I'm guessing they are, I just want to make sure.

I did the ballpoint pen method where I drew a line with the pen and I compared it to my hair, My hair is on the bottom, I think it's thinner...

Here is a picture of the pen I used.

So do I have fine hair strands? :look:

And what's my hair type? It looks pretty straight to me, is it type 1b? :lachen: That was a joke ya'll!!

its hard to tell..... pen tips are kind of thick so most hair would be fine in comparison

hope some1 has a better answer :)

My hair is fine but i've never tried to take a pic of it so I'm not sure. Fine hair is very small and very hard to see so I'm thinking it would barely even show in a pic. Maybe I'll take a pic of mine later just to see.

I've never heard of the pen test.

I Think your hair may be considered fine, I know I consider my hair super fine/silky. These are two pictures I took sometime in January, and as you can tell you can barely see the individual strands.

A few weeks ago however, I recently added a permanent blue-black color to my hair and you can definitely see my strands, you would have thought I had thick strands...but I do not [Ill come back and post a pic of my strands after coloring].

thanks ladies.
Ok cool, that would be awesome if you could take a pic Poka!
I read about the pen test and the thread test on here. But I don't know what kind of thread to use, my mom sews so maybe I'll do that when I get home.

I also read something about being able to see it in the light, but I don't remember exactly what that was.

wow, wow, that is a big difference!!!!!
interesting!

I've never heard of the pen test either. Hmm, now I'm curious. I think I may have to try this test just to see. I've always thought of myself as having a mix of medium and fine strands, with a few thick strands mixed in (so basically some of everything :lachen:).

sharifeh, never heard about the pen test, and without having a reference that we all know, like a penny so we can know the scale, it's hard to tell what it is we're looking at.

I take close-ups of my very fine hair but you'd think it was thick if you didn't know how magnified it was. I don't think people with fine hair have to wonder if they have fine hair, so you probably don't have fine hair. I think someone who knows you in real life can look at it and tell you. Asians do not have fine hair. Their is coarse. So maybe compare your hair with theirs? And depending on how much thinner your strands are, you could have neither fine nor coarse...or if your hair is so much skinnier than theirs, then you are probably fine.

Why do you ask? Fine hair has little weight unless it's long but even then it may not swing w/o product on it to give it weight. Plus hair strand sizes are within a RANGE meaning there's no point where fineness ends, then normal thickness starts, then another where coarseness starts. Most times you'll just know what kind of hair you have by how it behaves. Try products that others use and see if you get the results they get. When your hair is flat ironed does it behave like that of those who claim coarse or fine strands? I think we give ourselves headaches trying to put our hair into a box. Even after you find out that your hair is fine or normal thickness or coarse, it doesn't mean it will behave like that of someone with the same characteristics.

So don't lose sleep over knowing this. It may not be info that helps you much. You will know your hair when you pay attention to what it does, how it responds to things you do...not when you find out whose hair it resembles.

Nonie maybe you're right about having to wonder whether it's fine. i have extremely dense (thick) hair and i dont have to wonder for a second whether i have dense hair or not
the reason why i want to know is because people that are successful with their hair seem to be able to describe it so thoroughly. I cannot do that , I just know that my hair is super super thick, prone to splits, hard to deal with. I cant say type xyz, fine strands, porous or not etc etc and I feel like maybe I should know these things.

Thanks again nonie dear

@sharifeh, you don't have to know these things to get your hair. I'm sure if you ask someone who's never been on hair forums and who has a lovely long mane to describe their hair, they'd tell you the color, that it's soft or not, that it's easy to deal with or not. They wouldn't know the type, the texture, the porosity, etc. It's OK not to know any of these things.

When you start having issues and you post a question, someone will probably recognize the same issues they once had and help you fix them. They may then use terms you never use on your hair and you will then learn them. But don't bother your head with stuff that isn't that important at the end of the day. Learn the terms when they become relevant. For now, enjoy your hair.
