IT'S THE BLEEDING ENVIRONMENT!!!! I live in warm, humid Houston. My hair's ALWAYS dry. No matter how many times I DC, how many concoctions I add to my DC, how many times I moisturize (at least twice a day), my hair just soaks up all the moisture and becomes DRY & HARD.

I was going crazy. A lot of knowledgeable ladies on here told me I probably have porosity issues and I battled this for MONTHS. Frustrated when Porosity Control did nothing for me. But it all changed when I left Houston.

As I type this, I'm in Nigeria for a month vacation. This is day 5 and my hair has drastically changed! It's soo soft and moisturized, and STAYS moisturized. I don't even have to moisturize daily! Amazing! I now have hand in hair disease....i'm delirious with joy. Maybe I don't have porosity issues. Maybe it's just the stupid Houston weather sucking up all the moisture from my hair.

I say the CULPRIT IS THE ENVIRONMENT. Anyone agree? Has this happened to you before?

I would expect your hair to stay MORE humid in a humid environment, unless you are using a lot of humectants and your hair is dry.
Have you checked to see if you might have hard water? I'd suspect that could be a problem.....

Whats up Girl! I hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation. When you get back home, put a humidifier in your room.

Well I can see where you're coming from. The elements do matter.

I did training in NEw Mexico and it is dry up there. My hair was wrapped the entire time so I only noticed the differences in my skin.

Anywho--I was off my skin-care regimen. I couldn't exfoliate and didn't have half my skin care products; but curiously enough I never broke out.
Now--if I were here (in TEXAS) and off my regimen, I woulda been spotted up like a damn leopard.
I've only lived along the South (TX, LA, FL) so when you go 'up there' the differences in climate are noticeable.
My skrin was extremely dry (took weeks for my hands to not look so 'withered'). But my face?
Gorgeous complexion!

....it's so dry and windy and 'sand-y' up there, it felt like I was getting a daily microdermabrasion treatment.

Makes sense to me. Our hair wasn't created with North America in mind:nono:. Your hair is happy to be brought back to its natural habitat!

My boyfriend's dad is from Nigeria, and his mom (bf) told me that everytime they go there for their vacations in December, her hair grows like a weed. It's because of all the moisture there. I can't wait to go to see how mine grows

I have actually heard the opposite about women's hair in Houston.

Could it be a difference in the water? (perhaps harder water in Houston?)

Hard water comes to mind first thing from reading your post, not the weather...

wow....i can totally relate...i went back home to Nigeria for 11 days last Oct and my hair remained moisturised and grew like weeds. yes the climate is humid but i think its a different kind of heat/humidity...i say this bcos in the fall of 2006, i went on a 3-day cruise to Jamaica and i ended up with sunburn really bad on my face....now i spent 11 days in Nigeria last fall, i ended up with a nice even tan...no sunburn (did not use sunscreen). by day 2, i actually stopped using lotion....i could never do that here or else ill end up with ashy skin:lachen::lachen::lachen:. wonderwoman i am soooooooooooooooooooooooo jelly right now...u get to stay there a whole month? just be prepared for the change u r gonna encounter...if u suffer from allergies...kiss it goodbye until u come back to the states:grin:, ur skin will glow, ull even be so regular...sorry TMI with all the fresh fruits and food...hardly any presevatives/chemicals...and most of all ur hair will grow like wild weeds:yep::yep::yep: Enjoy ur vacation!

ETA: oh and if u braid ur hair with extensions, use Expressions and be sure to buy some to bring back with ya....so cheap, the longest synthetic hair i have ever seen and looks really good.lol

I live in H town and I have felt the air suck the moisture out of my hair while simply walking, it doesn't take long either. It was the dry hair syndrome which led me to this site searching for answers. I have a water filter so I've addressed the hard water issue.

I think with all the chemical plants surrounding the city we are probably getting a double dose of somethin' or other.

Enjoy your stay in Nigeria....:yep:

Oh yeah! The heat here is unbelieveable. I've been wanting to scream all day!!! But I love it all!

Ladies, I DO HAVE HARD WATER!!!!! But even when I got a filter, my hair remained dry after constant moisturizing.

The weather here is hot & humid but I swear it's different from Houston. My hair is thriving here. So soft! It's as if my strands have woken up & plumped out with joy for being home. I just tie a silk ribbon around my head and let my hair poof out in all its thick, glorious, SOFT richness. :lachen:

I LOVE THIS! I might even extend my trip :look:

@ GYMFREAK, Hey big sis!!!!!

wonderwoman, maybe that was the problem...you had to much moisture in your hair not to mention you was moisturizing it.

I had too much moisture so my hair stopped retaining moisture? I don't think that was the problem. I didn't always moisturize my hair that often. In fact, at one point I never moisturized daily. I've been battling this dryness since it came to my attention, which was a year ago. Ever since I've been steadily increasing my moisturizing to battle the dryness.

I've tried - porosity control, clarifying when possible to make DC more effective, DC overnight, DCing with warm oils, protein+moisturizing DCs.....EVERYTHING.

Another reason I think it's the weather is whenever I walk around with my scarf all day(inside or outside my house) and take the scarf off, my hair feels moisturized. But within minutes of exposure, my hair becomes dry and hard. I tell you, that weather was slaying my crown of glory...

Ok, i'm starting to sound like a vain ninny.

Is the air polluted? Do you guys get smog? If so, that could be the culprit.

LOL ... Wow ... I guess my hair is a total opposite to yours.

My hair LOVES the humidity of Houston. When I went to Nigeria, my hair hated the dry heat and sufferred.:perplexed But then again, I went to Nigeria during a time of bad hair care (mineral oil usage, etc.).
