I've been doing some investigating on the internet recently. I've been trying to figure out how to stop my obsessive product junky behavior. I've read in several websites that all you need to use to obtain healthy long hair is a good shampoo, conditioner and oil, nothing else. I've been using the three on my daughter's hair and so far everything is great! Her hair is much softer, and easier to detangle. Since I'm in braids now, I'd like to know if anyone else that is 4 a/b is having good results without using all of the "other" stuff that we feel we can't live without. I think I may try this for about 2 months after I remove my braids. Any responses will be appreciated! Thanks Ladies!

I just discovered this myself. I ONLY use shampoo, conditioner and oil. I even use my conditioner as a leave in. I just felt like I was wasting my time and money putting all kinds of junk in my hair. Plus, when I used to get my hair pressed in the salon, all the stylist used was shampoo and conditioner, no products whatsoever, and my hair smelled good and was light as a feather.

Was it the TLHS site with those ladies with past knee length hair??? I saw where it said all your hair needs is shampoo, condition, and oil and I read the whole entire site! LOL! I would have to agree but for some reason, oils sometimes works on my hair and sometimes it doesn't. So I have to use shampoo, conditioner, and S CURL!!! :D

Thanks for you response! I also remember getting my hair flat ironed and they used nothing but a small amount of oil. My hair stayed light and it didn't feel dry at all. I feel like I'm wasting my time with all of the products. Nothing works, and if they work good in the beginning, it's like my hair becomes immune and I have to buy something else.

My hair's condition and my hair stress level have done a 360 since I have minimized.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I do own other stuff, but I really only shampoo, deep conditioner and use a concoction of silicon oils and hemp seed oil to blow dry and flatiron. It has taken some time, but I have my favorite shampoos and conditioner that I stick with, as well.

I have not been oiling my scalp since I wash every few days.

Easy as pie and my hair really feels and looks better since I stopped using my grease, gels, leave-ins, growth aids, weaves, braids, etc. A big weight has been lifted from my wallet, as well.
:)

sometimes less, I only use shampoo now to clarify I just stick to CW, deep con treats, MTG w/oils and scurl-that's it.

I think I did read about that on TLHS. I've been looking online for about a week now, I've been to so many sites I can't remember. It seems like everyone is starting to go with the more simple routine for hair care.

I don't use much on my hair either, I don't dig the band wagon-jumping at all.
My hair does just fine with shampoo and conditioner and something for moisture when I get out of the shower (what I use depends on how I wear it- if I leave it in a pony tail I just rub some conditioner with Proclaim oil distribute and tie it up. If it's straight, then Silken Child Silkening Creme for the press.)
If my hair can't do what I want it to do with a small amount of product, then it's not supposed to be worn like that in the first place. All those extra products are just trying to force the hair to be something it's not.

I agree wholeheartedly with this type of regimen.

I've always been a minimalist, and I think this product routine works for natural hair as well as relaxed. I'm pleased with the health and appearance of my hair when I use very few products.

I'd just add a pair of scissors to that list for the (infrequent) trim.

When I get blowouts, all they use is shampoo, conditioner, and shine serum. No oil, unless you ask for it. The stylist told me too much oil weighs the hair down and it doesn't always wash out so easily. So lately, I've just been putting jojoba and/or coconut oil in my hair, and it's still light as a feather, but it feels so much softer than usual, especially the nape...it NEVER felt this good.

Now, I haven't tried this when co-washing/styling myself, so that will be the real test.

But you just might be onto something...

Your hair is really beautiful! I'm starting to feel a lot better about switching to the basics. I'm a huge product junkie! It's putting a dent in my wallet, it needs to stop now!

I agree. :) I love to do my dusting every now and then.

MsBrown, does your coconut oil smell like coconut? I LOVE my hemp seed oil, but I would love to try something that has a nice scent to it.

Also is your coconut oil creamy-like or like regular oil? The person that I buy my oils from has the liquid kind of coconut oil.

It has a light coconut smell. I can usually smell it when I first put it on. My husband has never mentioned me smelling like coconut when I go to bed, so the smell must not last too long. Or maybe he's just used to me smelling like "something". I got "suckered" into the deal at Puritan's Pride...buy 2, get 3 free, so I have more coconut oil than I know what to do with...but I love it, so I don't mind. It comes in solid form, but literally melts on contact.

ITA on the less is more--only thing to consider though is that relaxed hair tends to need supplemental protein and some kind of moisturizer . . . as well as the shampoo, conditioner, oil. If your hair is chemically treated, it may take a bit more work to keep it in shape.:)

I am finally realizing this... and now that I think about it, an aquantance of mines that has brastrap length hair (uses affirm no-lye) has been following this simple routine, I actaully noticed that she was using regular no-name brand hair products that you can find at walmart and such places (equate brand) to wash and condition her hair.

Besides, I was recently out of town for a few days and forgot some of my hair products and had to think of a way to keep my hair moist, I ended up using a leave in conditioner because it was all I could find... the bottom line is that you don't need all of these products to keep your hair in good shape . sorry if I'm rambling (I love to talk about hair, especially when I want to relax). ;)

Amen to that!

I believe it....if I wasn't such a PJ, that's probably all I'd have. Think about it, what did our parents do to/use in our hair has children? I know I had a headful of long hair as a kid with my mom using just the basics.

Sigh....yep. At least with sites like these, the next generations of little ones will grow up fully armed and will have a better fighting chance, lol!

i would even push to say that if i was not growing my hair fast and had reached my goal my hair would thrive on just conditioner and aloe vera gel if i m doing twists or conditioner and oil yep i could even live just on conditioner alone and my natural head:D of course once i reach my goal right now its ultimate grow for a year so i need all the stuff i can get known to grow hair :lachen:

Personally I live off of conditioner and oil be it avocado, or coconut...preferably coconut! Conditioner is used for my washes, my leave in, daily moisturizer, my baby daddy...

I have two styling products, KCCC (kinky curly curling custard) and a heat protectant serum when I blow dry or flat iron.

Thank you for all of the replies ladies!

It's kind of hard to stick to the basics when you have many excuses why you need the products that you buy. I just tried to purge my products and get rid of stuff that I feel that I don't need and it was hard. I have my serums, heat protectors, oil moisturizers and the list goes on.......I feel like I may need them one day. Oil is supposed to be moisturizing and some are supposed to be able to protect your hair during heat styling, but I can't seem to find it in myself to throw them away! I know a lot of women who have beautiful hair and all they use are the basics, but I just can't seem to let the "others" go.

Dylla, you are one of my new inspirations! Your hair is beautiful!

I am like that, too. I did do some spring cleaning a few weeks ago and wiped out a LOT of crap, but now my problem is the number of different shampoos and conditioners, I own. I only really use my NTM and Kenra Platinum and Keraphix, but I have sets from about 5 or 6 different brands. :ohwell: I have challenged myself to just use them and not buy anything else until they are gone!! (except my NTM Daily Deep Conditioner - I can't live w/o that one!) It will take months!

Soooo true! :lachen: I was thinking of ways to streamline my products but I ended up throwing away nothing:lol: I kept thinking-- what do I use when I have a porosity problem...what do I use when my hair desperately needs protein...what do I use when I need this really slicked down or I want to jazz up my color....what do I use when its humid and these curls are about to take a beating:lol: Regular Shampoo, conditioner, and oil can't help all that:lol: Throwing away the "specialty products" is gonna be hard...specially when they helped me get out of my shoulderlength growing rut. Lawd, I need help.:ohwell: :lachen:
