Back to dark brown (WHEW!) and some thoughts...

Well...

This was a REVOLUTIONARY haircare breakthrough week for me...

First, my hair is SLOWLY changing back to a normal dark brown color. This relieves me because it means I can maintain my hair at a dark brown until I want to go lighter again. I think next time around I'm gonna go STRICTLY with T&T Bronze - no substitutes.

I also discovered the wonders of the drawstring ponytail (Adrienne, girl, I'm STALKING your posts now, I'm planning on adopting a regime very similar to yours to push my hair over this mid-back/BS hurdle I'm facing now - your '02 to '03 growth results are REMARKABLE) and am planning on using it daily as I move into pahse two of my hair growth journey. Phase two will include the religious use of protective styling (something I've toyed with but never really adopted in the past) and sticking to a core group of products to maximize simplicity and consistency. Keeping my ends protected will be the focal point of phase two. I have made a list of surefire products on my hair, purchased them in bulk, and have given away SCORES of products that are not in the core group.

What I noticed looking at my pics is that while my hair is growing I seem to be retaining only about 4 inches of hair, at best, annually. The only thing I DON'T do, that I've been told repeatedly is key on growing hair BS and beyond, is scaling down to the lowest common "what works" denominator and sticking to it, and protective styles. Phase two is designed to see once and for all, whether these are the missing ingredients in my quest for waistlength hair.

I also remembered that one thing that worked well for me in the past was using Garlic Shampoo. I bought a bottle today and took it with me to the salon and was struck by how little hair was in the stylists comb in every phase of the process. Far less than normal even, and CERTAINLY far less than has been in my comb the past two weeks or so now that I am in shed mode for the fall.

Garlic is rumored in Latino hair circles to stop shedding and promote the growth of long, strong hair.

This will be a staple in a regime that will otherwise include only the following....

Dudley's Hair Rebuilder (I replaced Keraphix with this, upon careful evaluation I find that the Dudley's product does a better job for the purposes intended) (Ultra Mild Protein Conditoner)
Jheri Redding Protein Pac (Slightly more potent than the Dudleys' - contains Collagen Protein)
Sebastian Moisture Base (Light Mois. Cond)
Kenra KIE (Heavy Mois. Cond)
Motions Nourish (Leave In)
Kemi Oyl (Protection for Ends)
ORS Jojoba (Heavy Protection for Ends)
St. Ives Vanilla & Edelweiss for mositurizing ends (Mois. Ends)
Motions Oil in Mild - with one part diex y uno added to it to promote slower breaking down of the curl pattern.

I'm hoping for a real breakthrough this winter. I'd LOVE to retain at LEAST 6 inches of hair this year.

I also found yet another wonderful Dominican stylist uptwon (she does EXACTLY what I tell her to and agrees with all of our methods and theories on gorwing relaxed hair long). I am very hopeful that phase two will yeild stellar results.

Wish me luck!

I have a jar of Henna Queen Garlic Treatment that I plan to try soon. To keep from getting on my hair buddy's nerves
grin.gif
, can I get the same results from adding garlic essential oil to my favorite shampoos and conditioners or does it have to "ready made"?

If I use heat, will the odor linger in my hair?

I don't have any nerves Sassy..so you could never be on them...

laugh.gif
And if anyone else has nerves you JUST LET ME AT 'EM!

Hmmm - Though I haven't ever heard of adding garlic oil to stuff, I imagine it would be stinky. I have been to various Dominican salons that add actual cloves of garlic to their conditioners, and the funk factor is off the chizain.

I opt to use a shampoo because the smell does not linger when I use it this way. Buuut....I also
sekret.gif
use an odorless formula so I don't pass out.
laugh.gif

I'd say go with the ready made if you can find it, but if you dont mind the smell, the oil additions would be just as good at effectuating the overall beenfit of the garlic - which is the point.
smile.gif

Your henna treatment might just be enough garlic in your regime tho...except, I've never had a whiff of that either.
laugh.gif
May the force be with you.....

Tracy I wish you well in your hair growing journey. I am quite sure that with all that was said, you will reach waistlength very soon. Happy Hair Growing!

Thanks. I think I'll stick to the ready made stuff. I wasn't aware they had unscented products! The last thing I want is to be walking around smelling like a Ceasar salad! I'm still recovering from the "Lisa smells like Oreos!!" incident in jr high after the first time I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lotion.
laugh.gif

Good luck with everything Tracy (dark brown color, scaled down product line and the stylist uptown)! I know you'll keep us posted on your progress, so we can all learn together

Tracy,
How is your hair changing back to brown from black? Are you aiding it in some way? If so, pleeease let me know.
Thanks,
Shell

At the beauty supply honey bunny.

I've even seen it at some drugstores (loval neighborhood ones tho - not like, Duane Reade).

Thanks pumpkin!

