well i attribute my breakage to not being able to maintain a proper moisture/protein balance. before i believe my hair was breaking because it didnt have enough protein but now I think it might be breaking because it needs moisture. i washed it myself two days ago and it came out really dry.

Ditto to what LocksofLuv and Kinikakes said; I will add that I have alot less breakage since my henna experience; I can literally comb through dry, 8 weeks post relaxer, 4a hair and only see a few hairs in the comb. YAY!

I voted 2-3 months since that's about how long I have been here  !

I would say my hair is in a pretty healthy state..... and I still get breakage. Such is the nature of very fine, thin hair. No matter what i do, its weak and more susceptible to breakage than if i had thicker hair. No, Im not getting a GREAT amount of breakge, like back in the day when i used to comb my hair and find all those little pieces on the back of my shirt. But i do get some short, broken pieces when i comb it, albeit gently.

To minimize my breakage: I simply dont comb when i dont need to. I try to comb only on wash day, when its wet. I wear my hair mainly in buns during the week, and wear it out on weekends. If i comb at all, its once in the morning and thats IT.

I avoid most breakage this way! :)

I'm still breaking but I try not to get upset about it because as someone said earlier it does not look like it's breaking and my sig pics show it
I also do what kini does comb only on wash day

Same here. I think that no matter how healthy the hair is, there will always be some form of breakage, especially with those with fine and/or thin hair. The best thing to do is moisturize and keep doing protein treatments every once in a while. I also think that relaxers make breakage inevitable, but it can be treated. I've seen every woman with broken off hair, no matter how healthy, so I'm wondering if some breakage is normal and just a part of life.

ITA. There will never be no breakage, but I know before, when I would put my hands in my hair I would end up with a shoulder full of broken strands adn dandruff. Now nothing even after a full day at work, and trust i put my hand in it more now. Another major indicator is the amount of split ends you have. I used to have split ends that would get frizzy and nasty. While of course i still get splits, they're not as severe and the small amount I now get does not lessen the appearance of my hair.

My hair used to fall out by
the handfuls daily, it could have
been I wasn't careful enough
I was combing everyday...
washing with shampoo... EVERYDAY!!!
(( Yeah... I know... I know))
But in April (last month) I started
using MTG and MNT and noticed
my hair wasn't falling out anymore
in the shower... even though
I was still combing the same way
I noticed a difference w/in the
first two weeks of using both products...
Then I discovered CO-WASHING
ITS AMAZING!!
I KNOW I would get even better
results if I could just
DROP THE COMB
Now I detangle in the shower
and notice a few hairs but
I don't know if its due
to shedding or breakage
The comb/brush/shampoo are the enemy

I JUST NOW stopped seeing breakage two weeks ago:drunk:. I attribute it to the henna treatment I gave myself a few weeks ago and also to the Pibbs dryer. I've noticed that it helps my conditioners penetrate more when I DC leaving my hair tangle free and slippery every time. I only see about 2-5 broken hairs a day now which is a wonderful improvement!

I think I did the biggest no no, but I was desperate. My hir was breaking so bad. I did 3 weeks of intensive protein treatments and breaking stopped completely, I even stopped losing balls of hair I could believe it. I still can't believe it. Week one, I did the Aphogee protein treatment. Week two I used Mizani Kerafuse. Week three, I did Aphogee Keratin reconstructor. I used Joico K-pak Liquid Reconstructor or Salerm Biokera ampoules as my leave in. My breakage came to a screeching hault. I wouldnt recommend this, because I don't think all that protein is good for your hair, but I was at my wits end and willing to try anything. Thank God it worked.

I bascially had to cut off all the hair that was damaged beyond repair. It took exactly six months.

This was me too. The hair grew fast and the length increased. I was getting a bit if breakage the last week of the stretch. Protein and dc and relaxing took care of that.

I used to have a big problem with my ends breaking all of the time.. I thnk silk protein treatments and sealing after the leave in have cured that problem.

I get very little breakage...but i have followed the ways of my hair idol Sylver, and dont comb.....this works wonders....i havent "combed" my hair in weeks...only once a week or every two weeks in the shower with conditioner.

I am still breaking, not as badly since I started using better products, more protein, and better styling methods.

I am trying the no combing bandwagon now, and throwing out my blowdryer.

Obessing over it will make you lose sight of the goal and cut rpematurely when it is not that much breakage.

Absolutely agree with this. I cut ALL my hair off (went from sl to above the ear) because I was obsessing over the breakage and shedding I had. I panicked big time.

my hair has broken off 3 times in my life. 1st time it was beyond repair. i had to cut all off and just start over.
2nd time i cut from apl to above sl.
3rd time was right b4 i joined forum. hair was overprocessed and startd breaking off at the demarcation line. I had 1 inch broken hairs sticking up all over my head. Did an aphogee treatment which stopped breakage immediately..about a week after. went into baby mode. no more touchups for awhile, no combing ..no nothing. nurturing, moisturizing, babying, stretching. worked wonders!!

I've noticed major breakage since my last relaxer at the end of October, but I think it's at least slowing down!! I really hope, anyway. I used a serious protein and that certainly didn't help so now I've been moisturizing like crazy and so far, it seems that the Salerm Wheatgerm mask has really slowed it down! So I'm going to continue using that once a week until it's under control...in the meantime...in repair

Well, I guess this thread keeps getting bumped up because of the people responding to the poll since the last post was 12/12/07. LOL.

Anyway, for those who are answering the survey as "still breaking", are you all still retaining growth?

I have a minimal/acceptable amount of breakage. ITA with the ladies who have said you will always have some breakage, but when your hair is healthy the breakage is minimal. If you are just starting out, and have not been deep conditioning, then give it a couple of months. If your ends are very damaged, you may need to trim them.

ETA: To answer vlm80's question. Yes, my hair is retaining length. My hair started at SL and it's now grazing MBL, and throughout the entire time of this growth I've had some small amount of continued shed and broken hair even though it is healthy.

That's good to know. I just keep seeing that some people get no breakage at all, and I am so surprised mainly because people have the time to actually examine every little hair! I guess I can understand worry if there is a lot of hair in the comb, but otherwise, I just can't see doing this; I would go crazy! Also, I just don't have that kind of time.

I mean its great that they aren't experiencing breakage though.
