I recently visited the bobsa.org site and was a little hesitant to post this idea...but then I realized all of us want the same thing: To have healthy hair and to help one another achieve it. With so many of us on here, Im surprised there aren't more black owned beauty supply stores...Maybe that should be a challenge for us. We agree to spend a year or two trying to get a business up and going in our own cities. That would be amazing. Just a thought I had. And to be perfectly honest with you, the idea of doing something like this on my own scares me which is why I suggested a challenge. Im sure there are plenty of others who want to open a bss and Im sure we could all support one another in this. Basically what do you think? AND do you have any tips on opening a bss and what the startup costs would be?

PM Matuncks...she's currently researching opening a BSS in AL. She's probably got plenty of great ideas.

For ladies with the time and resources to do this, I think it's a wonderful idea. We definitely need to keep our dollars rotating among ourselves.

Here is an insert about the fees from the contract. I inquired last month about signing up. I am really interested. One issue that I am having is that they create the website for you. I already know html so I really don't need anyone doing that for me. There are alot of things in the agreement that I don't like. I am still considering doing this but maybe on my own.

Copy:
  1. Fees/Deposit/Remaining Balance
Member agrees to pay BOBSA the sum of $15,000, at the commencement of this Agreement, in full/ or agreed partial payment. In return, BOBSA agrees to pay to Member, on a monthly basis at the end of each month, sixty percent (60%) of the net profits from each sale from the Member’s cyber store.
A minimum nonrefundable deposit of fifty percent (50%) of the sum is required to commence work.
A 50% deposit in the amount of $7,500 is due and payable at the signing of this contact.
Communication between BOBSA’s Developer and the Member is crucial during this phase to ensure that the ultimate publication will have accurate Member information such as Business name, address, etc. Upon completion of this stage, the Member will be asked to confirm acceptance for contextual information in site via e-mail or by signing a printed copy of the design. Once this acceptance is received from the Member, the work necessary to complete the project will begin.
Upon completion of the web site, an e-mail or letter and invoice will be sent to the Member advising the Member that the work has been completed. Final payment of the remaining 50% balance plus any additional charges incurred will be due upon website completion as per the design. Final payment of the remaining 50% balance plus any additional Member-approved charges incurred will be payable as follows:
  • Half within fifteen (15) days of receipt of the notice of the completion of the website as per the design; and

  • Half within thirty (30) days of receipt of the notice of the completion of the website as per the design.

BOBSA reserves the right to remove all web content from the Internet if payment is not made within thirty-one (31) days after receipt of the notice of completion of the website as per the design. Most frequently, problems making payment timely are the result of poor communication channels. If a payment delay is anticipated, please contact BOBSA to discuss potential problems in advance. If problems are anticipated we may be able to accommodate an alternate arrangement.

I volunteer at a black owned BSS and our problem is that some vendors won't let us buy from them because we're not Sally's nor Korean :(

I heard this from a AA BSS owner... I asked for a conditioner, I think it was motions, and he said he was having a hard time getting it in stock because of the vendors.

If my $$$ is green why are you worried about if I am Korean or not.

I was thinking of opening a brick-and-mortar BSS. I figured it would take me about 1 1/2 to 2 years to save up. I wonder how the vendors know if the owners aren't Korean or some other Asian ethnicity...wouldn't I just be doing business as "Kim's Beauty Supply" or whatever I name my business?