If my hair love did it, I'd have been there's YEARS ago. Hopefully some good sense and simplicity will bolster all the "love".

Thank you everyone, for your well wishes.

Is it the Queen Helene brand?

Congrats Tracy on getting back to a more favorable brown. My mom also used garlic shampoo on her hair, I never knew why though. I'm having my share of seasonal shedding over here, so the garlic shamp is worth a try. Thanks (as always) for the advice

I'm glad you're going back to your regular color, baby girl.

I just couldn't imagine you as Morticia Adams or Elvira!

Pebs -

Thank you. I'm gonna wait until after interview season, but I am indeed going to get my sunny look back.

Beana - I hope you like it. It gets the hair very clean - so if you are sensitive to "clarifying" type conditioners and your hair needs a moisturizing one, don't use it with every shampoo. Switch off with something else.

Jen - the brand is Nutrine.

It's in a green and white bottle.

TRacy.. I used the shampoo last night, and I really think it helped my situation dramatically. I took some notes about what i may have been doing wrong on past wash days and combined that with the new shamp and my shedding/breakage noticeably decreased.

Since the shamp has ALS, i made a point to focus on my scalp. but since this shamp lathers so well i eventually ended up havig it all over my hair. I massaged it in for 5 minutes and rinsed.. my hair felt very very clean, a lil too clean to so i followed with CON and everything was okay again.

Fast forward-------
My combout only gave me 50 or so shed hairs in comparison to the ghastly 150-200 i was loosing every wash on top of daily shedding of about 50 hairs
shocked.gif
(These last 2 weeks have been no fun)

My scalp actually feels more stimulated.. I'm adding this into my regime as a staple 1st lather shamp. I combed my hair today after airdrying in a wet wrap, and i only had about 5 or so strands in my comb. This is excellent, Thanks for the rec!!!

I have been checking into unscented garlic products, too. My hair doesn't shed excessivley, but I want to hang on to as much as possible. I've only seen the Queen Helene and Spanish Garden brands in my bss. The shampoo ingredients are too harsh for my hair (als, sles...), but I got the conditioner. They aren't unscented, though.
frown.gif
But they don't smell as strong as the Henna Queen Tratamiento de Ajo. Whoo-oo-wee! That stuff is pungent like a ****!
laugh.gif

But it goes on nice and slippery. I followed up with something loud to cover the smell (Nature's Gate Herbal Conditioner).

Tracy, have you ever used a BW lightener? Can I mix this with my Clairol color and a 20 volume developer to get a "boost?"
confused.gif

Sassy.. I had a lot of courage yesterday because i purcahsed the SCENTED shamp!!! It is definetely strong. I didn't buy the unscented version b/c it contains garlic "extract" and the scented has garlic oil (which for some reason i thought was more genuine).

The sometimes annoying overpowering scent of CON was welcomed yesterday! That took most of the garlicy smell out. I finished of with razac serum yesterday.. and that smells very perfumey..I dont smell any garlic on me today though.

Hi Tracy,
Glad to hear the color worked out ok. If you need any extra encouragement just call me out GF. I'm sure you can make much progress this year esp. with all of us here backing you up. The hardest part is beleiving you CAN do it you've got that down the other 50% is the constant care.
GL/GB.

Girl don't mess around mixing lightener, developer (which are for intents and purposes the same thing) and Clairol color (which has some (peroxide in it too) trying to approximate a booster!!!!
spank.gif

spank.gif

If you want to use a booster just buy the color you want to use (I'm assuming it doesn't come with a booster) and ALSO buy one of the colors that DOES come with a booster. I am almost positive that would also be cheaper than buying the color, the lightner AND the developer all separately.
smile.gif

Tracy, you are off the hook!
laugh.gif

But, what does a booster look like? Is it the same as a lightener? I'm just experimenting (not on my hair, just on old strands).
laugh.gif

Lucia, mamita, gracias.
wink.gif

I believe I can do it, I'm just getting frustrated sometimes. I'm trying to stay positive and tweak my regime with things I know might be holding me back. Protective styling (something I'm TERRIBLE at because my face looks like a MOON with my hair back
ohwell.gif
) is one of them. I'm trying to just suck it up and do it. If I can get over this huge hurdle (for me) I'm almost sure that I'll make some marked progress.

I also plan on trimming once a year (instead of two or three) because my ends are almost NEVER really split! Between Adrienne's infrequent trims, SG SHS admonitions. I plan on keeping more hair using this method as well in addition to the Prot. styles.

But I will holla. Trust!

BEANS!
grin.gif
Your instincts are correct - the scented is better because the oil is better than than the extract - I'm just a punk.
look.gif
laugh.gif
I'm REALLY glad it helped you!
smile.gif
It does have some harsh ingredients, but that garlic makes it worth at least a first shampoo, I agree....
