Black women don't do well with wearing their hair up

:V I find this hilarious because the entire point of my HHJ is so I can wake up in the morning, slap this ish into a bun/ponytail without needing 39084398 bobby pins, and leave while still looking good. (shrinkage or no). Ironically enough, if I were relaxed, I would have been at this stage and then some at this point, lol.

My hair looks ridiculous out anyway. It's all floppy where i want it to have body and stands straight out where i want it to flop.

Me too...I love my buns and updos, because my hair looks ridiculous out. It's too short, it never lays right, and my ends are all kinds of uneven. People are always telling me that it's lazy to wear buns and I should really take better care of my hair (oh, the irony) and :blah:, but I really don't care.

Well the bun in your avatar is really beautiful. When I had weird layers I couldn't wear a bun and I felt funny about leaving it down :ohwell: I was in that hair purgatory for a while LOL

Aw, thanks!!
But I can't lie to you...that is not my hair. That's a bun donut with a veryyy thin layer of my hair on top of it.

:lachen:@ hair purgatory. It looks like you're out of it now...your hair is gorgeous!! :yep:

i wear my hair up 90% of the time. it's just easier in my wash n go routine i've been doing since the 90's. i don't think black women don't do well with wearing their hair up. i just think it's like your wardrobe, all about preference.

From my journey to SL to BSL I didn't PS at all, never ever wore it up but it wasn't because of the look it was because I was afraid to let a scrunchie, pin, clip or anything at all touch my hair. It grew in nice and thick just either wrapping or pin curling with good day pins at night. I also used a flat iron once a week after weekly washes DC's and rollersets.

The longer it gets the more I love wearing it up. I'm pretty meticulous about achieving a look when wearing it up so I get compliments whether I wear it up or down.

My hair grew the longest when I just left it alone and in a ponytail or bun. Now I do it out of sheer laziness, but the byproduct is that I'm getting a lot of length, and well, isn't that the point? ;)

It is a tradition thing in many places, true. Long hair can be a pain...it gets all over the place, it's hot on the neck, and can cause unwanted reactions. Keeping it up (esp w/ your length) makes plenty of sense.

The short hair issue is a big thing here cuz nobody has said what a protective style would look like for someone w/ very short hair. If someone w/ very short hair decided to do PS, how would they start? :look:

I think someone with short hair could start out protective styling with phony ponies if possible and the best cornrow or braid extenstions. Also Wigs. until their hair is long enough. Now doing PS without weave on short hair. I am not sure.

I NEVER wear my hair down. I have a round face and i dont think it looks as nice on me as a bun. I am a BUN girl 24/7. even in braids.

I wear my hair up 90% of the time I keep my hair twisted or in braids esp in the winter.

I don't like hair in my face or on my face...I let my hair down at home, when I'm trying to be extra cute or when doing African dance...

I have a long neck and updos are perfect for ballet...

I love wearing my hair up. Coincidentally enough, wearing the hair up and off the body is protective styling. Also, I'm long term stretching/transitioning and up-dos work the best for me right now. They're kind of a signature style. When my hair is worn down, which is extremely rare, it feels weird to me.

I think a major key of retaining length and maintaining health is preserving the ends of the hair, and with them tucked in and put away, potential damage is marginal by comparison. I've noticed better moisture retention when my hair is up too. So maybe I do this subconsciously knowing that, in addition to just really enjoying the creativity that ensues from my up-dos.

I go back and forth between protective styles and letting my hair down. If I can't enjoy it, what's the purpose? On the other hand, I love leaving my hair up in a ponytail or bun for weeks at a time and when I'm ready to straighten it I'm always pleasantly surprised.

This will be me once I'm closer to my hair goals, I am not trying to grow all this hair for it to stay in a PS for the rest of my life, I WILL enjoy my hair, but for right now getting to my goals is the most important thing. It will take a very special occasion for me to risk damage. Also I have lotsa thick hair which I don't like in my face, but I will experiment more at longer lengths, if I can be bothered!

ETA: I look much better 'up' in my opinion anyway as in a high pony versus a low one, canerows up like in my avi versus being styled downwards, so whether in a bun or not, I like the way I look with my hair up better unless I have my hair pressed which is not an option right now as heat straightening tends to equal subsequent damage for me...

Its pretty rare that I wear my hair up.....I wear my hair down most of the time and make sure my ends are moisturized sometimes I do it twice a day....I wear my hair down probably 98% of the time:yep: Not a fan of updo's longterm.....and I'd say I've retained length pretty nicely.

I would say you are a beautiful exception to the general experience of most Naturals, I wish I could retain length without PSing, but a combination of factors - my texture and hair's expertise in tangling, my lack of patience, the climate here - mean that won't be my testimony :lachen:

My current job my co-worker gets her hair done every week (no kids might I add) and she never wears her hair up either and if it is up she'll say I need to get my hair done.

The bolded just threw me for a loop. :perplexed

I loved ponytails, mostly because it looked like my hair was longer for some reason, lol. I will admit I did associate buns with laziness or bad hair days, but not consciously. It was more whenever I was having a "bad hair day," up in a bun it went until I "fixed" it.

Oh yes...good ideas, except for Muslims! :lachen: I guess that's why so many here use false hair to "hide" it. We just use scarves!

I love me some fabric! I think scraves are also beautiful!

Oh Netta, we all know you got rock star hair, so now you gotta rub it in that you have a "Swan Lake" neck too? I'm pouting! Jellis!:look:

;)

Well, my neck didn't become an asset until I started dancing...
