Ok, I have a bunch of questions about ayuverdic hair products. Do they work on everyone? I spotted this clip on youtube and I'm curious again about trying this ayuverdic thing one more time.

Here is the clip:

I seriously want to get my hair like this woman!!!

My experience with Amla oil

My first attempted to use amla oil as a pre-poo was a disaster. :ohwell:
The first time, I used it I simply poured the oil in my hand and applied on my scalp and hair. I slapped on a shower cap and sat under the dryer for 20 minutes. My hair turned out funky, and beyond tangled!!! :nono: I did the same with jasmine oil...it was a disaster as well.. Tangles like crazy.I concluded these oil should be used with eat.

Second attempt, I did the same thing but this time I apply my shower cap and slept with it over night. The result was the same tangles!!!

Finally, I applied the oil again but this time slept with a scarf on. Still tangles.

Not once did I " warm " the oil with my hands before applying and I didnt using any bhrami oil either. I dont know if that was my pitfall.

Does your ayuverdic regiment revert your relaxer???

I tried the sunsilk double amla with henna shampoo and conditioner and it reverted my relaxer completely in one wash!!! :spinning: At the time I was using phyto II and it reverted my relaxer completely.

I no longer use phyto, Im now on mizani Butter blend.

Help!!! Any advice. I would like to try the regiment showed in the clip but I dont want my relaxer to revert:nono:.

As a last result would just using coconut milk and coconut soap do the trick?:look:

Amla is high in Vitamin C so it is acidic. My personal experience with Amla products is that it will revert any hair processed or treated with alkaline products (relaxers, texturizer, rhassoul) Amla reverted my rhassoul clay "texturized" hair. Before the amla, my natural 4a/b hair was soft and manageable. After amla, like you, a tangled mess. My hair reacts the same to ACV rinses and Aphogee protein treatments. I now texturize my hair and the only way I will use amla is to tone down the red in my henna. Also, (I may be wrong) I don't believe the person in the video has processed hair.

You can use any oil your hair likes to do the Ayuverdic pre-poo method. It doesn't have to be an Ayuverdic oil. I read some where that Indian women will apply coconut oil or castor oil to their ends the night before a poo. Personally, my hair loves EVOO so that is what I use. I tried straight coconut oil and my ends felt brittle and dry the next morning. I also discovered I can use a 3 part liquid oil (EVOO, castor, jojoba) to a 1 part solid oil (coconut, shea) pre-poo and my hair loves it.

I did the same with jasmine oil...it was a disaster as well.

I once purchased Jasmine oil from an Indian store. I used it once then threw it away. The fact that the ingredients were not listed on the bottle should have stopped me from purchasing it. I believe the oil is mineral oil with jasmine scent mixed in it. My hair reacted to that oil just like it would to any hair product that contains petroleum (petrolatum, mineral oil) My hair gets very dull, dry and brittle if I use those types of products. I suspect your jasmine oil is the same.

I don't warm the oils in my hands either. The only time I warm an oil is to mix a solid with a liquid. I have used bhrami oil before and my hair likes it. But EVOO works just as well for me.

I've used straight coconut milk before and I didn't notice any great conditioning benefits. However, once I mixed EVOO in it I got a good DC. I don't recommend plain coconut soap for the hair or skin. Once the coconut oil saponifies (converts into soap) it becomes a harsh cleansing agent and it will dry out the skin and hair. However, a soap containing olive oil, palm oil and coconut oil is okay for the skin.

The person in the video used Brahmi (Thyme leaves) powder. Shikakai powder contains natural saponins (cleansing agents). Shikaki can also be used to wash delicate clothes. There's also Aritha powder also contains natural saponins. The Hesh company which sells the Brahmi powder also sells the Shikakai and Aritha powders. The person in the video chose to use Brahmi powder alone because it's good enough to clean her hair. I've used all of them and with my kinky hair texture I don't like applying the paste directly to my scalp because it's hard to rinse out. I instead make an infusion/tea with the powder then apply that to my scalp with a color applicator. I don't use these powders all of the time. I'm perfectly happy diluting moisturizing poo with spring water and massaging that into my scalp. What I use depends on my mood.

Don't give up! The person in the video gave very good advice. Keep it simple. Try one product at a time so you will know what works and what doesn't. I am a self-professed PJ and I've tried all sorts of Ayuverdic hair products. My hair likes some of these products and others it hates.

Good luck and HTH,
IvyS :yep:

thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions and giving me great advice!!! I'm also curious about shikakai oil. Is this good to moisturize hair?? Will it revert my relaxer too?I'm thinking of trying either the oil as a prepoo or just add it to a deep conditioner. I fear using a shikakai soap bar will revert the hair.

Hmmm... good question. :perplexed Unfortunately, I've only used Shikakai powder to cleanse my hair. I've never used the oil or shampoo bar. I tend to stay away from shampoo bars because of my hair texture. I tend to get too much cleanser in some areas and not enough in others. My recommendation is to test the oil or soap on one part of your hair to see if it reverts.

Hopefully some one else has a better answer.
