African American Salon Vs. Dominican Salon

I've only been to one AA stylist, but she was in the process of moving to another state. So I only got my hair done by her once. But she really help me out and squeezed me in her schedule when I took out my braids and my hair feel out so badly. This is prior to LHCF. She told me to keep my styling simple and my hair will eventually turn around...and it sure has.

I've heard too many bad things about AA salons, so I never gave them a chance. I walked into one and looked at their price ranges, and I was floored.

I did my own hair until HS (my hair was really jacked up). I started going to DS. My hair didnt thrive at first, because of the massive use of heat. But I learned that you have to speak up.

Sometimes I would find a great DS and few months later they close without notice. On to the next one. Right now, I have two salons that I love! They are friendly, actually can see my progress (next month is a year, yay), don't mind if I bring my own products, and my pockets can afford them. They don't tell me I need a relaxer when I'm two months post, I explain why and they respect my choice.

And I love when they dust my hair, yes I love my blunt ends!

There are good and bad AA salons and DS. Go by word of mouth. Ask a woman on the street with that flowing hair you love, "where'd you get your hair done?". You have to research stylist like you research hair products.

I think it depends more on the individual stylist then their ethnicity. I have heard of great stylist who are black and into haircare too. Not every dominican stylist is into hair health and not every black stylist is into high heat styling, and grease. Finding a good stylist is hard.

My hair thrived when I used Dominican salons. I guess I am one of the exceptions. My hair loves heat. It loves to be strait. I'll attempt another heat session when summer is over.:ohwell: My straitening skills stink.:nono:

I've never been to an AA salon...They seem to not even exist where im at...where they at in NYC?

All I see are foreign ones, and blacks would be African or Carribbean

There are a number of AA salons in NYC and Brooklyn. Some well-known ones too.

They are FEW and far in between but that's something my mom always complains about! She has short hair and feels like Dominican salons can't really do anything for her since they mostly focus on SL+ hair.

I will say though the majority of them are in Harlem I can only really think on one in the Bronx!
