Seriously.. Why aren't we a sorority???

No need for apologies.. I knew that some would oppose and some would be for it. The ones that are for it will be for it and the ones that aren't wont be. Its really not a big issue.. Nor should it change the nature of the board if it is put into action.. Just like the many other groups that are on this forum it is an option to join or not. Aint nobody serving Kool-aid over here. LMAO!

But I think it would. Not everyone wants to be in a sorority, not everyone is even old enough to be in a sorority and I know a number of people who wouldn't/couldn't be in it because of their religious beliefs. So if the board was changed to Long Hair Care Sorority, I think quite a few members might leave and any future members might be alienated because of this.

I might have been misunderstood.. but.. the Long Hair Care Forum will always be the Long Hair Care Forum... I dont think that any of us have intentions of switching the Forum to a sorority. I never had that in mind..
If a group of LHCFers wish to form a group and call it a sorority then I think its cool and Im down!

not this again.... :look:
for some reason i think that sometimes these threads are started for those who are interested in joining a BGLO to ask questions on the sly OR to get those of us who are actually IN sororities riled up....jmho.
LHCF is wonderful! but it is NOT a sorority.

love y'all

Still tripping off a few sorors encouraging this...:nono:

(I understand non greeks, but Greeks...:wallbash:)

Again, I can't speak for anyone else, but my Sorority was founded on the principles of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. We have a five point programmatic thrust that underscores and outlines our community engagement. If you would like more information about my Sorority then I would suggest the following link:

http://www.deltasigmatheta.org

All of the members of the National Panhellenic Council, there are nine, have websites and a google serach will more than likely pull up their national websites; which will include genral information about the organizations including informaiton about founding, principles, memberhship requirements and community involvement.

My organization does so much for communities of color in the United States. So much. And it makes me sad to see our commitment, all 97 years of it, often reduced to whispered incidents of hazing (true and not true), calls, stepshows and strolling. Most of those activities (except hazing because Delta Sigma Theta is a non-hazing organization) have meaning for the members of BGLOs and while it may seems "cool" there is a cultural significance. Since my membership in Delta I have given myself, my time and my money (and I am not talkin' bout no $6.95 :) to the missions and goals of the organization. Delta is more than the sum of it's members. It is a commitment to our community and eachother.
thanks for that
your organisation sounds like it does alot of good things

you are wayyyy off . I dont care if she says she don't know me, it's the other stuff she said that made me post that. :spinning:

I didn't want to be in a sorority when I was in college! Why would I want to be in one now?!?! I think sororities are quite silly.

Anyway, i'm through with this thread. LOL

I think it was supposed to be lighthearted but y'all thought OP wanted trap y'all into some kind of sorority. I don't know how y'all didn't understand that.

Okay. Bye! LOL

:lachen::lachen::lachen: That's the thing...I'm not. I agree with her...and I don't care that she says she doesn't know me. She doesn't. And I don't know her either. Heck, till I saw her post I did even know she was a member here. I thank all of the women on here for sharing their advice and information with me...and through PMing there are several women of whom I have come to know a lot and have grown closer to...but at the end of the day it's just hair.

The only reason I thought your post was hilarious was because at same time you were telling us to "chill out", you seemed to take it personally that she said she didn't know any of us.

Okay, for real this time. I'm done. As long as somebody doesn't say something about my Mama, I'm really out. :lachen::lachen::lachen:

When I was in college, I refused to join a sorority because I didn't want to be a "sheep" (please no offense intended, just my personal view at the time) - then I joined the military (Navy), the biggest fraternity on the planet and really learned the definition of "sheep". Now I understand all the good that sororities do and the sisterhood involved and I wish that I did pledge. So, as far as I'm concerned, this is a great idea and if it comes to be, I'll def join.

Luv my sistas!

You can join sororities after you received your Bachelor's degree. They are called Alumnae chapters and all of the 9 Black Greek Letter Organizations have them. I highly encourage you to look into it for we are ALWAYS on the lookout for brothers and sisters who are serious about helping out our communities!

In a sense it already is a sorority

Dictionary.com

Word Origin & History

sorority
1532, "body of women united for some purpose," from M.L. sororitas "sisterhood, of or pertaining to sisters," from L. soror "sister" (see sister). OED 2nd ed. lists first reference for sense of "women's society in a college or university" as c.1900, but they existed at least 20 years before this.

And that purpose is to grow hair long and healthy...to make it something more than what it already is, is pretty futile

So any person who has $6.50 can be in this 'sorority'?

The men on the forum too? What if they wanted in?

Just curious.

*shrug* I don't care what we call it so long as I can still come and get the best hair advice in the world! :) :) :)

:yep: I agree, although sometimes it can get pretty hostile around here. This is the first forum that i've seen with so many encouraging and supporting people.

