I love coconut oil! And I don't trim my ends every 12 weeks either, but I also don't assume that what works for me works for someone else.

All I know is when I use coconut oil, my hair is soft, shiny and moisturized for at least 3 days. Last I heard, coconut oil is one of the few oils that can actually moisturize your hair. I don't use castor oil on my strands so I can't speak for that one.

Is like to see her give some East Indian, Dominican or AFRICAN woman who use coconut/castor oil as a staple that speech. Of course it's not good to use too much but too much of any one thing can be bad for you... Too much water can cause over hydration, too many vitamins can have negative effects, shoot too much grapes seed oil can cause the hair to look flat and limp and it will not be absorbed. I agree on some things she wrote but not everything. Mainly about the coconut/castor oil....

I think she is just responding to what she is seeing show up in her chair. This wouldn't be someone who knows their hair. This is someone who got hand me down information and tried to do it and it didn't work.

If you need a trim, your edges can feel rough and make the rest of the hair feel dry.

And if you use too much oil it doesn't help your hair.

And yes if your hair needs some water, oil isn't going to help.

Are delivery wasn't great but I don't think she is saying much more than that.

Some people can use coconut oil and others can't.

Her delivery isn't great but her advice probably does help those that sit in her chair.

My Stylist (before coming to LHCF) had "Her" Opinion(s) and that's exactly what they were: "Her Opinions"

Now that I am here, (knowing what I now know about "Healthy Hair Care Practices) I notice most of the stuff she was saying was totally unfounded, and were based on her 'limited' knowledge and to keep regular customers in her chair.

This particular stylist seems to do a lot of YouTube/blog/Instagram "hair guru" hair so I always see her posts popping up on my feed. I don't follow her personally, but most of the time I think the hair pictures she posts look nice.

One of her earlier posts was about how a trim IS a hair cut and even if she cuts only .25 of an inch the price is still the same so I thought her posting about needing trims every 12 weeks was an interesting tactic.

But I agree with faithVA, she's going off of what she sees daily. Probably in her chair and online as well, with the LOC method and people really getting into sharing what they use on their hair daily.

I wonder if some of the ladies showing up with heavily oiled hair are trying to protect themselves from a harsh shampoo job?

I agree with her. I don't think natural hair needs all of those heavy thick products people use. It took me awhile to figure this out but my natural hair didn't start feeling hydrated until I stopped using a bunch of heavy greasy products and started using a light oil. I condition when my hair feels dry and when my ends won't retain moisture I trim.

I am just learning this from my own stylist and the health of my hair is improving because of it. I'm not natural, but I have very thick, porous relaxed hair, and I used to use a lot of product to keep my hair "moisturized." Because of this, I experienced lots of matting and stuck-together strands from product build up. My hair stylist taught me that if I have a shampoo and conditioner that's actually working for my hair, my hair can go 3-4 days, sometimes more, without me needing to drench my hair in water, leave in, and oil. Now I just use a dime to quarter sized amount of leave in and an absorbent, ceramide-rich oil blend every 2-3 days and my hair is moisturized but still light and detangled :yep:. I really like the idea that if our hair is truly moisturized, it will only need slight touch ups throughout the week instead of heavy-duty product use every day.

I don't agree with the 12 week trim, but definitely want to agree with the greasy hair. I am over greasy hair, but need to figure out what next.

I use a lot of oils because of my tighter texture. It adds lubricity to the strands of my hair that are going to tangle no matter what I do because of the nature of my kinky hair.

The only way around it is to efficiently stretch my hair (with heat) since most other methods don't get the job done.

When my hair is stretched and well conditioned, my hair doesn't need much moisturizer at all to the point it is shocking.

I may go back to that. In fact, I think I will :drunk:.
