products, so you should be able to get a feel for the right pony. HTH!

4b here *raises hand* :yep:

I too had neck length hair like yours and just phony ponied until it got long enough to fan around a sock bun. I used to leave it in the pony tail for the entire week until wash day, but I would take the bun down to sleep. I moisturized my ends everyday with Profectiv Healthy Ends, but only combed on wash day. At that time I was baggying everyday, deep conditioning every other day (but still only shampooing and combing once a week). Honestly I didnt have to use the phony bun that long because my length retention during that time was CUR-RAY-ZEE and I was able to graduate from phony ponies to my real hair in no time!

It was alot, but it got me from NL to APL in less than a year.

Sure I can tell you more :yep: I wore phony ponies/phony buns and took down the "bun" itself when I was at home, but not the actual pony tail. I left my pony tail in tact with the baggy ontop of it while I was at home.

Underneath the baggy I made sure my hair stayed moisturized with profectiv healthy ends and sealed with Vaseline. <----old school, I know, but its making a huge comeback lately!!! :giggle: Throughout the week, I would take the baggy down every now and then to let my hair air dry to let it "breathe", so to speak.

Hey hun,
I do not take my bun down but I sometimes take the excess hair down to moisturize. I don't do much to my bun during the week after I take my scarf off in the morning, I just make sure it's sleek and that's it.

do u take your buns down every night to wrap your hair?- I take my bun down every night (too uncomfortable for me to sleep), moisturize and slip on my satin bonnet.

do u brush/comb through your hair everyday to put the bun up? I smooth my hair back into a bun with my hands only and tie the sides down with a scarf while I'm in the shower to keep them smooth.

some of you say after doing it for a while you can see how much your hair is grown but surely you would notice when you wash it or put it up? i dont know im totally clueless right now. I wore a bun for almost a year straight which resulted in a great growth spurt (thicker and longer).

i try and use these professional donuts that performing artists use to do my bun but im only NL so having enough hair around it can be tricky what other 'bun' type styles can i do? I've always used a silk or satin scrunchie for my buns and they turn out great.
