Yes, I didnt detangle my hair and I had alot of knots and dreading. I looked like Bod Marley

I know that's right! My older sister is going natural and she's wearing braids while transitioning. Well, When she took her old braids down and washed her hair, she had TANGLES! My mother ended up combing them out for her before she washed it again and it was much easier to detangle. I do believe from now on, my sister will detangle before washing her hair.

i always condition, detangle, wash, then condition again.

sorry you had i problem. the same thing happened to me while transitioning. i definitely learned my lesson. but at least now you know, which means you'll be less likely to make that mistake again.

It happened yesterday. I detangled my hair 2 hours before, thinking it was fine. After I washed and DCed, my hair was a matted mess. One side of my hair was in one BIG Dread filled with knots. I used some Con and mane and tail detangler. The dreading and knots came out but I lost alot of hair. On top of that my hair was breaking something fierce too. I had to rewash it this morning. I just finish DCing with a protein Con and Im waiting for my hair to cool down before I wash it out. Thanks allandra

I learned this the hard way too, OP. I had knots way up near the root of my hair, never mind the ends! I got a good tip from naturallycurly to detangle on dry hair using an oil or some type of butter first. I've also went back to washing in sections (and detangling, deep conditioning and now, banding).....totally saved my hair!

I have done this before and my hair was so tangled, that I had to chop all of my hair off into a Haller Berry cut- I lost so much hair.

Yep...I learned the hard way a year ago! Now, I prepoo with mayonnaise (and a plastic bag) and any tangles fall away prior to washing

Nope, I havent relaxed in almost 6 monthserplexed. Im not ready to go natural now, but I will in the future. If this is going to happen I dont think i'll ever go natural

it has happened to me also, it was an hour detangling session with 5in of hair.

Ya, I started combing out my hair before and putting it in 4 or 6 braids. Then I DC on dry hair then wash, It's a little bit easier, I also like doing it to get out some of the shed hair before getting in the shower. It makes my shower cleanup easier. I shed like a cat.
But I just get so lazy sometimes I just want to jump in the shower without detangling, but I stop myself.

i dont detangle before washing if i did i would be bald! i have to wait until its wet and i detangle in the shower with conditioner or i detangle while wet with mane detangler.

I detangle, but I do not use a comb on my dry hair. I normally spray my hair with mane and tail detangler and then finger comb thoroughly, apply castor oil, bun and scarf the night before I wash. In the morning my hair is ready to be washed with minimal to zero knots or tangles, even on 12 + weeks of ng!

Sorry about your mishap OP. When I hit SL I'll definitely detangle before and washing in sections, especially if I'm stretching.

It only took me ONCE to learn this lesson. When I started doing my own hair, I rinsed my hair without detangling my hair from a twistout. The knots and tangles were insane. I have NEVER done that again.

I don't detangle until after I wash my hair. I can't detangle my hair before because of the product build up and I would lose to much hair trying to comb it dry. I am just gentle with my hair when I wash it and then I detangle.

- slab conditioner on dry hair first then detangle? or...
- over load on oil then detangle? or...
- slab on oil and conditoner then detangle? or...
- go ahead and clarify then DC then detangle?...

I can only detangle after washing when my hair is full of conditioner.

I have never detangled my hair before either and didn't even know that you were supposed to do this. I can only detangle my hair when its wet and has conditioner in it. My hair dry doesn't like combs.
