Done Sunday at a hair salon (an all white one might I add- my stylist is black). The stylist USED to work from home but now works in an expensive salon.

The process:

At first, she thought it would take about 1.5 hours but it took 2.5 hours since my hair grew from the last time she saw me in 2008. The salon charges $45/hr and is not considering doing it from home.
I paid $115 (and cried inside) for this style when I used to pay $40 for the same style.

I didn't feel comfortable with all the 'Yt' people staring at my head and asking THEIR stylist what was MY stylist doing. I understand it, but I didn't like it. By the time we were done, I was pissed at the amount of money I was going to pay, uncomfortable with the stares and my scalp was on FIRE from the detangling with a small-tooth plastic comb (the exact kind that the other Yt stylists were using).

I have mixed emotions about this. I love the style but the pain was NOT worth it IMO. The YouTube video of the lil' girl who was getting her hair pulled during a combing session with her mom (which some called abuse on film) kept running through my head. Those Yt folks must have felt my pain because I really wanted to cry no joke. They weren't tight but the parting and detangling hurt. My scalp is not used to that as I'm very gentle with my hair. I feel like I suffered a setback. The amount of hair she must have ripped through is scary to think about.

Is it really important to detangle a section that you’re about to flat twist? I know that the tangles she did encounter, frustrated her. If you flat twist, what say you?

Should these salons have a different pricing model for folks like me who want braids? Let's face it, I can find a young high schooler that can do this for me for less than half the price. What do you think?

How I prepped:

Coconut oil pre-poo all 11 sections.
Detangle thoroughly with medium AND small tooth comb under running water. A great experience.
Wash with heavily diluted with water Kenra Clarifying 'poo.
DC with Garnier Fructis Deep Penetrating (or Fortifying?) DC
Rinse
Apply generous amount of Qhemet Amla Heavy Cream to each of the 11 sections.
My hair was not fully dry when she started, maybe 50%?

How will I moisturize my hair? How do I remove dandruff. I plan on keeping these in for at least 3 weeks. For this price I'm hoping for 4 weeks!!!!

I love it!!!! Ouch - a small tooth plastic comb on each section of your long natural hair! I know it'd hurt if that was done on my much shorter hair! I don't think it was neccessary because you already detangled while prepping your hair! A wide tooth comb would have been okay IMO.

Sorry it hurt so much but I  the result! I hope it lasts up to 4 weeks :yep:

I wish I could keep mine for 4 weeks, but my gray hair would make it look horrible after 3 weeks. It looks good and that seems like the going price.

I'm sorry too :(
At one point, she went to get a large tooth comb but used it a couple of times and went right back to the small tooth comb!
I hope I don't have too much unnecessary breakage :wallbash:

Very cute, but I think it was severely overpriced...

...I would keep it moisturized just like braids: with a spray bottle. I wouldn't wash either to get maximum longevity -- just keep your scalp clean with Sea Breeze and cotton balls. And work on finding that high schooler!

SEVERELY OVERPRICED is right...

YES! I remember V.Merie recommending cleansing the scalp with sea Breeze....and I'm on it Sparkle!

Laurend- Maybe using a smaller tooth for the parts but then switch to a large tooth comb to detangle if you must IMO. I wondered if one needs to detangle consistently because while doing the twists/braids the loose hair gets tangle up and that may be a reason to keep untangling?...but i'm not sure if THAT'S necessary either.

The style is BANGIN', and honestly I don't think you could've gotten it done professionally for much less--you do have a GANG of beautiful hair. Seems like you prepped it as best you could, so I don't think she should've had to use the fine-tooth comb; you can just use the tail end of a rattail comb for parts. Seems your hair was damp and moisturized enough to not have to worry about excessive amounts of damage. Beautiful hair!!!

Wow really pretty! But the pain factor combined with that price..I would be . I would use Aloe gel (100% pure) to soothe your scalp and witch-hazel to cleanse it, if you have buildup. And a light oil of your preference to moisturize...like jajoba. Maybe you can lightly mist them with water to rehydrate every few days..or a light watery leave-in like Carols Daughter Black Vanilla....pricey but the smell is :lick:

Oh my gosh, that's beautiful! She did a remarkable job. While I do think it's a little overpriced, I'm not sure I could've gotten it done too much cheaper where I live (NC) for THAT SIZE.
I prefer to detangle as I braid or twist, but it sounds like she was not gentle nor patient enough for hair of your length. I hope she didn't cause too much damage, but it sounds like there was some from using that comb in that manner, ouch.

Thank you for your honesty L.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go cry now...

The style is beautiful!!! I love your hair!!!

I think she should have just charged you for the style ($75-$85) esp since you had already washed it and prepped it for the style. I don't know if a black person can go to a place like that and get their hair done since it still takes a little more time than a wp since we like to poo, DC, and style. I guess it also allows them to charge and hour for wp but get more people done and make more $.

I say find that college/high school student!!!

Well beauty is pain.It is very pretty. I wonder if someone with relax hair who has 5 months of new growths can get the same style done? would it come out as pretty as yours/would it last? Just curious, I might want to end my 6 months stretch that way.

It's a beautiful style.

Depending on where you live though - expensive or no you might be hard pressed to find a pro that would do it for much less. I know where I live there aren't a lot of salons, black or white, and sometimes the "white" salon is cheaper! For that price I might have gone with braids/rows rather than flat twists b/c they tend to last a bit longer....honestly, with hair your length it's going to be tough to find someone willing to do it cheaply - good luck finding a younger braider.

I think witch hazel would be a good idea. Your scalp is unlikely to get as much build-up as it normally does b/c it's exposed. Find a nice braid spray that you like or mix one yourself to keep the hair and scalp moisturized. I like African Pride Braid Spray. :yep:

I've only gone to a salon a a few times here to have it braided, and then twice to someone's house for a sew-in. I found there was a lot less grief involved if I DC'd, Washed, detangled, AND blowdried at home. Then I would just put it in a bun before my appointment - that way even if they don't know how to comb there's really no tangles for them to get caught up in and rip out. I'm sorry for your bad experience OP.

I agree V...this is not the place to go for a style like this.
In fact the price you quoted is precisely the price at the natural hair salons near me, which at first I avoided because in comparison to her home price, was too expensive.

I think blowdrying is key....I learned.
When I take the braids out, I'll see how many strands come out.
But one think I find solace in, is the fact that I've had a similar experience with her last time and well, my hair survived so many I'll be alright. My hair is getting MAJOR pampering when it's freed...

very pretty, I agree with the witch hazel for the scalp and also wrapping it up and applying minimal product will help the style last longer.
