Coconut Oil: I just don't get it...

I read this thread earlier and decided to use the coconut oil I bought today from the BSS. I just did a 2 strand twist using a little mousse and coconut oil and the ladies were correcta-mundo! My hair is uber-shiny...it looks rich and black. I'm not crazy about the smell but I am crazy about the shine!!

Don't feel bad
I don't use it either because the smell of coconut makes me sick
And one woman told me it was great for dandruff and her head was full of flakes :spinning:
There are other moisturizing options

I LOVE coconut oil. I didn't discover it until I became fully natural, and it really keeps my hair moisturized all day and I use it for my scalp when its itchy. I also like to mix it with shea butter when I do my weekly twists.

Coconut oil is a staple for me when I stretch relaxers. It cools and calms dry itchy scalp and softens the new growth. It is the only oil I can use on my scalp daily the week before my relaxer that does not cause build-up and conditions my scalp dermis layer. (FYI - not heavy enough to base scalp with day of relaxer)

I have fine hair and it never weighs my hair down even with nightly sealing. It works great as mix in with DC's.

I love coconut oil! It really does give ur hair shine and make it soft, and when i flat iron with it it my hair feels amazing! My fave product by far. and i can put it on daily and not have build up at the end of the week!

I LOVE this stuff!!!!!!

I tried it years ago and didn't like it. it turns out it was refined, scentless and basically just not the right form of coconut oil for my hair.

I gave CO another try in October, and ive been in LOVE ever since:yep: I use Nutiva brand and its awesome. I use it for prepoos, styling during the week, i add it to conditioner, i use on my ends in the winter, for added shine... basically whenever my hair needs an extra kick of something.

I love how weightless it is and how it just "agrees" with my hair in general. I'm soooo glad i gave it another try. It is an absolute staple and i will continue to use it forever.

I can relate to how you feel OP. Olive oil does absolutely NOTHING for my hair, but many women seem to love it.

I cannot live without my coconut oil. I love what it does for hair. I use it as well as a serum for shine.

Love it as an addition to my shea butter, jojoba, orange flower water, vanilla extract hair pomade. Helps with moisture retention and gives my twists a beautiful sheen. The rare times I brush with my Denman makes it easier for the brush to glide through. I love it for my skin when not wearing dark clothing..it is also excellent for removing 'chicken skin bumps' from the body.

I just got into it. I use it mixed with my leave in, it makes my hair so soft!! I also mix it with lotion.

I'm going to mix some with my shea butter too. :yep:

I use it alone for shine. I just scoop some out in my finger, rub my hands together and rub it on my hair.

I've only used the Vatika oil and the Spectrum Extra Virgin coconut oil, but it's refined and doesn't have the nice coconut smell everyone talks about. I can't wait to run out and try the extra virgin, unrefined oil with the delicious coconut smell. :lick:

I don't know if I'd call it miraculous, but I like it.

For me, I don't find it particularly moisturizing by itself, but paired with a moisturizer as a sealant, it's awesome! It's lightweight and gives a nice sheen.

I can't use it in the winter, but in the warmer fall it was pretty good. It's great for my nose, I swear. I have the greasiest pimpled nose and it dries up my nose and clears it up. Weirdest paradox ever.

I love coconut oil for my hair and scalp. For the hair, I can use a lot of it w/o it making my hair feel oily and it makes my hair feel amazing. Excellent sealer. I add a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil to the coconut oil to keep my scalp dry and itch free.

I just rediscovered CO(pulled some out of my stash) and was wondering why I ever stopped using.

I like it because it's lightweight, adds shine and (after several uses) makes for very soft hair. I love it on my skin and hair. It's just like water...I can't use enuff of it.
Exactly what it does fo rmy daughter's hair. Mine not so much. But after a week, taking down her braids her hair is usually dry and dull looking, not the case when I use coconut oil

As for my hair, EVOO is the best. I do add coconut oil to my roots before doing a DC though, well I did that once... Recently, lol.. I'll try it again to see if I like it

I recently started using coconut oil in my DCs and girl let me tell you....it's da truff! It takes your conditioner to another level. I'm 19 weeks post and my new growth is like butter after DCing. I put some on my braidout yesterday and my hair was blinging...I highly recommend it! If you don't like it on your hair you can always use it on your skin. Put it on right after you shower and your skin will be soft beautifully scented.

I've been using it on my skin and i must say I like it just a tab bit more than regular lotion.

smells good, makes my hair soft, yet strong and lawd the shine. Just have to mix it with something in cold weather or else it will solidify in your hair

I moisturized my pressed hair with coconut oil after using the maxiglide and its really cold in NY now and it hasn't solidified in my hair:look:.....probably because it got absorbed already.....

Ditto to all those that say its great on the skin. My mom made this amazing whipped shea butter recepe with coconut oil I take a chunk of it and mix it with my lotion every day and it leaves my skin SO well moisturized and soft.

I may try adding it to my DC's as well....

I use my coconut oil head to toe....its awesome:yep:

I didn't get it either, girl. I tried it when I first went natural and I feel like it didn't do a thing for me. It started smelling badly a few weeks ago, so I chucked it; maybe I just had a bad coconut or something.

I recently ordered some more, and while I'm not sure if it's unrefined, I finally understand the hype. My natural hair had SHINE. It's soft and moisturized. I'm starting to use it on my body, so I'm hoping it'll keep the ash at bay. But so far, I am a fan for life!

Seems I'll have to check out this GNC, brand, tho'...

You know what? I think maybe that whole "watch out because it'll solidify in your hair when it gets cold" thing is when you buy refined coconut oil....just my theory.

Because with the GNC brand of extra virgin organic I got it literally absorbs into the hair like a liquid would, its the winter now in NYC and I used a pretty good amount and nothing had solidified or anything my hair is still bouncy light and conditioned feeling......its fully absorbed:lick:

I think the GNC brand is called Emerald Labs?

Either way, its good stuff.
