Do you think of your hair as extremely curly? As nappy or what? I think of my self as someone with very small curls, but I know that a non-LHCFer would not understand.

I use to think curly but was corrected by this guy. He was like you don't have curly hair. That was early on my Natural stage. I realize I am more coily than anything.

if i wash it, air dry, unmanipulated, i would say tightly coiled/curly--most white people i've encountered say my hair is extremely curly.

but if i wash, dry, then comb, my hair looks totally different and i call that my nappy style

hey country gal! can u elaborate? what does "coily" mean? and how does it differ from "curly" ::confused smiley::

Unique. Its not shirley temple and it aint steel wool. Id have to actually say it doesnt have a curl. More of a wave.

I think of my hair as kinky and coily. Like Country gal I came to the realization that my hair was not curly, when I texturized it, it looked curly for a minute though. I've always been an optimistic, half-full kinda person regarding most aspects of my life but when I first started this natural journey I could see so many of the limits of my natural hair. Now, praise the Lord, I am seeing the possibilities. LOL kinky and coily equal big, dense and lush. No floppy fros here! I finally realize that I love my height, my eye color, my shape, I accept them as gifts from God, my thang, that's how I feel about my hair now, kinky, coily, some places more tightly coiled than others and it's my special gift.

Just Nappy.

Coily when wet, curly with X product, Wavy in a bun, etc. etc. etc. I choose not to quibble over the semantics.

My hair is just plain nappy. ;)

I try to refer to it as textured and give it a degree if specifics are further requried (highly, tightly, loosley, loser, tighter, more, less, etc) because everyone seems to have their own definition of curly vs. kinky or coily hair and it's too much of a headache for ME to deal with.

I generally say my hair is "coily." A coil is a curl but when you say "coil" specifically it immediately conveys the tiny size and growing up/out rather than down. It's like a micro-curl :yep:

I have a weird mix. I have 3 diffent types of curls. Large C curls, mini spirals and coffee stir sized curls.

I will generally say nappy or coily but the best description came from my friends 7 year old daughter who said my natural hair looked like ramen noodles.

i'm gonna cosign with so1913 on this one and just say that is textured cause somedays it is more coily, others more curly and i am working with more than one texture and if it is in a ponytail it is wavy in the front.

As a 4a/4b I consider my hair kinky and coily. Honestly, the 4b part is actually wavy (kinky waves) but I won't bother ripping about Andre's flawed system regarding 4b hair types. I will also use the term "highly textured." I also consider my hair nappy, but I usually use kinky because there's less history behind the word.

I always understood coils/napps to be a subset of curly, rather than it's own independent group, myself. Maybe because I understand any texture that is not straight has some type of bend or pattern (uniform or not) that could be seen as a curl. Is this incorrect?
Sometimes to the non-black folks in casual conversation, I say extremely curly or super curly frizzy just to keep it from turning it into a big black hair lesson.
But I think of my hair as kinky-curly-cottony-frizzy.

My hair is extremely tightly coiled, springy, and kinky... My hair is also fine-stranded but dense.

I'm loving the ramen noodle comparison.

Definitely curly. I told a co-worker that all black people have curly hair just some tighter than others...she hit me with "Yo hair curly...mine is nappy".

But days like today when I'm scared to take a comb to my head yeah I agree with her

My hair definitely has some curly tendencies, like some patches look like they were straw-set. But in the grand scheme of things when I step out of the shower my hair is a bush or an afro. That's how I refer to it "my bush."

I just call it nappy/natural. I really like the term naptural. Until the hair boards I didn't know much about all these definitions we use now..4a, 4b etc.
