[USER=325927 said:nisemac[/USER];14220277] (2) instead of leave-in, then sealing with coconut oil, i'm doing leave in-->oil-->aloe vera to seal. noticed a very big difference in my hair. it was very soft and moisturized. it also defined my curls really nice. i think this really helped with keeping in the moisure.
Can you share more on the leave-in, oil, aloe vera?
pretty simple process. after washing and DC, i emulsify a dime size amount of leave-in and work it thru very wet hair, adding more as needed. i make sure its coated evenly but not too heavy, and then come thru. its the last time a comb touches my hair (except to part for cornrows) after detangling. i then do the same with the coconut oil--melt in hands, emulsify and apply in sections, smoothing with fingers. then, depending on how wet my hair is, i let it dry till damp, then part with fingers and do some fat braids using the AVG. then i let dry. once dry, i untwist to do cornrows, using a small amount of oil as i braid.
What leave in are you using? Did you use AVG or AVJ?
i have a few favorites--Giovanni Direct Leave In, Kinky Curly Knot Today, and Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Mask. but i've found any conditioner i can leave in my hair works well. given my make-do environment, i've been using L'oreal Intensive Repair conditioner and their DC treatment. i use the conditioner when i detangle and as a leave in. seems i'm learning it may be more about how you use a product versus what product you use.
Why did you decide to try this?
i ran out of Eco styler gel--use it for my edges and decided to use AVG. i got good results with it, using it to smooth any flyaways and to keep my cornrows neat. also, while reading the bottle, it said 'seals in moisture' so i figured why not? i did it last week, cornrowed my hair and, when i needed to redo one, I noticed my hair felt significantly softer and moisturized (not greasy). i should add, i'm always on the lookout for the 'kitchen' alternative...what products in my kitchen can i use to take care of my hair. again, its hard for me to get the products i like, so i've been developing my own backup plan. AVG fits perfectly into the plan.
After you applied it, you did a WNG or did you put it up?
initially wng. but my normal process is to do a few braids to air dry and then cornrow. i could see doing this for wngs and for twists/ twist outs.
this weekend, when i redo my hair, i'll try to take some pics showing wng, twist/twist-braid out and my cornrows and edges.
Checking in...
Hairfinity's already giving me growth! On my last wash day after my hair was flatironed my mom and sisters said my hair was noticeably longer. I can't wait to wash my hair this week! I've been sticking to my regimen, especially to maintaining my pH balance. My breakage is almost nonexistent yaaaay!! I wish I had the measurement shirt I ordered so I could track my growth easier. It should be here soon though.

nisemac Thanks for the "interview" ala faithVA
This sounds like it may be another experiement I try on my hair as I try to achieve soft and non-greasy hair like in this thread I started. If my other experiements fail, I'll go this route and see what happens. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks @nisemac. After reading it, I had to laugh because I asked you questions like it was a tv interview. I appreciate you walking me through it though. I definitely want to try this. I may actually try it this weekend.
I do the same thing. I saw on a blog called Curly and Young this girl used AVG, Herbal Essences LTR leave in and vatika oil as a moisturizing leave-in. I tried the same mixture, instead using hot six oil and my curls had never been more defined. When it dries, it leaves my hair soft for a long time. I plan to experiment with other leave ins in the future.
