Hello everyone! I lurked this forum since late 2010–I was 19, now I’m 30 and getting serious about my hair after falling through the weave rabbit hole.
1. What length is your hair at?
2. Is your hair relaxed, texlaxed or natural?
3. Would you consider your hair healthy?
4. What has been some of the hurdles you have had in your hair growth journey?
5. What are you going to do differently this year?
6. What are you going to do with or for your hair when you reach APL or BSL/MBL?
* Mapleoats asks; "What is your focus besides length this year?"
1. My hair length is 14.5 inches all over. It might be APL but I claim full SL because I’m too scared to get it fully straight. I’m hopeful that if I continue with my new found habits I will not plateau. My hair is 4A/4B, Fine, Medium Density.
2. My hair is natural for the most part but I bleached my ends in February and then dyed my hair black in September.
3. I’ve been nursing my hair since April so it’s well on its way to looking and feeling healthy. I’m not seeing any breakage and my curl pattern is intact so I’m not fussing about anything.
4. The first few years of my natural Journey were great (2010-2012), I followed all the rules and grew my hair to about 12 inches—the longest it had ever been in my life. Before that I had mostly known relaxers, braids and ‘pick and drop’.
When I started to gain some length (and a bit of money) I got into flatirons and weaves and tried to be a straight haired natural even though my texture is fine. I got addicted to this look and suffered many setbacks (2012-2016). My hair didn’t budge past 13 inches and I gave up on my growth journey.
Around 2016 I put away the flat irons and went on a heartless journey but alternated between single twists and curly weaves. This also failed because I wasn’t adequately moisturizing my hair and my take down technique was atrocious. I thought that maybe I wasn’t meant to have long hair. I stayed stuck at 13 inches!
In 2019, I went to Asia and stayed in braids and let it all out when I ran out of braiding hair...I also kinda rediscovered the beauty of my hair and got many compliments. This year, I started dating a guy who truly encouraged me to wear it naturally. I’ve been extensionless for about 9 months STRAIGHT now, which is huge for me. My hair has been getting the TLC it craved and received in the beginning of my hair journey thus far and it’s been a complete turn around. My hair is growing like a weed.
5. This year was about giving my hair a fighting chance and I will be continuing that in 2021. No more using fake ‘protective’ styles as a crutch to never deal with my hair. If I want a little extra I will be using better length clip-ins that won’t stay for more that 24hrs. My hair will not go more than 72hrs without receiving moisture.
6. When I reach full APL I will carry on as usual. When I reach BSL I will treat myself to a trim at Curl Embassadors.
I will pre-poo overnight with Vatika Oil.
I will be using old school cholesterol treatments every other week along with a DC to strengthen my hair.
I will be consistent with washing, conditioning and moisturizing. I put my hair buns or just twist it up.
Styling with be tertiary in this journey—especially since I won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
Focus besides natural hair:
Diet overhaul—one small change I’ve made is having one salad a day. Focusing on nutrition before taste.
Exercise for at least 20 mins a day
And reading one book a week.
