BAD day at church (vent)

I probably should keep this to myself BUUUUTTTTT

I have to tell someone. Got up this morning and wore myself out praising and worshipping GOD this morning for 2.5 hours. Afterwhich I didn't really want to go to church. So I ask the Lord to order my steps etc. Got a second wind got dressed and rush out the door.

Got to church and noticed the pastor was not there, so I went to the ladies room fixed my makeup and heard the speaker say the pastor is not going to make it this morning a visiting apostle will be coming shortly until then we will worship the Lord. I went out and got in the flow. About an hour later they said he had a flat but was yet coming, I continue to praise the Lord with the others.

Finally the Apostle shows up and 2 things erked my nerves. He stood up gave honor to the set angel of the house which was good, then he proceeds to taking up an offering and tithes! Had not read one scripture or preached one word. Oh my he gives new meaning to church Unusally.

Then some lady comes over to tell me that my skirt is too short. My skirt comes to the bottom of my knee caps!! Darn do I need to wear a Robe!

So I am sitting there OFFENDED with my tithe and offering in my hand, He tells the congregation to get in line to pay the offering so I am still sitting there. After a moment of self talk I got up with my tithe in my hand and walk out the door and drove off. BUT the WORST thang happened after that. . . I HEARD the Lord say "go back" twice and I came right on home, saying to myself I am sewing this seed in Benny Hinn's ministry.

O lord forgive me. Offended and disobedience - pray for me.

So lets talk about clothing at church. . . I was taught that your arm pits should be covered, no cleaveage in the front or the back(side) showing, and you should not be able to see the inside of your thighs.

What is proper dress at church? I am not trying to look like someones granny!

gn....don't confuse tradition with religion. Standards?...it really depends on the church you belong to and sometimes what God has brought you out of. Some churches aren't allowed to cut/trim hair, back in a day saints couldn't wear red, neck had to be covered, etc. At my church, men can't have facial hair, women must wear skirts..(I wear them at church, but will wear pants when I am at home), no jewlery, etc. Your skirt legnth should not have been a problem in my opinion, but then again, that just may be the standards at your church. If not, that person should've kept their comments to themselves. This is a sticky topic in general cuz there are soooo many different standards.....

Proper dress?....What is proper for one person may not be proper for another.

Aww, sorry you had a bad day. :ohwell: There's a lot going on in your post, so I'll just focus on your question about dress at church. I think you should be modest, but conforming to a particular style of dress (i.e. skirts that graze the floor and huge shapeless shirts) is overly religious IMO. If God has assigned you to a particular church, listen to leadership, observe your first lady and other female leaders close to your age group, and use common sense (is the outfit too provocative, too tight, or would it be distracting to either sex, etc.). I may get stoned for saying this, but God made us women, and I don't think we need to look like nuns. Still, it takes a very confident woman to cover up stylishly and gracefully and not feel the need to show off EVERYTHING.

Here's a scripture regarding the person who said your skirt was too short :

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
I Samuel 16:7

Only you and God know the condition of your heart. If your heart is right with God, He'll let you know whether you are dressing in a way that is not pleasing in His sight. Eventually it will become natural. You cannot please everyone. It's absolutely impossible. The most important person to please is God.

Ok. for the record, we know the clothing ain't the heart of the matter, right? Seriously.....

You can go to church BUTT NAKED but the most important thing is for you to obey the voice of the Lord and get that right. I don't say that to you in rebuke, but in sisterly love. If I were you, I would get up, drive to the church and slip that tithing envelope under the bars.... I would do WHATEVER I had to do to get that right before the sun goes down on this day.

Why should your local church have to suffer financially because the visiting apostle did something different than what you are used to? Why should the Lord's house suffer because somebody said something to you about your skirt? Please understand that all that is called DISTRACTION. DISTRACTION. DISTRACTION. Don't fall for that okey-doke from the devil.

Yep!:yep: Great post!!!!!!

I spent a chunk of today's church service in the BATHROOM STALL CRYING MY EYES OUT. I was in there about 10-15 minutes until I had the presence of mind to send somebody to go get my cousin. How about they sent the medical doctor in to check on me! Ha! I wouldn't open the stall until my cousin got there. They cleared the bathroom out. I almost choked on my own saliva and was throwing up nothing but air. My cousin prayed with and for me until I could get myself together to go back into service. Mind you, I had just sang praise and worship before all this happened....

I feel like such a sucker.... that's not God....

I understand. Today was a hard day for me. I am really trying to be patient in my church, but lately I've been feeling so distant. I have more significant services when I am in other churches.

I had to sing a solo, which is always hard for me, and I felt really alone. I just kept hearing negative voices of people who discouraged me from doing things in public as a child, which I prayed away because I knew they were not of God.

