Bunners do you shed when you manipulate

your hair to put in the bun?

I ask because while my shedding has slowed waaaaay down I find when I lightly brush my hair into a bun (soft boar brush) I'm finding about 8-10 hairs in the brush.

Now, I'm using the term 'brush' loosely as I have lumps and bumps underneath because I don't want to manipulate too much, so my scalp is not being touched at all.

In the past, when I ran my hands through my hair there was always much hair in my hands. I have a pashmina covering the back of my chair in my office and that thing in 15 minutes would be covered with shedding hairs as well...it was embarrassing to have people see that. :nono:

Long story short - just want to make sure this is pretty much normal.

Animals including humans shed daily. If you don't manipulate your hair, all the shed hair just gets trapped in your hair so whenever you do comb or brush your hair, all that trapped hair will come out. Do not be surprised when you do finally give your hair a good comb-through, you find tons of hair coming out. I don't think there's anyway to stop this happening unless your hair stops growing by some weird magic so that the growth cycle that includes shedding of hair is completely eliminated.

Yes I shed while bunning but just a little bit, I see most of the hair in the shower when I shampoo though.. When bunning I usually don't manipulate the hair unless I am moisturizing the ends.

I strongly agree with you Nonie in regards to this post.

Furthermore, what you also can do is part your hair into 4 section and give it a light comb, nothing hard just a soft slow comb. i noticed when i do that, i get about 3-5 pieces of hair that comes out. Nothing big.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Ladies.

I just want to make sure I'm 'getting' on target with others. I still have a way to go for totally healthy hair, but I'm get'n there :yep:

ps..Most of my questions seems to lean towards the shedding hair thing, because most threads speak against the issue, and even sound as if no one else 'looses' hair. So, when I see hair I'm like freakin out because I think I'm alone because of past mistakes.

Thanks for the clarification because it IS encouraging.

Yea, I only comb on wash day, bun daily and moisturize my ends daily, I usually see shed hairs when I moisturize and rebun.

it seems to me like im shedding more hair too when I bun my hair, but now i realize that its just like Nonie explained, that you shed hair everyday and the hair I get out, might not just be from one day only,:)

I've been wondering why i shed when re-bunning as well when i'm not doing a lot of manipulation and came to the conclusion that i'm just going to shed no matter what. I have noticed that my ends seem to dry out when bunning even though they are tucked in.

what are you ladies using for moisture? i have just been applying a little conditioner to my ends followed by EVOO.

Mrs_Hair4daze, I know people that would seal their ends with Vaseline before bunning. Do a search for "Vaseline" the petroleum jelly or take a look at Adrienne0914's Picture Trail album (I seem to think she uses it in her drawstring pony style).

Do you baggy your ends? That's another trick people use to keep ends moist.

Yvette used to apply conditioner to her hair when it was damp and bun it immediately. If I remember correctly, her ends never fully dried.

I tried to baggy and bun my wet hair for two days, and by day two my hair smelled sour.

My conclusion was my hair dries slower and this method would not be best for my hair.

I do baggy, but I use TG No shedding Serum and seal with Coconut/Shea Oil.

Just read your thread Itcangrow...
I am a constant shedder w/ low manipulation....you mentioned that you have slowed down on the shedding... are you doing anything special?

I think my hair was 1) out of balance (protein/moisture), 2) had bad build up from various products and 3) seasonal shedding

I purchased the Queen Helen Garlic Shampoo and actually purchased garlic oil. I only used for 3 shampoos before I noticed less and less. I put a couple drops of the oil in a bottle that was 1/2 full, only applied the shampoo to my scalp > kind of massage the shampoo as much as possible on scalp (I'm attempting to keep shampoo off my hair to avoid the stripping) > leave for 3-5 minutes then rinse.

I used another forum members tracking method: Collect the hair from drain and comb (dry) and place in an envelope (w/dates) to measure and monitor. That helped me monitor my shampoo and detangling shedding.

Oh, I could also tell is slowed way down because I no longer had a hair rug for a bath mat:lachen:. (keep in mind I'm on lo/no mani so my hair is consistently in a bun.:yep:

I think this with my total regimen to gain healthy hair overall has helped tremendously. I could run my hand through my hair, or smooth over the top and hair would be intertwined in my fingers. That type of shedding was NOT seasonal.

As I stated previously, I add moisture at night and every morning and seal my end at night and hair strands in the morning w/oil. I know my hair was dry and damaged because the only time I oiled my scalp (nothing on the hair) was after my once a week wash.

If you're interested, here is my current regimen and believe everything together is working for me on the journey to healthy hair :

1) Apply Shikakai powder, infused with eo's to my scalp and massage
2) Apply ORS Hair Mayo (or CPR) w/Heat for 30 minutes
3) warm Rinse out
4) Wash hair with cheapie Conditioner
5) warm Rinse out
6) Rinse scalp with Seabreeze > let stand for 3 min > rinse out
7) Apply Joico Kpak Moisturizing DC w/ Heat for 30 minutes
8) warm to cool Rinse out
9) Detangle w/Pantene
10) Apply Leave In
11) Style

Note:
The ORS Hair Mayo DC is a (med) protein and my spray leave is a (light) protein, so you may want to switch up so you're not using both. It's just right now I have no protein or moisture so I'm working it from both ends. I will give this one more month and will reduce the protein.

Also, I'm using the Seabreeze for a month (only) because I had bad product build up = shedding from years of slapping on the conditioners/poos on the scalp and taking two seconds to wash..yikes.

So, I wouldn't incorporate that step unless you notice you have gunk on your scalp as well.

Wow! Very informative and interesting on how you concluded one reason for your shedding. Build-up(on my scalp) has never crossed my mind:drunk:. I've read your reggie over and over there are a lot of steps that I have totally neglected:perplexed. Your hair is gorgeous by the way! Man, I have a lot of work to do:yep:. Thank you so much for your info and regimen.. I really appreciate lhcfer's who take the time to respond, in such detail, to help a newbie out. Thank You Itcangrow you are a !! If I may, one last question? are you using heat weekly?

p.s. I'm following your reggie for the next few months to see if I STOP THIS SHEDDING:wallbash:.

Thank you so much for the compliment-- This was pre LHCF, so I'm really on my way.

The only heat I use, once a month, is under the dryer for roller setting. My new growth is getting a little out of control, so rollersets have lost their luster, for the moment.

FYI...I could not find Quenne Helens Garlic shamp.... search everywhere. So I crushed several cloves of garlic and put it in my shampoo waited a few hours before i washed. Still lots of shedding, but I know it will take a few more treatments. Yikes!!!!I hate shampooing and manipulations because of all the shedding :wallbash:.
