Seriously.. Why aren't we a sorority???

I thought what she was saying was a cute concept, not saying I'd do it, but in reading more analysis, I'd have to agree with some naysayers.

excuse my ignorance but i've never really understood what sororities are or do?
what would this mean if LHCF became a sorority?

Again, I can't speak for anyone else, but my Sorority was founded on the principles of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. We have a five point programmatic thrust that underscores and outlines our community engagement. If you would like more information about my Sorority then I would suggest the following link:

http://www.deltasigmatheta.org

All of the members of the National Panhellenic Council, there are nine, have websites and a google serach will more than likely pull up their national websites; which will include genral information about the organizations including informaiton about founding, principles, memberhship requirements and community involvement.

My organization does so much for communities of color in the United States. So much. And it makes me sad to see our commitment, all 97 years of it, often reduced to whispered incidents of hazing (true and not true), calls, stepshows and strolling. Most of those activities (except hazing because Delta Sigma Theta is a non-hazing organization) have meaning for the members of BGLOs and while it may seems "cool" there is a cultural significance. Since my membership in Delta I have given myself, my time and my money (and I am not talkin' bout no $6.95 :) to the missions and goals of the organization. Delta is more than the sum of it's members. It is a commitment to our community and eachother.

Great synopsis of our organization! Kudos! :)

Never thought of it this way but this is sooooooooooo true:yep: we really are like a sorority...including the hazing:look:  okay but forreal though this site is such a source of inspiration, I've seen sista's entire perspective on their hair evolve and mature before my eyes from the way we support eachother and celebrate black beauty and its so touching.

I feel that LHCF is this swesome counterbalance to the media because here we celebrate our hair for what it is and exalt it as beautiful.....I've come t learn here that many ladies dont live in areas where they get that irl but they get it here.

I'm so proud to see sista's with deep gorgeous mahagany skin tones with type 4 hair who were always taught to believe they couldn't achieve long length become walking talkin hair swanging examples that stand in exception to that...it inspires me.

I love LHCF we can get rowdy but at the end of the day were here to support eachother......I hope this spirit of sisterhood and overall comraderie can culminate in the greater black community in the same way.

Wow....looks like you're not the only mushy one xcuzememiss:love2:
:yep: To think of the way my mind set has changed as a black woman about MY HAIR in the past two years.. I've learned more from this site that has changed me for the better than I have learned in any other institution (within the span of 2 years anyway) This site has helped me so much I do love you ladies like sorority sisters !

honestly, I see no pressure from "MEDIA" whatsoever. Every commercial has a coloured woman with textured hair. and those that don't are now a minority.

I'm tired of hearing about some ominous outside force that makes a woman feel bad about her hair named "media," when it could be your mama telling you your hair looks a hot mess. (and it just might~).

A sorority....yea I don't think so whatsoever. If I met these women from the forum in person, I would not consider them my sisters, and I do not consider them my sisters on the forum either. I am a woman who engages other women to acquire that which I may not already have regarding hair related knowledge. It doesn't get any deeper than that.

I'd wear a T-shirt though.

I love the forum in its current format. I don't feel as if making it a sorrority would enhance LHCF as we can display the same attributes of sisterhood and service without the label "sorrority" affixed. Plus, we do have a male member or two; if we became a sorrority, what we do with our male counterparts on this hhj?

Ummm...being that Beverly created this site, and it is both her business and her creation/dream...

...I think it's a little presumptuous to say that anyone should make it a sorority. It's Beverly's job to define what this is, and she has done it pretty well, I think. I don't want to be in a sorority; I just want to grow my hair long and healthy.

I mean, how would you feel if you went out to get in your car to go to work, and there was a family in it, and they had slept in it overnight and decided to call your car their bed? You might feel some kind of way about that.

I mean no disrespect and hope that I have not offended anyone. It's just that this point (Beverly's ownership) seems to have been completely overlooked. Has anyone PM'd Beverly to see what her take on her business is and whether or not she ever intends to create a sorority out of LHCF?

Again, I hope the bricks don't come out flying at me, but I think this is an important oversight....

Throwing bricks at the truth

nah girl not here, not ever:lachen:

I think y'all are making way too much out of this. I think the OP just had an idea. I don't think she is planning to take over LHCF or anything. Y'all need to lighten up!

