Based on what Sylver2 does....

I am giving up my indentured servitude to buns and protective styling! I think that what I have learned after close study of my own regimen (compared to past regimens), the regimen of others, and board postings is this:

As long as myhair is healthy overall, I maintain moisture, and I'm kind to my hair with regular maintance (deep conditioning, dustings, trims), then I should be able to wear my hair out like regular society and still have hair that retains growth. Sylver2 does!! And based on her progress, I think it's worth a shot!

Couple issues/questions:

1. I have three actively involved in activities kids, work full time, plus teach part-time.....I don't want to have to do roller sets all the time (takes a while).

2. Who has success with weekly blow drying (on cool settings of course), and what dryer (comb attachments) would you recommend?

Thanks a bunch!!

I am right behind you... I am tired of the buns only. I gave up on that a while ago, and i cant spend all of my evenings roller setting and not have any time for my child...

I soooo agree. What's the point of having healthy, long or growing hair if you can't enjoy it and you spend all your time trying to protect it. I don't use heat, I wash and condition often and I do believe that less manipulation is best, but I intend to wear my hair and not to let it wear me out :wink2: .

Blessings!

I do wear my hair out almost everyday, but the only way I have been able to do this is with rollersets. My schedule is pretty tight too but I usually do my rollersts on sat or sun. it takes me about 2 1/2 hours total & that includes wahing, DC, rolling & drying.
An alternative to that could be air drying & then flat ironing or rolling your hair. I have air dried in 2-4 plaits & flat ironed & that worked pretty good. HTH

Good for you!!
See how it works out. Keep it moisturized, dusted etc.
Its no fun having hair and not being able to enjoy it.

I don't know about the other ladies but when I use to blowdry every week it didn't work for me. My hair was dry and stayed the same length. I blowdry 1-2 times a month using a ionic comb attached dryer and moisturize it everyday as well as keep my ends moisturized then sealed with jojoba...and I just leave it alone:-)

Thanks for responsding!!! I know I really should rollerset but....

Yeah, the rollersets....thinking....it's just so much time. I mean I will do them, but....by the time I come back from basketball games/practices/training sessions, mentoring programs, dance lessons, church clubs, gymnastics, and whatever else my kids are apart of (yeah I'm one of those mom's who gets her kids so wrapped up they don't have time for anything else...I know, I know)....I just don't feel like rolling and setting. That's why the bun has been so convenient as well. I'd even do braid outs, but my hair is so curly (natural) that they come out a little too tight for my liking....I'll do the braid out more when my hair gets to bra strap length....

Well ladies?? Anyone successfullly blow dry? aside from Sylver2? Maybe I can go back and forth between roller sets and blow drying on cool settings...

I want to say that SweetCashew does this. I cannot remember exactly, but I remember her posting something like that.

Your hair looks very pretty and you really made a lot of progress. I remember when you got your hair cut and even then I thought your hair looked so pretty, full and thick.

Ahhhhh......I see! So you wouldn't recommend the blowdryer weekly....okay so maybe I can roller set one week and then try blowdry/airdry and flat iron on alternating weeks. This would cut down on blowdry time...

Okay, okay....I see a new regimen developing

What about braidouts???

Congratulations tthreat08.

I blow dry twice a week using an ionic, tourmaline blow dryer. I have still been making progress. I roll my hair the rest of the week.

I love braidouts....on other people's heads...yours are awesome! The problem I have with braidouts is my hair is so curly that after it dries and I remove the braids, it's all sitting on top of my shoulders like I'm Rosanne Rosanna Danna (I'm dating myself I know....old Saturday Night Live character played by Gilda Radner)....I like a more relaxed looking braid out...any suggestions on how I might achieve this?

I agree to a certain extent.

If your hair has reached a healthy point and isn't very dry, I say wear it down.

I think rotating is the best if you're not as healthy as needed ...
  • 100% protective (bun,braid,weave, french roll )
  • partial protective ( ponytail all, upsweeps, ponytail most and leave back hanging)
  • no protective ( all hair hanging )
I chopped my raggedy ends off (nerve racketing) and I'm doing 100% until APL...after them, i'm in rotation....:look:

You may want to check out Marchariamour (sp?) fotki. She does a wash and roller set once a week, wears it out a few days and wear it up toward the end of the week. Then start the process over again. She's retained alot of length, and her hair is gorgeous.

Yep, I agree also. And I thought once you got past shoulder legnth, I didnt think that protective styling was a necessity. I could be wrong, though.:ohwell:

Yeah bsugar, that's what i was alluding to....i think rotating gives you balance, some protective styling AND freedom to enjoy your hair...I'm going to do more protective right before relaxer time...i like that plan :)

For a more relaxed braid out do it on dry hair. This stops it from curling up so tightly:) -The length of time you stay in the braids could also determine how tight the curl will be.

You are very pretty and so is your hair. Good luck with your new regimen

Overnight Flexirods are AWESOME too!!! I do it on dry hair also.

I don't wear my hair out but when I wear Flexirod sets there is no quilt and they look great on me!!!

Thanks alot! I guess this would be one of my bow out days...I will dry enough to pull out the curls, then braid. I'll try it and see!

Congrats with the cut. It will bring you nothing but great things as long as you continue to practice healthy hair. When it grows back, it will be very thick at the end and look lush ! ;)

I did the same thing ! :) Happy growing and see you at thick, APL ! :)

Okay,

I I will purchase a new dryer with comb attachment (ion)...

I will rollerset everyother week...alternating between blow dry on cool setting, braid out and flat iron.

I'll let you know what happens after a couple a couple months. 2 months will be long enough to determine whether it's working. I suspect all that will happen is that I'll be happy!

Thanks again!

Thanks thicknlong! I actually cut my hair over a year ago...now I'm back at APL! I'm on my way to bra strap, and without the layers. :)

:lachen: This is exactly who I look like after I airdry my hair loose...hence, why I never airdry loose anymore :ohwell:

I wouldn't recommend the blowdry once a week...I've gotten a good rollerset down to 15 minutes on my hair (I'm just past SL)...with a bit of practice it becomes very easy.

Your hair is beautiful. I believe that if you continue to pamper your and use all of the wonderful tips that you've learned here you will be able to gain and retain length. However, I would not blow dry weekly. I retired my blowdryer in 2005 and my hair is still thanking me. I don't even miss it. Why not do a roller set on Sat and then wrap it at night. Wear it down a couple of days and then towards the end of the week pull it back or opt for somthing low maintenance like one braid or something. You are very attractive and have curly hair so you could easily get away with this. I just would not blow dry.

Just wanted to say you've made great progress! Your hair is beautiful!

Also, maybe you can try drying under a hooded dryer, perhaps before your braidout. Not as direct as a blowdryer but still pretty quick. I do this sometimes.

Good luck with your new regimen!

I've always done my braidouts after my hair has dried (airdried in my case). In this way, it doesn't draw up that much, I retain most of my length.

You and your hair are very pretty! You made excellent progress with your hair's growth too. Your hair can still look just as long as it is now with your braidout on dry hair.

Maybe banding until your hair dries and then braiding. Banding will help your natural hair dry more stretched out almost like a blow-out. I have pics in my album of how I band my hair.

Yeah, I think I've come to the conclusion that weekly blow drying will not be a good idea.
