I notice a lot of natural/transitioning ladies using a flat iron to straighten their hair. I'm curious if anyone is using a pressing comb. If so, what kind of heat protectant are you using? How often are you pressing your hair? TIA.

i think pinkskates uses one and her hair is gorgeous :yep:
btw i dont use the hot comb only flat irons when i used heat

Hi Platinum...the ladies are right. I've been pressing my hair with a hot comb for almost a decade now. Feel free to check out my Fotki and Webzine. Once my webzine is finished (next month) I will have streaming videos on my webzine showing me pressing my hair.
And I will have lots of tips.

I'm natural, but I only press my hair a few times a year. I go to stylist and get it done. Although I haven't had my hair pressed since Sept 2007. I plan on investing in a flat iron and doing it myself. Although I have to say that I am a little concerned about not being able to get my roots as straight using the flat iron.

I know when I start using heat that I will use a pressing comb, perhaps with a flat iron combo. I know how to work the comb and get the heat right, I like the fact that I can control the heat. I have viewed PinkSkate's fokti and she offers excellent advice!!

I wonder if they have ceramic hot combs now? Or what's the best type of hot comb out there as for even heat distribution, nice back of comb etc... I shoud PM Pink Skates...

No. Not because I'm afraid or that I want to try it but because I don't want to. I prefer flat ironing

I use a hot comb (electric) to do my edges if I did a bad job with the flat iron. Usually I can flat iron and go.

I want to try it, but I'm the type of person who has... seasons, so if I straighten my hair once and like it, I'm gonna wanna do it again and again for the next... 2-3 months and then I'll find a different style and stop straightening. My only concern is losing my natural curls with a pressing comb, i've seen people whose hair is damaged (or as they call it 'trained') because of misuse of the hot comb and that scares me a little bit.

That's what they used to call it when I was young, they did that on purpose...funny but my hair was long so I guess the damage was that the shrinkage was lost but my mom thought that was a good thing...oh well we know differet these days.

Yes, there are ceramic pressing combs. I have one. It works O.K. I would suggest this for someone new to the pressing game.

i straighten less that once a year but when i do, i use a hot comb. i have a ceramic flat iron that i have never used yet though. next time i wanna straighten ill probably try it, but in my experience i like that you can get closer to the scalp with the hot comb.

Although I haven't straightened in a while, I use a hot comb to achieve the look. Okay, I don't use it but my mom presses my hair wth a comb. (Who woulda thought I'd be a grown a$$ woman sittin' in my mama's kitchen making sure my ears didn't get burned?) Flat ironing alone does nothing for me.

I use a pressing comb for my edges only. And actually, I haven't used it for my edges in about 3 months or so and my hair is is happy about that

dont trip.....your always a baby to your mamma.....:lachen:

When i was getting my hair flat ironed at the salon, i'd use the hot comb on my edges after sweating them out. I was scurred though at first (flashbacks with my mom and my ear lol) but it was ok. But i don't need to use it anymore since i got my miniglide, it gets all the nooks and crannies lol!:lachen:

No hot comb for me. I am not good with it. I burned my hair really bad a very long time ago. I have tried it since joining this forum, but I am just not comfortable with it. I would definitely go to a professional to have it done. I love the results from a hot comb. I love that after you do it for so your hair gets used to it and starts to get less puffy in humid weather.

Hello everyone,

My mother used to hot comb or press my hair when I was young, the process took at least five hours (I have very thick hair) and I lost a lot of hair in the process. When I grew older the thought of pressing my own hair scared me and I was also scared of having anyone else press my hair except my mother. However, I got excellent tips from Pink Skates and I am now back to pressing my hair again and on my own. I think Pink Skates is absolutely right when it comes to patience, products and technique. A light blow dry and then hot comb saved me a lot of time and so far I have had no problems with burnt hair. I used satin curlers if I want my hair curled as opposed to using a hot curler. My hair reverts quickly and when that happens I just braids my hair in big braids and it has a nice and wavy effect to it the next morning until my next wash which I now do every week. I expect that as my hair gets longer perhaps my hair will hang more and the poofiness will not be as obvious when my hair reverts. I also do not mind a little bit of revision since I don't like my hair too straight. I found that my hair in its natural state does best with heat or keeping it in braids or twists or else the ends start to get tangled and cut.

Best,
Almond Eyes

Thank you for sharing, Almond Eyes! Welcome to the forum! I agree Pinkskates does give excellent advice.

When it comes to the hot comb, I have NO skills.:nono: :lachen:
I tried it once, but I decided to just stick with the rollerset and flat iron. That's what works for me.
