Hello All,

I have recently been having a lot of trouble with my thyroid. 1st very overactive now it's underactive.I have been on a boatload of meds. Because of this my hair has thinned out a great deal. At one point it was coming out in big handfuls. All my hard work down the drain!!! I got a hair cut to try to combat the thinning but what do I do now?

Has anyone been through this and what natrual alternatives are there to help with the hair loss. I have read up one evening promise oil and kelp. Is there anything else I can take or do?????????

TIA

I had hyper active thyroid a few years ago which cause my hair to fall out in clumps. I would often wake up and just see small bald patches of hair. I found I had to change my medication and once i did the hair grew back in no time. The doctor recommending massaging the bald spot a little each day. I dunno if it helped but the bald spots went away. I finnally got an operation on my thyriod in 2001 and i feel much better and I no longer experience the balding.

Thanks for your respones glossyxlipz!!!!! When I was hyper it did not effect my hair! I will try the massages.

I am hypo and too have gone the spectrum in my meds. I did not lose hair in clumps but I do lose quite a number of strands eveyday. My hair has thinned out quite a lot over the years. I have now gotten my meds to where I feel pretty good most of the time but I still lose a number of strands everyday. I use a lot of evoo in just about evey product I use. That seems to have helped me a lot.
Good luck to you both.

I had a friend who was suffering from a similar problem with her thyroid. She started taking 1,000 mg of evening primrose oil and 1,000 of flax seed oil daily. She swears that this helped her and tells anyone with the same problem to try that. Just a warning she swears the evening primrose made her breasts bigger. :look:

Did she want bigger breast? I took both for a while can't say I noticed any changes in my breast size as opposed to just gaining more weight. I stopped taking my meds becasue they did not seem to be helping and took the epo and flax and a couple of other vitamins for a few months or so. I found that they were more expensive each month than my meds. I have now found a dosage that agrees with me and I don't feel so complled to just sit on the couch most days. I still take 1 flax cap along with a multi vit daily. Will have to see if my hair stops shedding as much. I must say I realized I had a problem with shedding hair on one of my many visits to my specialist I noticed a poster that showed thyroid syptoms. The one I noticed was the eyebrows-mine looked just like the poster  I had little or no hair on the outside of my eyebrow! I knew then it was serious. The only advantage to that is not having to pluck and I could not remember the last time I did pluck my eyebrows? :ohwell: Will have to see how the new meds do on the shedding issue.

God Favor I know supplements can be expensive. I'm always like  when I come outta the Vitamin Shoppe. Nope my friend wasn't looking to increase her breast size, just looking for some help with her hair related, thyroid problem. I want to suggest MSM too for the shedding but I don't know if that will interact with the thyroid meds you are already on. Might be worth looking into? HTH

Simplycee( BTW your hair is the BOMB!!!!), I went to the health food store today and the lady in there raved about the evening primrose oil for my condition so, I am going to start 1000 mg daily. I think I will start going to wal-mart ( to save money)for supplement I remember seeing on 20/20 its all the same thing with different labels!!!!

Hey God-favor:)

Im so sorry to hear about your thyroid :(problem and as soon as I read your post I reached for my book by Nicole Elizabeth because there is a chapter in it all about thyroid and how it affects the hair. Anyway here are some of the ways to keep the thyroid under control if you are taking medication.

1. Get your thyroid levels under control.
Internal and external factors can cause the body's need for thyroid hormone to fluctuate. If you experience any of the symptons for hyperthyroidism, including persistent hair loss, your dosage may be too high or too low. Talk with your doctor if you aren't feeling well or if your symptoms return.

2. Consider T3. Synthetic thyroid hormones are primarily T4 (thyroxine). However, some patients do better on a combination of T4 and T3 (triidothyronine). Ask your doctor if supplementing with T3 could be right for oyu.

3. Take 2000-3000 mg evening primrose oil daily. Evening primrose oil is rich in GLA, which the body converts to hormones called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins act similar to thyroid hormones and supplementation of GLA can help ease your symptoms.

4. Get a haircut. If your hair loss is severe, get a haircut, and keep it trimmed to stay at that length. Your hair will fill out as new hair grows in and catches up with the older hair. Try thicknening shampoos like Thicker, Fuller Hair, to swell hair strands and make your mane look fuller.

5. Learn to deal wiht stress. The body's need for thyroid hormone can be affected by stress. Learn stress management techniques including deep breathing, meditation and prayer.

6. Eat a well balanced, healthy diet. Avoid dieting and therefore stressing your body until your thyorid hormone levels are under control. As your levels stabilize, your metabolism will speed up, and you will lose weight.

I hope you will better soon and your hair will be back on track. Im sorry I don't have anymore more natural alternatives to suggest.
