Bad ingredients

In conditioners I always look for glycerin, oils such as jojoba / almond..anything besides mineral oil. Maybe some protein and anything natural eg, cherry bark , sea kelp etc etc. stuff you can read !!! I avoid conditioners that are all chemicals.
I like hair products with 'cones' in it too but that is a personal choice.
I find that most products loaded with botannicals tend to work better.

Avoid shampoos with Ammonium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate can be harsh too, depending on the overal formulation of the shampoo. Sodium Laureth Sulfate is more gentle, and if you can find a shampoo that doesn't contain these, or they are listed later in the ingredients listing, even better!
Sometimes alcohols are confusing because some chemicals that have the word alcohol are a conditioning agent. In most cases, SD Alcohol is drying (usually in hair sprays, etc). I tend to avoid products that list 'fragrance' high on the list (followed by several more ingredients) because I tend to get a skin allergic reaction because of it (but thats just me).
Although shampoos its kind of easy to stay away from the harsh ones, conditioners sometimes is just trial and error.

Since you also wanted to know what ingredients are good, for heat styling, look for the ingredient "phytantriol." Valleygirl posted a very informative post about it. If you do a search, you should be able to find it.

As for shampoos, since my hair is made out of protein, I look for protein in the ingredients - and it's been quite a journey to finally find at least one that my hair loves. Protein not only strengthens my hair but increases its elasticity, which is important because relaxing my hair has taken quite a bit of it out.

Here's a brief list of proteins, which should be listed as one of the first ingredients. <ul type="square"> [*]shea butter [*]glycerin [*]sulfur [*]carotene [/list]
It's easier for me to list good ingredients because many of the ones listed to avoid, like mineral oil, ammonium sulfates, 'cones, are ones used by some of the members here without ill effect. For example, Pantene Clarifying shampoo has both ammonium sulfates which is excessively harsh on my hair, leaving it matted, tangle, and rough feeling...but I've seen a number of people here list it as a product they use and like.

ETA: I'm also a fan of protein conditioners, like Aubrey Organics' GPB conditioner, which leave my hair strengthened and moisturized. My hair also seems to like lanolin in conditioners.

Oh, I *wish* that was my hair! Instead it belongs to model Cyrstele. But she is my current inspiration because I'm seriously toying with transitioning back to natural. I agree, Buffalo Soldier, her hair is fabulous!
