after checking out different fotki's and member's routines, i've started "buttering up" my hair nightly. (focusing on the ends - which i've been wrapping in baggy - i put on a homemade butter mix (cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil & water), shea oil, NTM leave-in and some nat'l shea butter.) But, really i have no idea what i'm doing! Or what this whole idea of buttering up is supposed to accomplish? all i'm left with is hair with an oily surface. yes, it feels a little softer to the touch, but i still have spots on my head that look dry and coarse. i'm really confused and i hope someone can clarify what all this is supposed to accomplish. honestly, my hair lacks style (still rockin' that 'matronly bun' my mom was complaining about) its just an oiled bun. And, i'm not really noticing any length attainment (i am, however, noticing zits on my face - so maybe easing up on the oil isn't a bad idea.) my GOAL is to grow past the length i've been stuck at for the last 3 years - which means getting it from about 2 inches above bra strap to 5 inches below the top of my bra strap. What ELSE do i need to be doing? HELP!!!!

Moisturizing your ends will prevent them from drying out, when your ends are moisturized you hair stands a greater chance of growing, moisturizing your roots will help a great deal also. Your probably using a bit too much of the "butters" and its not really necessary to use the butters either, but its good for moisturizing your ends. I'd suggest using them only when needed and not everyday, also use something thats not too heavy on your hair and roots, by doing this it should eliminate the dryness your experiencing. HtH~

butters r like oil in my opinion...what u r doin with them is sealin the moisture into ur ends...that same if u were puttin only the coconut oil on there
