BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO!

Just be honest. I don' think there really is a nice way to do it, because it's still gonna hurt. I would set aside a time where you two can talk one on one, then let him know your reasons for ending the relationship.

Over dinner (take separate cars, bring any of his stuff that's left at your place with you) is my favorite way. Sometimes, I'll even pay for dinner, too. Simply say that the relationship isn't working out for you the way you need it to be, and even though ya'll have been working on the issues, you just don't have the energy/time/desire to fight through anymore.
Smile sweetly, and dip. ;)

Good luck.

You all waste too much time. Just call him like I did and say, "It's over. I'm tired. It's time to do something new."

Write him a letter.....Have him to come over and give it to him.

Or rather, just mail it off. If the person is a little 'violent' but you still want to break it off face to face, make sure that it's in a public place. Personally, I don't think that breakups should happen at either home, (the seperate car thing is crucial). They should be short, sweet and sincere.