At a planning retreat I mentioned that the greatest thing we could contribute to our church for God is our love for him and one another. It was dead silent after I made the comment. I just haven't felt the same since.

It bothers me that the people in my church seem more focused on appearance than love. I walked into another church this afternoon for a black history program I was invited to perform at and it was so beautiful. They enacted the march on washington. The room was filled with love, even though I am an AME in a baptist church wearing pants.

I was feeling wonderful until my Bff told me some of the unfortunate inappropriate things that are going on between members of the choir who are my friends and the director after service.

It just made me realize how toxic that environement can be. She had to leave service.

I really do love my church, but it hurts because we don't do the kind of evangelism I know we can do, and we don't treat people who love.

I tend to agree with this.

Was the week a bad week or were your just feeling melancholy? It happens, I hope you feel better now.:yep:

Past two weeks with regard to church and organized religion :look::perplexed have been confusing and intense and painful.

Don't know if I'm blowing it out of porportion (with the assistance of the devil) or what.... I just want and need to get past it.

You are so right, I went to church and for the first time I left worse off than I went. I felt like Jonah, at home wondering what I had missed. T& O still in my purse.

*Sigh*...Another reason why i don't feel guilty about finding a new church.

Many, MANY times i have had the same self-talk situation about whether i should get up or just stay and be obedient.

If there is something that is obviously wrong, ignorant, backwards, i have no problem getting up and having church in my own home.

Nope. Don't let this thread justify your passivity in seeking a church home.
NOTE: **YOUR/YOU is used in the general sense**

I say that gently but firmly for two reasons: 1) Jesus went to synagogue EVERY WEEK, as was His custom (Luke 4:16). There were LOTS of synagogues around, and as we know, the Jews did not receive Jesus favorably, but some did, and so Jesus found a place to go to worship. If Jesus did it, we have no excuse.

2) Wherever you go, there you are. In other words, we take our "stuff" with us, our good as well as our UNRESOLVED problems. So if you have a problem at one church and you leave that church WITHOUT dealing with that situation, it's going to follow you and haunt you until you turn around and FACE that PROBLEM and deal with it.

There are no perfect people or perfect churches. Only a perfect Lord. There is a church out there for each and every one of us, just as Jesus found a synagogue to worship. I've been at my church too long and I have church pastors who have proven themselves as servants of integrity. So this rough patch can and shall be overcome, to the glory of God. And another thing, if the Lord is leading one to another church, He will make that path straight, according to Proverbs 3:5-6.

ITA. My church is conservative but we can wear jewelry, makeup, our hair in whatever style (but they teach against braids on men or men looking feminine), i only wear pants to church in the winter, dresses/skirts in spring/summer. Dress code is conservative. No short skirts or tight fitting clothes for women.

how do you know that God was telling her to go back to give a tithe??? she said no message had been preached/taught so maybe He wanted her to get the word since that is why we go to a house of worship - not to pay tithes, you can do that through the mail or direct withdrawal from a paycheck.

The OP said that she heard the Lord TWICE to GO BACK. To me, this meant GO BACK and follow through on all aspects of church attendance, participation, involvement, INCLUSIVE OF giving tithes. However, since the church service was OVER, the ONE THING she could still do was to give her tithes and offerings.

From the OP's story, I gathered that she left church BEFORE the service had ended, so who's to know if a message had been preached AFTER the receipt of tithes and offerings? How does the OP know that maybe the visiting apostle had DIRECTIONS from the LORD and/or the appointed pastor to receive tithes and offerings PRIOR TO the delivery of the Word? And here's where we saints MISS IT: the Lord speaks to the appointed leader for the direction of the church service, so if something happens differently than what we expect or are used to, the Lord doesn't have to inform us. We are to listen and obey the appointed leader as that appointed leader is led by the Lord. Now, if that appointed leader/pastor STRAYS away from the Word, then we are no longer obligated to obey/listen.

A couple of quick things:
1) We do not PAY tithes and offerings. We GIVE them, willingly, gladly, cheerfully.

2) We do not "mail in" our tithes and offerings. We BRING them, according to the Word of God. (Please understand that I don't mean this absolutely; when we can bring them directly to the Lord, we should do so. But there are times when we may be out of town or that the arrangement is such that it is easier/better to do direct withdrawal).

3) This issue/situation is less about the money of the tithe and more about OBEDIENCE and DISCIPLINE...in that when something uncomfortable happens to us at church, we don't turn tail and run like a PUNK. When many of us were hanging out in the street, and somebody said something we didn't like, we didn't turn and run, we stood our ground and DARED somebody to say it twice. But soon as we come to the church, and something is said or done that we don't like, we punk out. Time out for punking out on God. Time out for us punking out on the devil.

