When I hit waist I stop
Has anyone tried them? I've seen mention of them on other boards and have seen a few examples. However I'm curious about the upkeep and whether they get really frizzy.

Bump, I'm leaning towards these.

Except I'm light skinned with Brown hair. I'm having trouble finding brown yarn that's a good color match.

A friend has these - she put them in herself and they're :gorgeous: it gets fuzzy but looks prettier the older it is.

I also wanted to get it done but don't think it would look nice in honey blonde yarn:look:

Im curious about these. How did she manage the upkeep. Yarn is essentially cotton and we know cotton soaks up all moisture in your hair, so how was she able to keep her hair moisturized? I imagine this would be a concern when such a fiber is intertwined in your strands.

I just started wearing these. The keep my hair very moisturized and when I take them out my hair is still feels soft and healthy. If you get them just make sure the yarn is 100% ACRYLIC. WOOL will automatically get matted in your hair. I l leave mine in for a good 2 months and redo them. I like them better than micros braids and the regular box braids. These are a keeper for me. Also when you wash them be very careful. They will soak up the water and become heavy so be careful with your edges and napes. I keep mine mositurized with African Royale Braid spray. Just Spray them Twice a day and oil my scalp one or twice a week. HTH

Never use cotton yarn for the braids. I use 100% acrylic and they help my hair retain a lot of moisture!! when I take them out my hair feel very soft

I'm in the process of putting in my first set right now. I'm about half way through. When researching them, I was warned repeatedly about using acrylic and not wool or cotton. I used black with 3 strands in each braid so they look like small to medium dreds. I'll post pics when I'm done (probably tomorrow). BlackOnyx on YouTube has multiple videos about yarn braids.

What they said, she used acrylic yarn very nice, and her hair looks great when she takes them out...

I'm putting yarn braids in now. The color is expresso (dark brown) by Vanna's Choice. I bought chocolate from Red Heart to put on the top. I'll post pics when I'm done.

I have in yarn braids right now (although I am thorougly sick of them I want to take them out but I have to go abroad next week so I'm stuck with them in)

They only get frizzy at the root. the actual braid itself does not get frizzy because it's yarn, there are no tiny hair strands to start poking out. My hair is natural so it behaves with the yarn too. I have had them in for 5 weeks now, and only the roots are a little raggy due to NG but since they look like dreads in the first place, it sort of helps with the look, since a lot of people's dreads aren't fixed directly to their scalps like that.

This is the first time I've done them so I can't tell you the effect they have on your hair, but I definitely used acrylic yarn (read heart), and I use African Braid sheen spray with protein to spritz them everyday (although I'm lazy about this) I DC every week by diluting a mix of conditioner and putting it in a bowl, then applying it to the length of hte braid that has my hair in it only with an applicator brush (its actually faster than it sounds) and massaging it in. I baggy overnight and then wash it out in the morning and lightly oil my scalp with coconut oil (<-this every two weeks actually). I find I have to shampoo more often too to avoid getting flakes (probably due to DCing so often in braids but I'm not giving that up.)

These are the yarn braids that I finished over the weekend.

Your yarn braids look nice! I LOVE yarn braids because a skein or two of yarn is cheap and they kind of look like locs. Since I have natural hair, yarn braids look better as my hair grows out.

These are really nice. You did these yourself?

Also, I guess I am confused as to how the hair remains soft? The yarn doesn't try to take moisture from your hair?

I understand that they hold moisture. I haven't spritz them yet but you must use %100 Acrylic and not cotton or wool.

Your braids came out really nice!

I'm putting in some yarn braids right now. Well, taking a little break.

Yarn braids are going to be a keeper for me for the following reasons:

1)The yarn is cheap. I paid $2.28 for a spool at Wal-Mart. Be sure to buy the RED HEART brand. YouTubers say this is the best brand. It is 100% acrylic with no dye.

2)Easy to install. No tangles like regular braiding hair.

3)Keeps the hair moisturized.

4)Easy to style. See Kellum's fotki or blackonyx77 on YouTube has a series of how to styling tutorials for yarn braids. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=blackonyx77+genie+locs&search_type=&aq=8&oq=blackon
