I just make sure my ends are well moisturized and I use coconut oil to keep them from being dried out when I wear my braid out and it also makes my hair shiny
ETA: *Just realized you asked for BSL or longer...sorry. I would delete, but it might help someone. *shurgs*
YES!It most certainly has...an increase in dryness as a result of wearing my hair in braid outs also resulted in more single strand knots (the hair has less slip and is less able to slide past one another) which also means more frequent trimming (I know some ladies don't mind the single strand knots, I do.)
My hair shrinks up the minute any type of moisture hits it (I'm natural) so sustaining the braid out and adding moisture (water based product) is not a good option (because my hair would then shrink up, which would be even worse since when wearing a braid out I usually don't comb my hair which would me shed strands getting trapped in my shrunken hair...detangling nightmare!)
Truthfully, I think it might be easier to add mositure if you are relaxed (because of minimal shrinkage) or if you are a natural that detangles and rebraids each night (although, for some, that's a lot of manipulation though and kind of defeats the purpose of a braid out.)
ETA: To anwser the second part of your question, I have stopped wearing braidouts for more than one or two days at a time (I used to try to get a week out of them). I also wear them less frequently. For awhile, I would just wash, rock a braid out for a week, wash and repeat. Unfortunately, I think I suffered a lot of breakage this year...something I would I partially attribute most of my hair set backs to wearing my hair out way too much).
I would be interested in hearing how other naturals manage. HTH
Thanks ladies for your replies. This is going on my second week of wearing a braidout and taking a rest from bunning (which I've done for the last 3 years). I've been moisturizing and braiding in the evening but I think I will start doing it in the morning as well.
Braidouts can have an negative impact on my ends, which is unfortunate, since I really love them. I've been moisturizing my ends with coconut oil to avoid this problem.
I think most of my troubles happen during the drying process, when my hair is still in braids; the scrunchies tear my ends to bits as they dry. Sometimes I'll wrap my ends in a small piece of silk, then put the scrunchies over the silk, which seems to help. I am MBL with a few strands barely (and I do mean barely) scraping WL.
When I do braidouts which for some reason has been my style of choice lately, the last inch I always make sure there is some oil, conditioner or leave in on the ends and then I twist up the last part of it.
It is much easier to take the braids down when the bottom part is just twisted up and the rest is braided. At least for me it has been. My ends have not suffered with me doing this.
