Hey all! I've learned a lot from this board on ingredients that are not so great for our hair but I still feel like I'm missing some. Can we list them here?

I know of:

Leave ins/conditioners:
Mineral oil- (Not sure why...it's in my cheapo coocnut oil I noticed)
SOME types of alcohol (Drying)

Shampoos:
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (Drying)
Ammonium Luareth sulfate (Drying)

Styling gels:
Silicone (Drying?)

Feel free to post others!

I found this from a website that talked about bad ingredients in cosmetics (it looks like the last 6 lines pertain to hair):

synthetic binders, fillers, emulsifiers, thickeners
cortisone, tar, anti-biotics, steroids, phosphates
dyes, colorings, fragrances
mineral oil, paraffin, lanolin, petrolatum, PVP/VA copolymer, DEA, TEA, MEA
alcohols, formaldehyde, acetone
alpha and beta hydroxy acids
preservatives, parabens, ureas, propylene glycol
sodium laurel or laureth sulfate, ammonium laurel or laureth sulfate

I see that most of these ingredients are in several hair products. Does anyone know why some of these are bad?

Shampoo:

2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane 1,3-Diol -suspected of organ probs/cancer?

I don't get the petrolatum thing as folks are finding the whole vaseline baggie thing really helpful for them...maybe it's bad to use on the scalp?

I see urea in a lot of "natural" hair products. :-/

Urea is in urine, but it isn't in and of itself urine. It's an organic substance that is actually used for stuff like making plastics and whatnot. I don't know why it's bad for hair. :scratchch

I agree on the Sodium Laureth Sulfate (Drying) and Ammonium Luareth sulfate (Drying)!!! Since I stopped using shampoos with those ingredients, my scalp isn't irritated and my hair started growing! I now use Aubrey shampoo that I get from the health food store and it is wonderful!!!!!!!!!

Actually, all of these are in my staples and I love them. Nexxus Humectress contains Mineral oil, CHI oil (and other serums) have silicones, and many shampoos have SLS but still won't strip or dry out the hair. It really depends on where the ingredient is in relation to the other ingredients, how much mineral oil versus water, stuff like that.

dont confuse sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). SLES is the most hair friendly. SLS is the harsh one

That page is scary......are they exagerrating a bit do you think?
I kinda think so. It's like everything is cancerous! :smirk: They also might be big promoters of natural products! :)

Bump.

Apparently just 'bump' alone makes the message too short, so now i'm writing something else.

Bump.

does anyone remember that post about a girl who developed a tumor that MAY have been linked to Dudley's products? I can't remember the ingredient that was in it that caused it. Does anyone remember?
