Any naturals able to comb their dry hair?

I was wondering if there were any naturals who are able to comb their dry hair without a problem? I mean, as kids, our mothers combed our natural hair dry all the time. For many of us the time before we got a relaxer as kids was when our hair was its longest or at least as long as our relaxed hair. My mom combed my hair dry all the time, and when I got older, I combed my dry hair all the time. I didn't have a bunch of tangles and breakage either. She would braid my wet hair with grease and let it dry, and when she took the braids out my hair was moist, soft, and not that difficult to detangle. I am beginning to think it is the shake and go technique that is leading to all the tangles and breakage of detangling natural hair. Am I wrong?

i was juuuuust thinking about this. my hair was never hardly combed while wet as a child.

i've done it a few times. it wasn't that bad. and i see that a lot of people comb dry hair that's been oiled with no problems.

I am able to with a wide tooth comb, detangling lotion and patience. Also, I wouldn't do it on hair that was previously air dried. I still use that method that your mom as well as mine, used. My hair is always softest when I do this. I even do this to avoid using a blow dryer when I flat iron. Its possible but a lot of unnecessary work and potential for breaking off strrands.

I can't comb my hair wet, it hurts. I only comb my hair when its dry.I hardly comb my hair anyway. If i do i use a leave in.

If I detangle and moisturize well while it is wet, and finger comb a bit first, yes!! i can comb while its dry! I've actually been doing this more lately before washing.

I can but I'd rather not do it. I usually give my hair a light misting of leave-in conditioner or braid spray whenever I see the need to comb my hair when it's dry. The best possible scenario for combing is doing it after a good conditioner wash though IMO.

I haven't combed my hair dry unless I've blown it dry first. Since I'm trying to stay away from heat, I haven't done this in a while. I'm going to try rollersetting and sitting under my hood dryer, then combing to see what happens. I'm so tenderheaded, I'm terrified of the comb!! lol

I did that for a while (greasing while wet letting it dry and then dry combing) and while it seemed to be all good at first i progessively broke my hair off
I don't think its a good idea for naturals

Thats EXACTLY what I do. Otherwise, it gets pretty ugly!

Oh, yeah, I can comb my hair dry - sure thing. I'll have hundreds of tiny tiny ends of hair scattered everywhere from the breakage (even if I comb it out wet, put grease in it, braid it, and then comb it out AFTER I unbraid it) and my scalp would be throbbing and sore, but I could do it. I was always told I was 'tenderheaded' as a child, because my MOM's hair was easier to comb through dry rather than wet. My mother thought I was insane when she first saw me combing my wet hair - but at least I wasn't holding back tears. Combing my hair dry is the easy way to give myself a trim, basically.

I can dry comb my hair with a wide toothed comb, but it takes forever to comb all of my hair dry without getting the comb caught in the curls and tangles. It's so much easier and faster to comb it while damp or wet.

I can...

if I've JUST detangled my hair and it was twisted/braided right after. Otherwise, my strands start tangling toward the middle and ends immediately.

Even as a child, I only had my hair combed dry because I had a press, so I guess if my hair has been pressed/flat ironed (even lightly) I can comb dry. Otherwise, I don't think I can.

I think this is part of my problem so now i am only going to wash once a week and band my hair and put it in a bun for the next month

and when it is dry i can comb it a little but i fear it all falling out

Only after it's been flat-ironed. I rarely comb my hair wet as it is......just to detangle during the wash session and to part it in order to put it into braids and twists.

For me combing dry hair=breakage and a headache

I can, as long as it's a shower comb or a pick. I hold the hair, comb the ends and then work up to the roots. I do my mom and brother hair the same way.

Nope, I have naturally curly hair and i can get a comb through it. I dont think you are supposed to either, just leads to breakage

I used to dry comb when my hair was much shorter. I would use some leave in and water and would be absolutely fine. When my hair got a lil longer than that i did it right after co-washing my hair. Now i only do it wet, or before i shampoo i might dry comb my hair.

Its all relative depending on what works for each individual. Thats how may hair was done up until the age of 11 and it never broke off. In a matter of fact my hair was breaking off like crazy this past summer and in doing that my hair is more manageable and isn't breaking off like it was.

I can comb my hair dry using a wide tooth comb and doo gro triple strength detangler spray but I usually don't. I prefer detangling in the shower with conditioner then twisting it until its dry then I have no tangles.

By the way, I didn't know people weren't detangling when they did wash-n-go's...??? I guess my wash-n-go is more like a wash, detangle, twist, dry and untwist.. haha.

I can comb dry, but it has to have a detangler in it and a good moisturizer. It is a bit difficult for me,though. I think that since going back natural, my hair has been conditioned to be combed while wet mostly.

I could do it say if my hair was previously detangled, lubricated and stretched out in large knots or braids and i decided to recomb it a few days later. I would never attempt this if my hair airdried loose. In either case i'm not too much in the habit of dry combing and doing it wet is always easiest.

I rarely comb my hair except when it is flat-ironed. On the occasions that I do comb it, I use a k-cutter comb.

My natural hair is at least damp when I comb it. I really
don't like to see broken hairs in the sink or in my comb.
In general, I comb it when it is wet and full of conditioner.
So for me, dry combing is a no, no.

I used to dry-comb my hair all the time. I just figured all those tiny curls that fell off onto my shirt were a necessary sacrifice lol When I wasn't being lazy, I'd spray braid sheen in it, and that would help reduce hair on my shirt, but the comb would still be full of hair. Again, I figured that's just what had to happen. But now, I know better. Dry-combing may work for some people, but it's definitely not for me anymore.

HHG!

I comb my hair all the time after its blow dried and i have no problem i think its the conditioner you use and you just have to blow dry it good but my hair is soft when its wet and straight when i blow dry it and i have no perm what so ever in the summer time i'll be more than likely wearing my hair like that cause a curl will not last........
