Naturals who retain length well;how often is your hair in a stretched state?

My hair is always in its stretched state-- just like my pic...either blow dried or a full flat iron press!

How do you wear your hair mostly?
Curly most of the time. Pulled back in a loose ponytail. But I also listen to my hair. If it's been in its' natural state too long, I'll flat iron it. Never know when that will happen. Usually every 8 weeks or so.

What can your length retention be attributed to?
My hair has grown a lot since the old pic below. My retention is due to lack of heat styling. My hair breaks/snaps easily when I blow dry. So, I try to avoid it. Also, LOTS of conditioning and I try not to touch it a lot.

You guys have solidified it for me:yep:
I'm not even going to risk the nonsense that i was thinking about doing:look:
I'm just gonna braid it up for now.I have been doing flat twists going straight back(my head looks like an alien's:sad:)and wearing my cute berets over a lightly tied scarf so my edges don't get rubbed away.My make-up skills are improving steadily due to this factor.LOL!!
I get pretty antsy when i don't see my hair for a while,so that is going to be my biggest problem, but now i know that letting it just coil up in itself is a terrible idea and i will be crying in a corner somewhere in two months time, if i keep this up.
Almost all of the responses are in sync, and most naturals are keeping their hair stretched in one way or another,and/or moisturizing regularly,in order to help w/length retention.
I'm going to explore the different methods of stretching whe my hair gets longer, but for now braids are best for me:yep:.

After I first cut my first set of locs, me hair was about a half inch. I kept it braided up for two years and grew to SL in that time. Braids really work.

After watching Charz's "what I learned" vid plus reading some of the replies in this thread I think I'll be incorporating more "stretched" styles in 2011 now that my hair is getting longer. I tried a roller set for the first time today...:nono:...let's just say I'm glad I'm hiding my hair this winter:ohwell:

I almost never stretch my hair and retain pretty much all my length. But, as my hair gets longer, I realize this might have to change.

Sorry for quoting every single post, but i don't want to mess up this natural hair:nono:
I have tons of questions about this:look:

I'm gonna be like you guys' annoying little sister right now:lachen:.I want to know EVERYTHING!!!!

So for the braid/twist wearers, how long are you guys keeping them up before taking a break? Are you taking a break?
What exactly are you moisturizing with?I used to have this down when i was relaxed, but my natural hair ain't going for that lightweight stuff anymore:nono:

Oh,and i love all of you guys' hair!!!
i am not just saying that!I am sure i've gushed over each and every one of the heads of hair in here at one time or another!I have no shame:look:
Thanks for helping guys!!!:yep:

I don't have problems with regular manipulation of my natural hair. So typically, I wear my hair out during the day. Then add my growth oils, protein, etc at night to damp hair then twist. So far during the colder weather, if I can get away with wearing a hat, I put a silk scarf over my twists then put a hat on. If I can't get away with a hat, I style my hair and twist at night before bed. So some weeks I keep my twists in for days, and other weeks its out every other day.

The BIG key is to pay attention to your hair. For example, regular manipulation works for me because I don't use heat on my hair. If you use heat regularly, maybe you want to consider keeping the manipulation as low as possible and MOISTURIZE it to death either way. But listen to your hair and watch how it responds.

My hair is in PS most of the time..Spring i Have it out more/Summer more wash-go pin up/half down..

Fall/Winter up/may-be a pony-tail now & then/Mostly braids/Plenty of MOISTURE...

Happy Hair Growing!

How do you wear your hair mostly? My hair is stretched with twist and braid out 95% of the time, especially when its cold out

What can your length retention be attributed to?

By staying consistent with my regimen, DC weekly, keeping my ends moisturized and sealed...finger combing/detangling...

My hair is flat ironed 11 out of 12 months of the year, with the other month with it being braided in cornrows so I can swim. I started retaining length like crazy when I started deep conditioning for at least an hour on every wash day and moisturizing everyday.

How do you wear your hair mostly?
I mostly wear my hair in 2 strand twist and then wear the twist out after. It keeps my hair from getting tangled. I use a thick creamy conditioner as a leave in and seal with my mixture of oils.
What can your length retention be attributed to?
I was able to gain pretty much all of my growth since my bc in 06/09 I think this was due pretty much to leaving my hair alone and keeping my hair mioisturized and tangle free. Also when I twist I usually leave my twist in for at least a week or two and then wash detangle and twist again. When my hair is straight I usually keep it in a bun.

Don't know if this helps. But Good luck on your journey.

How do you wear your hair mostly? In the warmer months Wash n gos..in colder months braid outs...
What can your length retention be attributed to?
Low manipulation...I WNG and add gel once a week then rinse thru out the week..When I do braids out..I think I manipulate more cause I rebraid nightly...I really want to stop rebraiding @ night and just fluff in the morning..I think I will test that out this week..

Yeah after starting this thread,I had to dismiss certain hair plans that would have screwed me! My hair pretty much stays stretched,as often as possible. I did braids for a while, and then ventured over to weaves. I cannot even let my hair dry after a wash withoutthe hair being extended in some way,or my ends feel like hell. Knots galore! Ugh! Thanks to everyone that helped out! Sooo appreciated!!
