I don't know much about steaming, but one of my friends, Faith, is wondering if this would be an okay way to steam her hair...

1. Put conditioner on hair...
2. Put on a plastic cap...
3. Blowdry plastic cap for 15 mins.

Does this sound okay? If not, what would you suggest?

Thanks in advance! :)

IMO that's a waste of heat. Tell your friend to get a microwave steam cap or aphrodite steam cap or one of those hot tools blowdryer attachments for heat treatments (I can't remember what it's called) but it's a gold colour.

What about just going into the bathroom and turning on the hot water? I accidentally "discovered" this method this winter when I'd have the shower running while I brushed my teeth and washed my face in order to warm it up in there before I took my clothes off. I'd moisturize, bun and put on my scarf beforehand. I truly believe my daily "steam treatments" helped keep my hair in good condition this winter.

It's funny. I actually use to do that a while back before I got my hair steamer. I don't know if it worked. I didn't care much for my hair back then. When I told my then hairdresser she told me, " I am better off using a warm towel wrapped around my head. that the heat from a hair dryer is different from a hair steamer"

yea it sounds like more heat than steam. BUT maybe if you were to place a soaking wet washrag underneath the showercap...maybe it would be more of a steaming effect and the heat wouldn't be as 'direct'..... just a suggestion.... :ohwell:

Last weekend I was in a funny kind of mood and I tried steaming my hair with my clothes (garment) steamer. My strands were soft, moisturized and totally conditioned. The results were amazing ... but my hands got a little tired after a while. Maybe I'll have to look into getting a legit hair steamer later this year.

Ok, so the idea of running your shower to steam your hair is great as you will get a good steam out of it. I suggest doing this while in the shower with conditioner in your hair and plastic cap on. I suggest doing this while in the shower because just running the shower (and not being in it) to steam your hair is a phenomenal waste of water and money as some people have to pay for water.

I think it's cheaper just to buy a tabletop steamer actually as they are cheaper than free standing.

Good point!:) I live in an apartment where I pay for heat and not water - hence turning on the water as opposed to turning up the thermostat to warm the place up. I also do this in the shower with my cap on but the issue with that is I can't bathe in scalding hot water so there is not as much steam. If your water is hot enough and your door shuts tightly you will be able to generate enough steam to make a difference, just as if you were in the bathroom under similar conditions with a perfect 'do, your curls would probably flop. At some point I may invest in a steamer, but right now this works because I can work it into my normal routine and not add an extra step to doing my hair.

ITA. In Barry Fletcher's book he stated if you don't have a steam machine , wrap a hot towel around your head and allow it to set for approx 15 mins.

I do this. It's wonderful. I put a damp towel in a lg. bowl and into the microwave. I rinse my hair, load it with conditioner, then wrap the hot towel around my hair. It's the only way my hair survives the winter.

ETA:
I sometimes do this with EVOO too.

Take your conditioners to the sauna and put it in your hair while you sit in the sauna. Cover up your hair with a plastic cap, or use one of those foil heating caps.

That's what I do... Place a hot, wet towel under the plastic cap and then sit under the dryer.

Why not sit under a hooded dryer with conditioner and a pastic cap that's better that using a hand held hair dryer(you can only get a section at a time).
