BRAIDS?????

Hello Ladies,

I have only worn braids twice in my life and that was during high school. Also, I only wore them for 4—8 days when I did. I am now considering braids to get over the hump. I want my hair to grow to my brastrap and I’m just a tad longer than the point where my growth begins to stagnate and I am sooo nervous.

/images/graemlins/scratchchin.gifMy questions:

1. How much breakage should I expect?
2. How long should I wear a set of braids?
3. How should I care for them?
4. Can I tell the braider to NOT BRAID MY HAIR TIGHT!!! I'm just trying to maintain my ends, but don't want a sparse hairline when all is said and done.
5. Also, I am in the DC/MD/VA area. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

1. If you take of your hair then don't expect much.
2. 4-6 weeks max IMO.
3. Keep you hair moisturized and wash at least weekly. I never have those nasty dirt clumps and I attribute it to my washing.
4. You sure can. I find braiders braid tight because they have 50-11 cheapos insisting on tight braids so it can last longer. As long as you tell them that is not what you want, you won't have a problem, IMO.
5. Sowwy, I'm in NYC can't help you there.

1. agree with CBG
2. for cornrows.. 3-4 weeks
3. agree with CBG.. invest in a good braid spray like African Royale BRX, Scurl, Sta Sof Fro, or Sulfur 8.
4. shoot, you're the one paying, they better do what you say!
5. cant help you on that one either.

Hi AudraChanell, while waiting for suggestions on this thread for a braider, you might want to browse the salon review section of this board. Perhaps there's a braider in the area recommended in that section.

I'm probably a bit anal but one thing I say is, if I needed someone to braid my hair, I'd find someone who does kids' hair...and whom I have watched do kids' hair without them wincing in pain. That's who I'd trust with my head.

When I was growing up in Kenya, I had a stylist who was so gentle she could cornrow a toddler's head while the toddler was asleep and she (the toddler) wouldn't be any the wiser. She used the same gentleness for all her clients, yet did a fantastic job and was so creative that most times I just trusted her to do whatever. A stylist like that is worth seeking.

Keep your eyes open for kids with nice braid styles and if they're with their mothers, find out who did their hair. That's a good way to find a keeper. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Also check out www.growafrohairlong.com for more tips on growing your hair in braids.

Good luck! /images/graemlins/kiss.gif

Ms Claudette's Hair Braiding on New Hampshire Ave. They are good. I didn't go to them the last time I got my hair braided and now I regret it big time.

Hey AudraChanell,

I am also getting braids at the end of the month and will continue to re-do them every two months until April. I would also like to get over my hair hump and give my hair a break from the realxing. The last time that I had braids it was almost 7 years ago. So I think that my relaxer break is more than overdue.

BTW, for those that have worn braids in the past, please post your regimen, including what product you've used?
