Am I setting myself up for disaster with this regimen

I have not used a comb or brush for detangling for about two weeks now...only my fingers and I plan on doing this until my first progress pic when I flat iron my hair in early/mid July.
I do two oil rinses per week and DC after EVERY wash and plait my hair while damp to wear under my wig.
I have been transitioning since January of this year.
Is this possible to do safely?

It depends on your texture and the products that you use to dry your hair. Some of us have hair that is suseptible to matting, and wrapping around strands while we stretch. It took me a long time to realize that once I pass weeks 10-12, it is time to switch from my normal rollersetting to actually straightening my roots with a flat iron instead. And then the no-combing regimen works better that way.

If you are on a no-heat, low-manip regimen, then maybe as your roots get bushier, you should airdry in smaller sections. Keep a close eye on it, and you will make the necessary changes as you see fit.

IMO, if you're transitioning, not combing/detangling may cause breakage. You need to make sure you're baby-ing the demarcation line and if you're not combing it, you leave chance for possible matting/breakage. I've never understood the whole no combing reg:perplexed

I'm just worried because if I detangle in the shower while my hair is wet, I think I may still get a lot of breakage as my hair and demarcarion line will be weaker due to being wet.
I don't have much joy detangling dry either.:wallbash:

actually detangling in the shower is much better. Do it in sections and just take your time. Load up your hair with conditioner, section off, while under the water start to detangle first with a wide tooth comb and then with a denman brush (if you have once).

Thanx JLove74
(Think I better buy a denman brush)

That would have meant disaster for me when I was transitioning. My hair would have been matted up like crazy. But that doesn't mean it won't work for you. How often are you finger combing and under what conditions? Does your hair seem terribly knotted when you do it? As corny as it sounds, let your hair tell you if it can tolerate this.

Since you are transitioning, depending on your hair type, the new growth could become matted and tangled with the relaxed parts. I know you said you were finger combing, but I don't know if that would release all of your shed hairs (the cause of matting and tangling). Four months is an aweful long time not to detangle. For me, that would mean disaster.

I'm only fingercombing:
Before I put my hair in small box plaits
After I take my hair out of box plaits
In the shower

And I plait my hair twice a week.

Pinned up braid up as of this morning:

Didn't feel too tangled to me!?

I see what your saying.
Considering we shed apparently 100 hairs a day... and I hardly see any... :nono:
I think I better bring back out the combs :look:. I don't want my hair to be a matted mess.

My hair is 4z and I was able to stretch successfully by before washing section hair into four with fingers and pin each out of the way and wash each separately. With condition in each detangle with shower comb. This way it is much easier to manage. That is what works for me. Doing the whole head one time is asking for trouble.

Good Luck

Fingercombing didn't work too long for me while I was stretching. It led to some bad tangling, not at first, but after several weeks. Allandra suggested I detangle in the shower everytime I c/o wash and that's helped tremendously. A Jilbere shower comb will be a lifesaver!

How long did you stretch for?

Girl,
that's exactly my problem. I m 4 and a half post relaxer and i use the no comb method :wallbash::wallbash: and it is so hard to detangle it even on the shower that's why since a week i m looking for a good detangling conditioner with no cones . If i don't find any good detangler i ll be obliged to detangle it more often than twice a week

i detangle in the shower all the time and nevr get breakage. i actually think the shower is the best place to detangle. im transitioning too and im on month 7. so far so good. and IMO wet braids under a wig seems like a no no

Don't worry, my hair has already air dried by the time I wear the wig.
