Black People or White People? Whose hair grows the fastest

Normally I'd say it varies by person irrespective of ethnicity, but everytime I run into a hair growin' mutant (you know the ones that get 1 or 1.5 inches every month) they're Caucasian.

ETA: I still think the average is 1/2 an inch/month tho.

I think it all grows about the same.

Sareca, SweetCashew grows about 1" per month.

I think CandiC's grows 1" per month too.

I don't know anybody in real life that isn't white, that grows hair like that. :nono: I'm not saying it don't happen. Just never saw it. :(

I think its all the same as far as rate, generally, but i think they grow it EASIER.

The only time I get 1 inch a month is when I ingest protein in high amounts but normally I get .5 inches a month.

Maybe it’s more of a retention issue. It could be genetics but not necessarily a function of race. I have met a few Caucasian girls who couldn’t grow their hair past apl who were just astounded by the fact that I am black and had such long hair. Then again, it could have been due to health issues with them, so I’m really not sure.

I agree. I think it is a retention issue. I think most people's hair grows at about the same rate, but we just have that issue of more dryness and having weaker strands of hair.

ITA! Some people are going to genetically grow faster, but I believe the avg is .5 in/mo...I do believe we are more "retention" challenged , though (generally speaking of course).

All I can say is that my roommate, who is Caucasian, is a cancer survivor who had a short curly doo this time last year, recovering from that cancer, bless her heart. Now her hair and my hair are just about the same length. My hair may be just an inch or so longer than hers. Her hair is full, a little past shoulder and healthy looking, while I sit here trying to figure out how to get healthy, APL length, she's pretty much almost there without doing much of anything. Then, she always asks me why I do so much to my hair. I have to explain to her that many black women have to do a bit more because our hair tends to be drier and curlier than Caucasian hair, which holds more moisture. I'm beginning to think that all of this work and products are for naught. She doesn't put in energy in her hair at all. Doesn't take supplements. Has a poor diet. Doesn't exercise. Doesn't drink water. Nothing. Nada. I do all these things, and yet her hair length has nearly caught up to mine. I can only surmise that at least she--as a white gal--has much faster-growing hair than I do.

ETA: If I left it up to Boundless Tresses, my hair would be much longer than hers. I can't believe all this NG in just barely 5 weeks post. Bottom line, however: she doesn't have to use BT or any other topical or vitamin/supplement to get growth. She does absolutely nothing except for wash and condition and her hair grows. That's it!

Me too. I think we grow generally the same, but they retain more and easier.

It's not the thing we wanna hear, but it's the truth.:ohwell:

Even if Black hair grew slower than White hair..

What does that REALLY mean?

Its a reason why its hurts folks heart so much to think Black hair doesnt grow as fast as White. Maybe we ought to reassign any premium or supremacy we place on this...

Hmmm...that's really deep, bravenewgirl87!

Its true. I mean, you don't find it odd that we spend the most money on beauty products, but you only see them with the BEST ingredients in their products? Why is it that their products work better on our hair than some of them do on their own? the cosmetic companies don't make that much of an effort to do research on products to suit the average black hair. Its not so much that our hair doesn't grow as fast or we don't retain as much length. Our hair doesn't stand a fighting chance against theirs because their isn't anything decent marketed to us. Notice blacks in other parts of the world; they have amazing hair (albeit short or long) because they have been using tried and true techniques that work, organic or homemade products, and the market acknowleges their exsistance and makes quality products that work for them. America's cosmetics market has never realized the potential of the average black consumer, although they have been getting rich off of us for YEARS!!!! Its only now that certain companies are starting to tap into our market... yeah, after we started making our own products!

Oooo... i going to want for you to stop spreading the truth. There is not a THING wrong with our hair... but there damn sure is something wrong with all the crap we put in it.

Well, before I really understood about my hair I would have said white people, but now I know that it all depends on the individual. I have black friends that have hair that grows extremely fast!

