Ok, when rollersetting, i understand that the hair is wet...but do you actually have to comb your wet hair to roll? i know that that sounds so dumb, but i just need to clarify  :look: :look:

Doesn't this increase breakage? i'm v. scared of messing with my hair in such a fragile state!!

dont have a dryer, so i will be either using my hand held dryer on cold, or just airdrying in rollers...which rollers are best?

Also do you roll upwrds, or under ?

I do believe there are several ladies who rollerset without the need to comb. For me, I would detangle in the shower with PLENTY of conditioner, this way when I got ready to set my hair, it was easier to handle.

hmmm good idea!

I think you can get those rollers from Annie over there in the UK, they are mesh rollers that look like Magnetic Rollers..

I used one pack of them on my attempt last week and those sections turned out fantastic because of all the vent holes...

Hey gurlie;)

I like to comb while I set to get the straightest hair but thats just me. I also have a little rollersetting tutorial in my blog.

...Excuse the poor formatting, its was a "free" blog:cool:

Me too. I can't imagine rollersetting my hair without combing it.

I detangle first with a wide tooth comb, section my hair and then comb the section I am about to roll straight up in the air with a thin tooth (rattail comb). You have to be very gentle with it. I could never set my hair without combing it section by section, this is so that it lays flat and taught on the roller which means theres less chance of it coming out frizzy. I roll under. If your hair air drys straight loose, then it should be pretty straight with rollers, so you may not need the heat, but the cool air from the dryer does help it to come out a bit smoother. Look in my albums for pics of rollers/sets, I use the magnetic ones with the cover but I normally uses silver clips or hair pins to secure it. you can get them in the uk, they are made by annie

I do the same.

aahhh you ladies are the best :D :D . i guess at the end of the day is worth it rather than blowdrying and stuff.i'm definately gonna do this for special occasions so then it wont be as bad combing esp. If its just a one off thing....

Is there alot of hair lost during rollersetting?..i'm thinking that salerm 21 and keracare prods will give me the silkyest rollerset. my hair naturally dries very curly and thick. so combing will definately have to be done.

When i used no lye, i didnt loose much hair, but now that i use lye, it sheds a bit more than before. However, it is no way near as much as blow drying, and once its dry, it doesnt shed until its due to be washed, whereas with blow drying, hair would be everywhere and i would experience breakage. Rollersetting doesnt break my hair unless I'm not being patient with the combing process.

I LOVE Salerm for my rollersets! I couldn't imagine doing a rollerset without it. It leaves my hair bouncy and full!

Man....I've just learned that I am very hard on my hair. I detangle with a rattail comb and comb each section w/ the same comb while setting it. I might try detangling w/ a wide tooth. I am now trying the Infusium 23 moisturizing leave in and it detangles really well.

What?!! I have to comb it before I put on the roller, if not then it would dry a tangled mess and that would cause even more breakage! Usually my hair is slippery when it's wet and I barely get any hair in the comb when I'm done the set. I also use a fine toothed comb and detangle with a wide toothed comb before starting the set. hth

I just did my first rollerset using Macherie's technique, and although it wasn't perfect, my hair was straight and soft. During the comb out process while my hair was still wet, there was some sheding, but not nearly as much as it would be if I were blow drying. I've also noticed that this week my hair has stayed softer and shed less. I didn't think I could ever part with my beloved blow dryer, but alas, I think our affair is over...

Thats exactly how I feel :D

I do comb my hair hair to rollerset, when it is sopping wet. My hair doesn't really break when it's wet enough and I take my time. I also use bone combs to rollerset, not plastic ones anymore. I use my shower comb to detangle, and to section off the hair into three vertical sections for the rollers. I use the tail of my shower comb to part for each roller. I comb through each section to be rolled very gently detangling from the ends to the roots. I also keep a spray bottle of water and my Paul Mitchell detangler nearby.

I use magnetic rollers, and I roll under. I know that at dominican salons the sometimes roll girls with really long hair (like urs :) ) upwards. My roommate in college had her hair set this way (she is dominican, with waist length 3a/b hair). She said her hair dried fast being rolled upwards rather than down. They set her hair on 3 inch black magnetic rollers I think.