Your siggy is SO PRECIOUS!!! Ya'll are SO PRETTY!!

OP: ITA!!! Let's do this ladies!

Thanks AvaSpeaks! I think I may look into it.

I first stumbled upon this site back in 2004 and was a lurker for a few years before joining. I visited other hair care forums and in my opionion they really can't compare to this site. The women on this site are on a whole nother level when it comes to hair care and views of AA hair as opposed to society and other BHC sites. In my opinion the women here make this site top shelf. From the support to the brutal honesty to the intelligence found here is unmatched in my opinion.

I LOVE YA'LL! I'm in 100%!

Long Live LHCF!!!

How did this go bad? This ^^ is almost my thoughts exactly. Oh well...lol

Hi Ladies',
WOW! I think that I agree with ClassicBeauty, social club, yes, sorority, no......Believe me when I say that this group has much more of the makings of a social club rather than sorority..I think that LHCF Social Club is a better idea, and I say this being a 20 year member of a Black Greek Letter Organization.

I love all of my LHCF sisters. Relaxed, Natural, and Undecided(lol).,I was recently looking into joining a BGLO (black greek letter org.) and thought "I already belong to one". I am so excited that we can all come together on here and help, encourage, motivate, inspire, and edify each other..shoot we even lend helping hands to the ladies that want help but aren't apart of the forum. Isnt that what a sorority is about?
Sorry to get all mushy but I think we should deff. pursue this.
I looked into the archives and saw something similar but it looks like it was just left alone.
Hopefully I'll get some support on this!!

HI OP,

(please don't take offense this is just my opinion and suggestion)

I do understand what you were trying to suggest and see how you can easily make the comparison between BGLO and LHCF. I can also see how this suggestion could be viewed as offensive to a member of a BGLO. BGLO's are built on much more than what's mentioned above. You have to consider the grounds on which they were built, what they represent, and the meaning and what they do. I too, want to be apart of the BGLO and I will as soon as I complete my degree... that's one of my goals, but there's no way I can see comparing the two. (can't wait to be apart of the Divine Nine)

You certainly are not alone about how you feel! I feel likewise. I think it would have been better and safer to say sorority like or either some type of social club.

I support the idea of becoming some type of social club member however; I cannot support the idea of creating a BGLO type sorority on LHCF. I just don't think the two compare.

Great idea... wrong language. :look:

I guess this is directed to me...

If ladies feel like LHCF should be a sorority, and they are willing to do the work to make that a reality, I don't quite see the issue. Trust, I will not be revealing ANY (not nan) secret, code of conduct, standard of procedure nor bylaw of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED to help make this a reality. I'd hope other BGLO sister greeks were taught to cherish the same documents on their orgs...

I have reservations about an LHCF sorority because I'm not sure that I see the value added. If this sorority is based on ladies on this board--everyone isn't interested in sorority life, and that is fair! Then, I forsee there being different sects of the sorority, based on hair type, or even the sorority members handing hair/beauty advice to Sorority members only. Inevidentably, someone will be disillusiioned with the direction of the first Sorority and more will be created. It just seems like it'd be devisive, and that's not what I think LHCF should be about. Lastly, the big PINK elephant in the room is, a sorority based on haircare and beauty seems shallow.

However, if anyone played SORORITY LIFE on FB, did you notice how the SL Sororities took off--the Zetas and the HOEs? I mean these chicks had their own code of conduct and applicaiton processes. I thought it was utterly ridiculous. Heck, LHCF has more of a basis to start a sorority than a Facebook game! The way people were joining those FB "sororities" suggested to me that people just generally have a deep need to belong to something bigger than themselves.

While, I THINK LHCF should be enough, for some it may not be. So, if OP and her group decide to go forward with their Sorority idea, DO IT. There's not much to loose, but some women could gain the Sorors you and I already have.

My Sorority will not be impacted by this, I can not speak for the other D9's, but IMO, a LHCF Sorority would not even be in the same genre as ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED.

Hi Soror Rufus12; Happy Belated Founders' Day!!!

I think the semantics change could make the idea more tolerable.

*start of thread hijack* The SL Facebook HOEs must have some pretty lax rules about membership because I have several people in my SL house who identify as HOEs but I definitely did not "join" SL any sorority. *end of thread hijack*

Even though I think it's a bad idea, if someone did attempt to start a sorority, I think it should be set up elsewhere with it's on site, mission statement, code of conduct, etc. And LHCF should not be apart of the name.

Soror Cyd Chicago,
Wishing you a Happy Belated Founders' Day!

I completely agree with the bolded!

Once again I am resisting the urge to "preach"

But I will say as a PROUD Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
This idea is garbage and is a slap in the face to mine and any BGLO's.

now can we just let this thread die! and if its that serious go start a LHCF club!

Sorry, Im low key tired of seeing this thread.
