Biotin=Very Hard/Strong Newgrowth

Just would like to let you ladies know my experience with biotin. I have been taking MSM for about 2 weeks but I doubt that is long enough to make these changes. But I have been taking biotin for about 3-4 mos and I think this is the culprit.

First off I notice instead of extremely wavy like my newgrowth used to be my new growth is growing in as little spirals or coils. I think it is so cute. But those spirals/curls are so thick/black(my hair is usually dark brown)/and strong. When I try to bend them they bounce back up like "What?!" lol I am starting to wonder if my relaxer is going to cut it.

Secondly, my nails are growin so long and are so hard!! I tried to cut them and they also gave some resistance. Usually I can't keep nails for nothing, but these nails act like they are here to stay. I accidenly scratched myself and scraped some skin off. Ouch!

But I am very satisfied with biotin, and I recommend it to anyone who is up for popping pills. I am taking 5000mcg ( i got them from drugstore.com) per day.

Just thought I would share.

I agree that Biotin is the bomb! I take GNC 2500 mg with B-Complex. I ran out so I have to buy some more. And you are right about the nails. My shot up in no time.

ITA on the biotin. My nails are as hard as nails. They are so hard and so white, gives them a manicured look. And newgrowth is noticably thicker than my ends. I take the Vitamin Shoppe brand 5 mg, I also get an additional 2500 mcg from UltraNourishair.

Yeah I know my nails would always grow and break before I was taking biotin or vitamins. They grow in strong but I have been slacking with the vitamins lately. Thanks for sharing.

Does this make ur new growth harder to manage?

Whoa, then maybe I need to rethink my vits, (it has Biotin) b/c I already have a matting/tangling problem...

HA! So it's not my imagination. I have been on Brewer's yeast since 2003 and noticed the growth comes in STRONG. My nails are the same way..tough. It is good BUT kind of bad in that the relaxers don't seem to "take" like they should. It takes more to get it semi straight. It's become such a hassle that I'm now transitioning. I'm hoping to try and get 1" a month so I will cut 1"/month.
I added Biotin (and MSM) to the mix who knows what will happen now. You all are taking quite a bit..no? I take 250mcg like the bottle says...hm

Interesting...have you all noticed any negative side effects from biotin? Just wondering...before I jump on the bandwagon!

My skin has been horrible, like three pimples will crop up overnight. That is very unusual for me and I have very good grooming habits and use good, consistent skin care products, so I know its the Biotin. I also drink tons of water when I take it after getting advice here, but that did not help. :(

Tell me about it. I think the biotin is your cause for harder hair. I say this cause as I sit here with my relaxed hair, I think back to my natural hair that I had. When I was natural and taking biotin to grow out my hair my hair was strong and fighting me. It would coil onto itself and cause knots on the ends which I would have to then cut off. BUT, it did help grow out my hair I think. I now know why my natural hair was sooo difficult to style; all those darn supplements. I also now regret returning to relaxing cause the only reason I did was cause of style options and how hard my hair was to style. Which I now know was probably do to the supplements. I still don't know my hair's true natural potential/beauty. Although I do know that my hair can grow to be at least bsl cause I sit here now with almost bsl hair and since I went natural in 04 and returned to relaxing up till now I've cut off about 7 inches. But even after saying all that about the biotin, I would still use it; just less of it.

Sorry for th novel. Good luck with the biotin.

I just started taking my Biotin a little over three weeks ago and my hair is currently in braids. I am anxiously looking forward to see a change in hair texture. I have however noticed that my nails are growing non stop.

I am glad to see I am not alone.

Newsgrl I have bumps VERY bad when I first started taking them and then I also started getting headaches. All that went away after about 2 weeks. It take a while for your body to get used to them.

ElleB it doesn't make my newgrowth harder to manage. I haven't gave mysself a relaxer yet so we'll soo. I'll update once I do. But I doubt that it will be a problem.

I have tiny pimples cropping up and my skin is already acne prone. I'm now taking 1200 mcg a day instead of taking my Ultra Hair Pill (which contains 2500 mcg).

I take mad biotin and have had nothing but great experiences. My worst experiences were when I was off of them. Like you, I could not grow nails for nothing until taking them.

Thanks for sharing! I have been taking biotin for about a month or so(i think? ). Started with 3000 mcg and just bumped it up to 4500 mcg maybe a week ago, and I can see that my nails are definitely starting to get harder. I don't know about my hair yet, but we'll see.

Two weeks for the headaches to go away??? Oh.. yikes! Biotin headaches are the worst. Once I stopped taking it, it tooks 3 days for them to stop. Oh goodness... what am I willing to suffer for stronger nails????

I had good experiences w/ biotin. My skin was healthier (I drink a lot of water) and my nails strong (before they used to tear often). My hair was VERY healthy and thick but I noticed like others that relaxers didn´t take as well.
I liked that my menstrual cycle was lighter and less painful. With one particular brand of biotin I had no cramps! It´s a shame I can´t get it anymore! Back then I took 5 mg daily.
My doctor advised me to take it only once a year for two or three months in a row. I plan to take it for one month after every touchup to help my scalp recover.

For those of you who stopped taking biotin, how long did it take to get out of your system? I am thinking about not taking it anymore if it would be behind my relaxers not taking....
