And if you were approached would you do it? What would be your terms?
What is the average pay rate and scene like?

A lot of women on here have healthy, gorgeous and some even VIRGIN hair that should be right on those Dark & Lovely & Garnier commercials or the hair books that line the shelves in the Beauty Salon.

I was approached once while in college. This guy flagged me down and introduced himself and asked if my hair was real. I said yes and asked if i'd be into modeling for hair shows & stuff. I took his card and my friend who was working w/ me and saw the exchange said "Girl, I wouldn't do it because i heard they tear your hair up, wanting to put dye and weave and glue and extreme cuts in your hair."

So i threw the card away and didnt think much and later told someone else about and they said I missed a good side hustle. She said the other girl was probably just hating that he didn't ask her.

Hmmm, i could've had my face on the bottle of a Pantene Shampoo right now if i was lucky enough!

About 5 years ago, before I moved to Atlanta, I had visited my brother here and went to his shop to get my hair done. There was this other guy that worked at the shop with him and the guy gave me his card and asked if I would be interested in doing some hair modeling.

I was flattered that he gave me his card, but I already knew in my head that the answer would be "no". At that time my hair was all one length, no color in it and just plain boring (to me), so I knew they would want to experiment with all kinds of fun things with my hair.

If I were to take him up on his offer, I think I would just have to say no color nor cutting....(oh, that's pretty much the things they jump at doing, so they would probably have no use for me)......I have no idea about the pay scale for those types of things, but if anyone offered me anything, I'd probably be happy with it. That's until other people would start coming and offering; then I would have some basis on which jobs to take, decline, etc. But right off the bat, I wouldn't be selective b/c after all, I would be getting paid for just getting my hair done free!

Several times I was going to do a couple of hair shows but once they mentioned cutting my hair and coloring I had to say no. It takes too darn long to grow african american hair and I would not want to start from scratch with the hair growing process.

I would model for weaves. I have never worn one but if a stylist wanted to do a weave I would then definitely do it.

I do it.
Only did a couple shows, did the hair mags, some ads and dye boxes.
My terms - really didn't have much of an option, the pay rate was just X amount flat.
Won't do shows anymore though.

If you're working w/ an agency you wont' have much terms to negotiate. Just be sure who ever approaches you is legit. God luck!!

Before I left New York City in November, I was a model for Milky Way Hair, the sub-company of Shake-N-Go Hair. The marketing director of the company saw my Model Mayhem Portfolio and contacted me to model for them. It was a lot of fun and the shoots pay VERY WELL. I miss it. I have a six page spread in a hair magazine from my last shoot that just came out, but I can't find the mag at any store.

You can't negotiate your own terms unless you have an agent. If you do, the agent negotiates for you. Otherwise, you're paid a flat rate.

I don't know why that girl told you that they would mess up your hair! When you're a hair model, the company generally takes excellent care of your hair because your hair is representing their company and image. Sometimes, you have to sign contracts stating what you can and cannot do to your hair. I think she was hating, big time.

I had a hairdresser approach me to be a hair model because she was trying to cater to curly and biracial hair (her kids were mixed) but my ma wouldn't let me be a hair model... she doesn't want me to ruin my hair... just like she wouldn't by me a maxiglide for christmas!

I've been the test dummy for someone getting their cosmetology liscense. NEVER do you hear NEVER again!! I ended up a trimmed, gooked up, 1 eyebrow-plucked mess! :lachen: Anyway, I wouldn't be a hair model because I don't think they keep the care of your hair in mind. Maybe if they wanted to make mea track star (putting in a weave) or braids, I would do it.

Several times. One well known magazine pursued me for about 2 years. I just don't let anyone touch my hair so I wasn't interested.

I would agree. At first they might tweak your hair to get it into a style but after that they will maintain it. Anything drastic would be done with a weave. I was approached once before and was supposed to go to NY for some stuff but the man wanted to cut and perm my hair. He specialized in short cuts. I was transitioning at the time and told him I wouldn't be able to do it. Plus one of the stipulations was that you had to come to him to get your hair done like every 2 weeks so that he could maintain it. I wasn't trying to keep running back and forth to NY. 2 girls I know did though. The three of us he picked out of the photographer's portfolio. He was going to do our hair and there was a show and a photo shoot. If you did well, more work would come out of it. Not only hair but also skin, parts modeling (nail polish), makeup, etc. The pay was great though.

I don't think either one of them got called back for more work though. I did a photo shoot for a braids magazine a few summers ago. Hmm... now that I think about it, somebody from ATL has tried to contact me more than once on a modeling site about beauty modeling but I never got back up with the man. Maybe now that my hair is natural and healthy it might be worth a shot. :scratchch

Yes for many 3 natural hair care events in NYC. The stylist was also my hairdresser and I did a video obout styling natural hair and a couple of photos for Natural Hair Magazine. It does pay well and the stylist again was my own hair stylist and she needed someone so I went got my hair did and got paid at at the same time.

I don't know if I could do it. I mean I wouldn't want my hair cut or dyed. and I just don't put any kind of product on my hair. i like doing my OWN hair. i don't like anybody else doing except my sister and that is it. u know the answer for my might be no.:spinning:

That's a bit excessive, unless of course, they were giving you extra money for transportation.

That's what I said. They were comping our travel $$. I asked about that when he mentioned it. He said well at least it's driving distance. We live in Baltimore and there isn't a market here for modeling. Most people who want to pursue it move to NY or LA for that purpose. I wouldn't have minded it every once in a while but the every 2 weeks thing was going to be a pain. Just time wise. But he wanted to make sure the style was maintained.

I've done numerous hairshows and 2 photoshoots for mags. I didn't get paid, I was in high school and just so happy to be involved. I am currently featured in the window of the salon I go to in Philly, I forgot about that. Haven't been to the salon since July, I guess I'm still up:grin:
