Unrefined Coconut Oil Tip

Thanks for the article. I can never hear enough about my beloved coconut oil :). I read an article somewhat similar to this on another website. I think it was either indiaparents or another middle eastern website. They are very big on hair oiling, and I read that oiling and shampooing go hand in hand over there. They don't shampoo without first oiling their hair. They say it contributes to their long, strong locks.

I can't wait to try my herbal oil infusion. I used coconut oil as a base oil. I'm going to be using that as a treatment weekly. I'm going to put it on my hair and scalp the night before washing, and the next day I'm going to "shampoo" my hair with aritha, neem, and tulsi tea! Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I know this might be a stupid question but I can't remember right now - Does coconut oil penetrate? Or, am I thinking about Olive oil?

ETA: I just did a google search and, yea - it does penetrate and condition. Carry on!

::leaves embarrassed for brain fart::

Refining Nature

Oils by Nature vegetable oils are expeller or cold pressed from the seeds, pulp and flesh of fruits and vegetables sourced from around the world.

Perfect by Design

Vegetable Oils, despite their wide variety, all share a remarkably simple chemical composition. They are mainly composed of one alcohol (glycerol) combined with organic acids.

Storage Tips

To ensure maximum nutrient retention and longevity of the vegetable oils, we recommend adhering to the following guidelines:

Avoid direct sunlight and extreme heat.
Optimal storage temperature range is 40 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Oils should not be left opened for long periods of time between use.
This provides a shelf life of 12+ months.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monounsaturated_fat

[edit] Natural sources
Monounsaturated fats are found in natural foods such as nuts and avocados, and are the main component of tea seed oil and olive oil (oleic acid). Canola oil is 57%–60% monounsaturated fat, olive oil is about 75% monounsaturated fat while tea seed oil is commonly over 80% monounsaturated fat. Other sources include macadamia nut oil, grapeseed oil, groundnut oil (peanut oil), sesame oil, corn oil, popcorn, whole grain wheat, cereal, oatmeal, safflower oil, sunflower oil, tea-oil Camellia, avocado oil.

YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR A MONSATURATED FAT

I don't like step 7 but nice article. I run out of coconut oil quick so I'll be on a search for a cheap big jar of the stuff.

Wow, I may have to start prepooing now. I never quite understood it until I read this article. Can I use coconut oil to prepoo and seal?

I'm coconut oil obsessed when it comes to my twistouts. But does the coconut oil have to be EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL? If so, is there a particular reason why?

You know, I was thinking about my reggie and how it's changed over the years, and I realized that when I was applying Kenra MC to my hair followed by pure coconut oil (as opposed to grease or shea butter) my hair tangled way less, and just felt healthier in general.

I made an order of coconut oil, aloe vera juice and a bunch of other goodies this week, so I'll be going back to my beloved :infatuated: natural products this year.

I will NOT be doing a double shampoo on my hair anytime in the foreseeable future, though! :nono:

ETA: I keep my coconut oil in the fridge... do you ladies do the same?

No I keep mine on the counter in the kitchen.

I think it should be virgin and unrefined and it's probably good if it's organic too.

I heard that extra virgin coconut oil is a marketing ploy.
I heard that the only thing that can be "extra" virgin is olive oil not any other oil.
I think coconut oil is just virgin.

Please if someone knows, let me know.

Great article! Below is a post from another site on hygral fatigue and coconut oil. My hair doesn't particularly "like" being sealed with coconut oil, but after reading this article decided to use it in my pre-poo.

Coconut Oil can prevent hygral fatigue damage

Hygral fatigue - Damage due to swelling and contraction of the hair during the uptake and loss of water. Swelling and de-swelling of hair is one of the causes of hair damage.

Cure - Coconut oil can be used as a pre-wash treatment to prevent the hair shaft from swelling. This in turn may help the cuticle from being raised. Remember that the swelling of the hair shaft can damage the hair cuticle and cortex which can eventually weaken hair.

The swelling of the hair shaft is limited by the presence of oil. The natural process of swelling and de-swelling of the hair shaft is one of the main causes of hair damage.

Coconut oil has a high affinity for the proteins in the hair, meaning it's great for preventing protein loss (cuticle chipping, damaging/abrasion due to washing and wet combing). Once you apply it to your hair, it prevents the constant swelling and shrinking which means less stress on the hair shaft.

I love coconut oil. I buy it in 16 or 32 oz containers, scoop about 4 oz out in a small jar and keep the rest in the fridge.
