Coconut Oil: I just don't get it...

I think you're right Black Master Piece. My hair hasn't solidified and I'm between NY and Philly. I use Whole Foods brand Organic Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil. As soon as I rub this in my hands in melts, instantaneously in my hair.

I use coconut oil, and dh also has a small container with coconut oil in it. It can be used on hair, face, body, and taken internally. OP if you buy it, you'll 'get it'. Its not just for hair.

I bought a jar of EVCO from vitamin world about a month ago. I've used it several times including last night.

I'm 7 and a half months into my transition.

Maybe I'm just not giving it enough time.
But I'm really please to have so many responses. Keep 'em coming!!!! :D
Thank you so much!

I have coconut oil in my hair right now. I use the Parachute brand. I love the smell of this oil. I also like how soft my hair feels when I use coconut oil. I tend to put more on my ends, especially since its a lot colder now.

You know what? I think maybe that whole "watch out because it'll solidify in your hair when it gets cold" thing is when you buy refined coconut oil....just my theory.

Because with the GNC brand of extra virgin organic I got it literally absorbs into the hair like a liquid would, its the winter now in NYC and I used a pretty good amount and nothing had solidified or anything my hair is still bouncy light and conditioned feeling......its fully absorbed:lick:

I think the GNC brand is called Emerald Labs?

Either way, its good stuff.

all coconut oil, whether refined or unrefined, solidifies below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. it'll heat up when you put your fingers / hands on it, & liquify. maybe you didn't put on enough oil for you to feel the solidification.

Yea I know it has a low solidification point, but trust, I put ALOT like almost a teaspoons worth in my hair and nothing has solidified anywhere, my curls are still hanging in there, hair feels great and I'm out in the cold daily. So yea, I think it was just fully absorbed into my hair and there just isnt any coconut oil present to solidify once it been absorbed, which doesnt take long:yep:

For me, the GNC brand sinks into my strands much the same way a liquid would. I think it has to do with the kind you have.....just my theory, take it or leave it:look:

Coconut oil was one of the first things that I bought after I joined lhcf. After a few uses I was not impressed. I was trying to use it as a moisturizer and I thought it was too light, but my hair was really dry. I started using on my skin and its great. About two months ago there was a thread about dcing with coconut oil and its benenfits. I decided to give it shot, and my hair has thanked me since. I dc with co every two weeks.

Ok. I've been using regular. So far I like it but next time I'll do the virgin.

Where do you guys get it?
I don't have a set site

I go back and forth alot , but when puritan's pride has their buy 1 get 2or 3 sale I am on it. Its Extra Virgin and not Organic

The rest of the time I get any brand of Organic, I've tried a few , all good, ones off the top of my head, Barleans, and Jarrows, Garden of life. I'm sure any brand of Extra Virgin Organic is good tho

you can find it easily in a search I'm sure

How does everyone feel about the nutiva brand?

Good deal on it and 99 cent shipping on Amazon.com btw.

leavin' it LOL

All Coconut oil is the same provided its extra virgin or virgin (which would be unrefined) or even Extra Virgin Organic, they all sink into the hair and absorb

Its not the brand or the kind, its the amount used, if its already mostly absorbed and you only used a little then yeah, probability is it wont happen as much or to the same degree

but it will happen for those with ANY Coconut oil that is still in the hair at a certain temperature, no doubt

I find that I don't have to worry about the oil freezing in my hair either.

I apply way more than a teaspoon  but by morning, it's mostly absorbed.

I use Nutiva Brand (organic extra virgin unrefined). I LOVE IT! I get it at my local grocery store for 13.99. It feels really silky and I use it everyday. Can't say enough god things about it!

I love coconut oil because it makes my hair shinny and soft, especially during the cold months when hair gets stripped of moisture by the heating system and cold air. I use it as a sealant on DD's 2a hair and it works wonders. Her hair looks and feels moist even a few days after her wash. Another good thing about coconut oil and kids is that it keeps lice away. DD's school has had an outbreak of lice this year, so it is a concern, but I know the coconut oil keeps her protected!

Coconut oil provides unbelievable shine and some moisture to the hair.
It can also be mixed with many things such as shea butter, other oils, and even in some peoples henna mix. You can add it to your DC to kick it up a notch.

You can use it on wet or dry hair and it doesn't leave the hair feeling greasy or weighed down.

It can be a nuisance to people who are protein sensitive.
As always stated on here, everything isn't for everybody.

exactly. i'm protein sensitive and didn't realize this when i jumped on this particular bandwagon....so now all that coconut oil is in my walk-in and i only use it for my skin. but as far as my hair is concerned.... :nono:

You're not alone OP...I don't like coconut oil! I guess it's because I'm protein sensitive cause all it does is make my hair greasy and dry feeling.

No, its not for everybody.
Crazy thing is....my hair HATES it (and believe me I've tried numerous times since its all the rave) but my skin LOVES it.

So crazy. But hey, whatever works.:drunk:

yup! that's what happened to me too. :ohwell:

luckily my skin loves it as well so at least it wasn't a total waste of money. i use it in my homemade face scrub :lick:

As others have mentioned, coconut oil penetrates the hair and gives moisture without heavy build-up or greasiness. It makes hair SHINE

It has given me GREAT shine, silky feel and overall softness. But like some people who cant use coconut oil. I can't use castor oil. It does a number on my hair, but me and coco oil get along just fine...so far. This is the shiniest my hair has ever been.

i dont know what i would do without coconut oil im convinced my natural hair texture has changed since using it....last couple days its been snowing here and i went out today after i applied the coconut oil to my hair and my hair wasnt stiff or anything like that my hair drinks this stuff up also when i apply it really massage it into each section of hair as opposed to just slathering it on the hair and having it sit there looking like a mess lol