HijabFlygirl really insulted us all and folks are giving her "high fives"!

HijabFlygirl, there's quite a few people on here that I think would be nice in person. But you? Naw. I wouldn't want you as a friend IRL.

OP, nice thread. It's interesting.

:ohsnap: This thread is gonna take a turn for the worst.

A sorority based on striving for long hair?
Seriously?

Let's all take two and half seconds to think about that...

...and we're done

I'm not a member of a BGLO. The one I wanted to join was under suspension when I was in undergrad. However, I dont see others forming a sisterhood (which is what a sorority is, regardless of its principals and mission) as a threat or mockery to any BGLOs. People form ALL types of social groups for ALL types of reasons.

I personally think it's just, well, silly to form a group based around the desire for longer hair. It just seems so superficial.

However, being play cousins on line isnt a bad thing :)

LMAO!! Some people take themselves WAY too seriously!! I think it was a freaking joke or just an acknowledgment that we all share a common interest (obsession?) and we are a community of supporters and learners...CHILLAX

BTW I'm a Girl Scout for life...

I don't get it. You think that we're making too much out of this and telling us to "lighten up" but at the same time are "offended" by what HijabFlygirl said? Offended enough that you are telling the girl you wouldn't even want to be her friend in real life? Really? :lachen: 1 :lachen:2:lachen:3 for my number and I'm out.

I've said my piece.

She said the same thing about EVERY one of us. So why are your feathers ruffled because I said that I wouldn't want HER as a friend?

Is she your sister or cousin or something?

Goodness gracious!!

:lachen::lachen::lachen: That's the thing...I'm not. I agree with her...and I don't care that she says she doesn't know me. She doesn't. And I don't know her either. Heck, till I saw her post I did even know she was a member here. I thank all of the women on here for sharing their advice and information with me...and through PMing there are several women of whom I have come to know a lot and have grown closer to...but at the end of the day it's just hair.

The only reason I thought your post was hilarious was because at same time you were telling us to "chill out", you seemed to take it personally that she said she didn't know any of us.

Okay, for real this time. I'm done. As long as somebody doesn't say something about my Mama, I'm really out. :lachen::lachen::lachen:

OMG I thought OP was just having a loving moment and wanted to share it with the team..

LOL. Sheesh!!!!

I thought OP was being serious, as the title of this thread is, "Seriously.. Why aren't we a sorority???"

At the end of her post she says that she searched the archives for more information and was looking to other members for support. I assumed support in making LHCF a Sorority. Sometimes it's hard to detect sarcasm or joking over the 'net, if she was joking, I totally missed the mark.

I must say though, if so many of "you" talk about it, be about it. All this banter is fine and dandy, but if "you" think LHCF should be a sorority, take bold steps forward with that plan. It has come up often enough that maybe it is something for interested parties to explore. The world is changing, so maybe a virtual Sorority is a niche that should be filled.

Gonna have to keep a close eye on this thread. :lachen:

I took this as a joke. But if the OP is serious then maybe one of the actual Sorority members can give her a serious answer as to why this would be impractical. I know someone already mentioned the level of commitment Sisters have for each other; I seriusly doubt you're gonna get that level from too many Ladies here on the forum. IMHO we are a sisterhood that shares one common interest, but beyond that we are not committed to each other.

And she would possibly not be able to use the name LHCF since it belongs to Beverly. Just a thought. I made light if this idea in my earlier posts OP; sorry, I didn't realize you were serious.

Well as I stated earlier I think it would be a great idea. Not every sorority follows the same practices. Sisterhood or sisterly bonds are formed in many different enviroments and atmosheres. It just so happens that many women on here feel a sisterly bond or connection that they might not be able to recieve anywhere else. As far as making it a requirement to participate in this forum is truly crazy! I wouldnt impose a system on anybody that didn't want to be involved (nobody is a Stalin on this board. LOL)
I see no problem with it. The purpose of this thread was to state how I felt and throw some ideas out there and see what could be built out of it. Its all in fun and in kindness.. No beefin' on this thread

No need for apologies.. I knew that some would oppose and some would be for it. The ones that are for it will be for it and the ones that aren't wont be. Its really not a big issue.. Nor should it change the nature of the board if it is put into action.. Just like the many other groups that are on this forum it is an option to join or not. Aint nobody serving Kool-aid over here. LMAO!
