5-10-05 3yrs Journaling and (1yr 6 months natural) Healthy Hair
Challenge

Well, people this marks 3 years that I have been journaling here at
BHGO. I hope that all of you have been enlightened to read these
entries for every week of the year Sharing my experience on how I
went from Relaxed through the 14 months of Transitioning phase and
the cut, to Natural. I was in love with my hair when it was relaxed
and healthy and now I love my hair even more that it is natural and
healthy. It was hard at first to let go of the perms, but eventually
I did. For those of you reading and my past entries know that I have
tried like 2 or 3 times, but caved into the relaxer. It is hard,
but PATIENCE was the key word for me. Patience, was the key word for
me when I had relaxed hair. Patience is what has kept my hair
healthy, taking the time to understand what my hair needs .
Why I went natural ?
This is the big question that I have to answer. I think one of
the biggest issues is observing others who are older in age that have
relaxed hair. Starting with family members, who I remember as a
little girl with thick relaxed hair. Now, that I am grown up and
they are older, their hair was thin. I said to myself, now I have
thick hair and looks healthy relaxed now, but will my hair look like
that when I get old? This is when I began to ponder on going
natural. This when I began to look back on past times in the 10th
grade. In the tenth grade for that whole year, I didn't relax my
hair. I remember wearing my hair in a french braid starting at the
top middle of the head and braided to the back. Having it warmed
pressed a few times for school pictures and my hair grew out nice
and thick. My father never liked the fact that I was having my hair
relaxed and would tell me so on more that one occasion, but that
particular year, he was just observing me and I remember him being
happy. That same year, My father died May 1989 and for the funeral,
my aunt (the beautician) relaxed my hair and it was pretty, healthy
and long. I guess at that time, I was not thinking of growing out my
hair as being natural and staying natural. Now, I think to myself,
WHAT IF, I had not permed my hair in 1989? So, I feel that I am
finishing what I started a long time ago.
Hair Tools
Well, I must give thanks to the people at Wal Mart, lol. The
Revlon comb is the best comb ever. They have replaced the Revlon
combs with their own brand called SimplyBasics and it is identical
and cost a little less. It is very wide tooth compared to other
combs. It is what helped me through the journey and the rake comb
too. The Denman brush #3 ($10.00, Sally Beauty Supply) with 7 rows
of flexible nylon bristles, is the best brush I have ever used.
Conair has the same brush for about 3$.
Hair Products
Well, everything as been trial and error this year. I still
recommend using a moisturizing protien deep conditoner. Lustrasilk
Herbal carrot oil deep protien conditoner is one of my favorites.
Also, using a moisturizer, World of Curls Spray activator is great.
Also a good shampoo. I still love Sauve shampoos, they are
inexpensive and do the job of cleansing the scalp and hair. These
products, I can truly say work for my hair.
Hair styling
Well, one thing I learned is that combing hair for relaxed hair
and natural hair is different. Relaxed hair, I had to take my time
and be carelful to comb when wet, but when dry and moistured it was
easy to comb. Natural hair, I find is quite opposite. It is easier
to comb when wet or moist. I think the best tip for natural hair is
to comb the conditioner through the hair. For relaxed hair comb
hair well, before a shampoo to avoid breakage during while hair is
wet. For a hair styling, I just have been wearing my hair in a bun
at the top of the head. As, my best friend says, I am doing
the "Jill Scott thing".

Happy Hair Growing!