But, in all honesty, and yes I'm being honest, it does say something. Not that I base my self worth on what black men say, but one of my good friends asked me why black women have such a hard time growing hair. He seemed to be suggesting that black women can't be as beautiful as a result of our hair differences. I tried to explain to him that it's not true; it's just that our hair is curlier and drier. It does grow, else we would never need relaxers. He's not necessarily stupid, but he's simply bought into the mainstream myth (as we all have) that black women can't have long hair, no matter what they do unless they weave it to achieve it. And whites as well as other races seem perplexed, too, if they see black women with long hair that's theirs. Being on this forum, you and I know that women can and do grow long hair, but it's just trying to convince others that we're no different. It seems as though we struggle more to combat the notion that beauty standards can only achieved by white women. I want to prove them dead WRONG!!

I don't mean to be cocky... but your friend needs to come stick in hand in my hair! I CUT my hair on purpose... and its very healthy and thick. I mean, i am a hairstylist nightmare and their hands are so tired after dealing with this full thick head of hair. My point is that some black women CHOOSE to have short hair.

I dont feel the need to convince any one of anything.

I certainly dont see the point of trying to prove to another ace I am the same as them.

I also dont see anything inherently wrong with us being different, if that is the case.

I am at peace with either scneario.

Asians tend to be shorter. Should they go around showing White folks and misguided Asian folks ...seee !!!! *points at example of tall Asian person*, I am no differnet... I AM JUST LIKE YOU.

If Black hair grows slower and it does so naturally I dont have a problem with that. It is what it is.
Just because a majority of people think it means something doesnt mean it does. Sometimes a majority just means all the fools are on the same side.

@Bravenewgirl87 you bring up a good point about products. That is something I have never thought about. When I went natural I did stop shopping for hair products in the ethnic hair section and my hair thrived. People still dont believe I use suave conditioner.

I think that if it is true that our hair grows as the same rate as other races, it could very well be a matter of product, and lack of education on how to care for the hair well. Also it makes it hard to compare when a majority of Black women mishandle their hair on a consistent basis. Sure we all have our examples of the Black girl who grew 3 feet of hair over the summer, or the White girl who grew 5 feet of hair a week after she shaved her head. But comparing Apples to Apples is very hard in this case. Also comparing relaxed Black hair to natural white hair may pose a problem too.

I don't argue too much about the relaxed vs. natural deal... but i have to be honest.... as long as black people continue to relax, texturize blow-out, etc., we will always have hair struggle. These are methods that are not native to the black scalp and your hair will ALWAYS stuggle to thrive. Not saying that it won't thrive, but I am positive that black women would be able to have the same lackluster approach to their hair and watch the inches grow and grow if they stop putting chemicals in it. Everything knows you can't fail with mother nature. Not only that, but maybe the ethnic hair market would be more reputable if black women were natural. The needs of the consumer would change and they would have to produce items that satisfy.

Right!!!! You're always going to have your minority of people who hair grows well with a relaxer BUT I think that most((((MAJORITY))) black people hair would progress more without being relaxed. Consequently, until we start to re-think our fragile hair or provide it with tremendous amoutns of TLC then we will continue to see black women abusing their hair.

I ain't mad at 'cha! That's what I tried to explain to him. But he's no different that most people, black and white, who cannot accept that black women can achieve what you have. I'm just going on my own experience. Congratulations on all of your hair growth success, by the way! ;)

I was being tongue n' cheek with my post. Of course, I don't go around trying to prove anything openly. But, we are here on this website for a reason: we want to achieve HEALTHY hair first and long hair ultimately. I think it's that much sweeter for others to see and believe that we can achieve it, too. And it's not necessarily to prove to others but to ourselves. ;)

Whats even funnier about it is that my hair was worse before i joined LHCF. All that hair would just be a monster to control, so i keep it at a presentable and workable length. My main goal is transitioning.

I'd love to transition as well. That's really my ultimate goal. When I was natural, I think I got impatient simply because I didn't know how to care for it. I will eventually transition, I'm certain of that!
