My Hair is too short and I don't know how to Braid,:look: so........I have a Men's Durag, (Satin Cap)

So....I apply a Daily Creamy Moisturizer, and I seal with Oil. i.e. Castor, Wheat Germ, EFA (Essential Fatty Acids), or Nexxus Biotin. And Cover with Durag.:yep:

It's been a Great "Fix" for the Winter Weather. Keeps the Head Warm, Lessens Manipulation, Protects from the Elements and you can moisturize and really care for your hair All at the Same time.

And you always have a Good Hair Day.

Really useful responses. I used to wear a wig a few years ago and I baggied underneath, which was super healthy for my hair. I retained a ton of growth. However, baggying for too long can cause over-conditioning and a musty smell, so I don't want to go that route this time. I will only baggy under a wig if I am making short trips, running quick errands, but not for an entire day.

I do know how to cornrow, and I am surprised by how many people do not. Despite that, with SO much new growth, braiding is too much manipulation, plus it hurts when I have the two textures. I plan to box braid instead. I bought the wave cap, so I'll try that method.

Maybe, I'll try out some braid sprays.

Wish we coulda chosen more than one option: I use braids underneath a mesh wig cap. I can't cornrow my own hair, so I do 4-8 big braids or plaits, and just pin 'em down. My hair is quite thick, but since I braid while damp, it really lays down once I throw on the scarf to "flatten" it. My wig doesn't look bulky that way, lol.

ETA: I moisturize hair while still in braids every 2-3 days at night. I only wear the wig when going out, so it has a chance to dry before the next day's wear, for example.

I twist my hair in about 6 sections, pin them down then put on a du-rag, then the wig. Wig/stocking caps cause way too much tension for me.

This daily moisturizer sounds :yep::yep::yep::yep:

You can choose more than one option, I set up the poll that way.

my hair is in 6 plaits. i moisturize my hair twice a day.

when i'm baggying i put on a plastic dc cap, and a regular stocking cap on top because the shower cap(dc cap) is slippery and already protecting my hair from friction. plus the traction from the stocking cap keeps shower cap in place.

when i'm not baggying i moisturize and put on a satin cap on.

my hair is doing great :yep:

:yep:Yes to the bolded. I tried cornrows under my half wigs and while I did like the method- it was just way too much manipulation, and I shedded extra, extra hair. So I am sticking to what I have always done, which is 1 or 2 plaits that I tuck under with a no breakage hair band.

ETA: I also moisturize and seal before I put the plaits in.

I have been cornrowing in a beehive pattern and tucking the loose end into the space between the cornrows. Then I put on a mesh weaving cap to hold everything in place. I use either a men's skull cap or a satin du-rag under my wig, especially in winter. Come hot weather I skip the skull cap/du-rag because I tend to pass out when I get too hot.

Braids!!

I've been wearing my hair in cornrows underneath my wig since September! I take it down every week or every other week and deeeep condition, shampoo, condition, and re-cornrow to slap iut back underneath the wig. I went to get it straightened (used my pass for the Bootcamp Challenge!) for the first time since September (I mean no heat since then...) and it looks and FEELS amazing!

Now I'm trying to decide if I'm going to wear my hair out and just take extra care of it without the wig and then bun most of the time, or keep the wig...

Inspired by this thread so I went out and bought my first lacefront. I'm not glueing or taping jack to my head though.

I'm washing, dcing, braiding and wearing a wig cap under this puppy.

Maybe I'll wig it for a few months?

Thanks y'all!

For my hair, I think a break from manipulation and the elements is necessary. How inspiring it is to hear yours benefitted from your wig regimen. Thanks for sharing.

Awww, Deltagyrl, so glad that this thread inspired you.

I use a men's sport skull cap as well. I can go at least 2 days between moisturizing my natural hair when wearing it- that's how good it works at helping to retain moisture :yep:

ETA: I put my hair in four plaits, cross them in an X pattern across my head, and pin them down

Thanks, but how do you braid your hair like in your avatar? I tried once to braid my hair in a circle, but I can't get my hands positioned to continue the braid around my hair, if that makes any sense. When I get up around my ear I don't know how to keep braiding underhand.

I get my hair cornrowed and wear a wig cap, but I am definitely going to be switching to the mens satin skull cap.

I can't do individual braids because it makes the wig look lumpy and pulls the edge up so high on my forehead that it looks like it's about to fall off.

Other: I put a clear plastic disposable conditioning cap on over my hair , plop on the wig, and then tuck in the extra bits of plastic poofing out from under the wig so they are hidden.

Unfortunately, I do not know how to cornbraid or even regular braid, so I do the best I can (put hair into the smallest bun possible if damp or, if dry, put in ponytail and then twist the pony hair up and use hair pins or those long flat salon clips to secure the tail flat against my skull). This makes for a bulkier, unpleasanter fit, of course.

But even if my hair were braided, I would still do the condiitoning cap (aka full head baggy) because it always keeps my hair moist and it helps the wig slide over my big head better.

It's quite hard to explain, but I braid as far as I can in one direction (usually from left to right from my frame of reference, leading with my right hand). To give you a sense of the position, imagine the back of your head being 12 o'clock, the forehead at 6 o'clock and the left and right side at 3 and 9 o'clock respectively.

I start my hand position between 12 and 3 o'clock, and braid as far past 9 as I can. I can usually make it to about 12, while braiding from left to right. After going as far right as I can, I then shift my finger (and shoulder position) back towards the far left (as much as I can). Keeping my finger on the braid to keep it from unraveling and still leading with my right hand, I begin to braid starting at the 12 o'clock moving from left to right again.

Hopefully that was at least somewhat clear as mud because I really don't know how else to explain

I either corn row my hair or put it in a single braid going back my tuck the end under with a bobby pin , then I put on a net wig cap because it is less tension on my hair line.

I cornrow my hair;plaiting the front so it goes around the perimeter of my head and then braiding the rest vertically down. I moisturize daily and wash weekly, but i keep the braids in for a month. No wig caps for me.....those things give me a bloody headache.

I have been using a stocking cap or nothing--lately a stocking cap--my hair is pressed so it's just pincurled underneath; when it reverts back I will plait it--but looking at these other options I may try a shower cap and also a satin skully cap--I need all the extra help with keeping my hair moisturized as I can get

I cornrow my hair and bun it. The band on the wig cap tends to irritate my edges and make them dry.

Reading all these posts, I see that I need to add more moisturizing to my routine.