1. we do PAY tithes but we are supposed to do so hilariously
2. they can be mailed etc. this includes if u are in the same area of your church but your schedule does not allow you to attend the scheduled services or if you are ill or if you are out of the area (work/military etc) or if you just want to do it that way. there is no scripture that instructs you HOW to bring gifts to the storehouse, just that you get it to the storehouse and in my book that means by any means necessary including snail mail.
3. well, i'm not taking up her position, she can answer as to whether she ran like a PUNK as you say. i will say that is very un-godly of you and certainly not Christ-like for you to say. Dare I suggest you may need to be reminded to speak things in love?

ET: i re-read the OP. please show me what i missed i did not see where the service was over. also, i apologize to the OP for getting off topic b/c what she asked was about how do dress in church not our take on her attitude re the guest teacher or tithing.

We GIVE tithes. Genesis 14:20: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

2. they can be mailed etc. this includes if u are in the same area of your church but your schedule does not allow you to attend the scheduled services or if you are ill or if you are out of the area (work/military etc) or if you just want to do it that way. there is no scripture that instructs you HOW to bring gifts to the storehouse, just that you get it to the storehouse and in my book that means by any means necessary including snail mail.

I made the note that the "bring" is not absolute and that there may be situations where other delivery forms make more sense. But that that should be the EXCEPTION, not the rule/norm.

I said it just like I said it and I meant it just like I said it. I didn't call the OP a punk. I said it's a PUNK MOVE to let silly stuff distract us from the real deal. It's equally ungodly when we don't walk in our holy boldness and let the enemy distract us with things that, quite honestly, are MEANINGLESS in comparison. Read my previous posts CAREFULLY. The issue about the skirt is meaningless when it drives her AWAY from the house of Lord, where she could have missed her blessing. But THANKS BE TO GOD for His grace and mercy, the OP will not miss out.

You know why I can call it a punk move? Because I know it when I see it because I'VE BEEN THERE and we have to hold each other accountable and to use our testimonies to help others so they will not have to go through the same mess. We can point out the pitfalls and traps of the enemy so others can avoid them.

Based on the points that you've focused on here, I see where your perspective is. So noted.

Again, I strongly encourage to read my posts carefully. With regard to your edited point, I said the following in my post "From the OP's story, I gathered that she left church BEFORE the service had ended...."

Also, per the time the OP started her thread here yesterday, the church service was most likely over.

i guess the only person that can clear that up is the OP.

punk move or punk, it is not Christ-like to say such period i have no beef w/u. i choose to be wrong so that we can have peace and u let it go.

So noted that the OP is in the best place to provide such a clarification.

And let's not go there to position oneself as the martyr re. having no beef and choosing to be wrong and all that. That's a form of manipulation that I shall not entertain or pacify.

We are engaging in a conversation and we are presenting our opinions and we can disagree and it doesn't have to be a salvation-breaking matter. I own what I said so there's nothing to let go of and my responses aren't disturbing my peace.

In fact, it's reminding me of some fundamentals about this Christian walk. The devil ain't a happy camper and so when we're at the brink of a breakthrough, he comes full force but we know he's got to go through the Lord Jesus Christ before he can do ANYTHING to us and the Lord won't put on us more than we can bear. I know that I dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1). So it's gonna be alright, in the MATCHNESS name of the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Peace to you.

What in the world????:nono:

I would suggest that as believers, we make sure we READ each post before we respond in a manner that is not becoming as sisters in the Lord.

Reading each post carefully, helps us to better understand what the poster is really saying and it also causes the situation to not turn for the worse, as it seemed to do so here, unnecessarily.

If we attack and consume one another, how can we be a light upon a hill which cannot be hidden? And, how can those who need the Lord see that light?

I'm praying for this forum....seems like there are some little fires that are being spread lately, and we must put the fire out.....period.

Loving you with the love of the Lord!

I left before the word went forth.

The whole ordeal disturbed me deeply well into the night. I should've obey the voice of the Father. Lesson learned offensive will come but so will instructions.

This is the day the Lord has made let us all just REJOICE.

Like you said RR

"when we're at the brink of a breakthrough, he comes full force but we know he's got to go through the Lord Jesus Christ before he can do ANYTHING to us "

Didn't want to miss my breakout.

and IMO u chose to voice your opinion in not a Christ like manner.

in addition to that u were incorrect on a matter.

and finally, no one is being a martyr. i'm just not one to argue over insignificant issues.

the OP was not wrong for leaving, and yet your Opinion came across as though she was out of line. Only the HS convicts, not your, my or other's opinions. the OP is convinced that the HS did convict her but my statement was PERHAPS it was to go back and hear the word, not necessarily to PAY her tithe.

a tithe is an obligation that is paid, not an offering (something sowed) or a gift (an optional donation above one's tithe).

Now, this is what I'm talking about. You "listen" and you "understand" and that's all that matters.

Thank you for this post, gng1!!!
