All of us know the context of these familiar words of Jesus: “And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her’ ” (Luke 10:41-42, NKJV).

We tend to get on Martha’s case about this, her being distracted and such. But the majority of us manage to get into the same boat. Martha’s heart was not to be distracted from the Lord. In fact, the verse that opens this passage states that she “welcomed Him into her house” (v. 38). She invited Him. She wanted fellowship. She was not at all intending to ignore the Lord. She wanted to serve Him.

Serving the Lord is a good thing, yet it was in Martha’s serving that she was distracted. What was she distracted from? True fellowship with Jesus. She had become “worried and troubled about many things.” Serving the Lord without having fellowship with Him does not lead to peace.

Notice what she said to Jesus: “ ‘Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me’ ” (v. 40). In other words, she was so busy serving the Lord that she assumed the answer to her concerns was more help to continue working.

More often than not, when we get overwhelmed, busy, stressed and under pressure, our immediate assumption—because it is all for “serving the Lord”—is “Lord, we need more help!” But Jesus very clearly told Martha that “one thing is needed,” and it was not more help to continue doing what she was doing. The one thing she needed was sitting at the feet of Jesus (i.e., fellowship) and hearing a word directly from Him.
Many times we get so busy doing things for the Lord that we don’t receive things from the Lord. Many times we get so busy serving the Lord that we forget to spend time hearing the Lord.

Serving the Lord is a good thing, but without spending quality time with Him and hearing His word, our perpetual state of serving may end up leading us toward worry, trouble and eventually burnout. Whenever we are overwhelmed or under pressure while serving the Lord, we need to sit at the feet of Jesus and receive something from Him.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank you for those that serve in your Church and I ask that you bring a spring of refreshing dew upon us and help us to continue on in the work that you have called us to do. Keep us focused on your plan for your Kingdom and help us as we work at home to take care of our families as well. Help us to balance our workload at church and at home, so that we don't get burned out. We need you because you are the only One that can give us peace and rest during those times we need it the most.

Thank you for your love!

In Jesus name...amen!

I was, but I'm not anymore. I was still serving in the ministry after my position was taken from me, but so many things happened, (personally and within the ministry) that I stepped down totally at the beginning of this year. I'm so conflicted....Please keep me in prayer. This is an excellent idea. Being in leadership is hard, but God has already provided what we need to be consistent and steadfast.

And that's ok to step down...doesn't mean you are NOT a leader anymore, just not where you were.

When you find yourself speaking with people on a daily basis: praying with them, sharing your heart, speaking God's word...you are still leading. You are blessed because you have answered the Call and God is not finished with you yet.

Thank you so much for sharing your heart. :love2:

Heavenly Father,

I thank you for my sister, crlsweetie912, and I ask that you continue to do what you have started in her. She heard your voice and answered the Call, yet we know that the road isn't easy and she needed to do what she needed to do at that time. Help her to know that its ok and that your Word still abides in her, every single day. Reveal to her your perfect plans for her, so that she will continue on and not become stagnant because of the past. Heal any hurts and bring her to a place of peace...your peace, which surpasses all understanding, it will guard her heart in Christ Jesus.

I pray this for her in Jesus name...Amen!

Love you, sis

Thanks so much N&W. That prayer touched my heart. I will continue to meditate on it and keep it in my heart. God Bless You!

Thank you N&W for posting. I'm not in a leadership position in my church (or any position for that matter) but this is great information for when I will be. Beautiful prayer also. I will take it and use it when it is my turn. :yep:

@Nice & Wavy,
I am just seeing this today. I am in 2 leadership positions at my church involving New Members and the Praise and Worship ministries. I also help out in the IT department from time to time. I love the passages you have posted above and would like to add one that has helped me many times.

1 Peter 5:8

(KJV)
8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Anytime we get out of balance, even while doing the work we have been called to, a door of opportunity is opened for the enemy. I have seen marriages crumble, children go astray, churches decimated not b/c a person was not following God's calling but b/c they were out of balance in their relationship w/ Him which caused everything else to disintegrate.
